I thought we dominated the entire 1st period tbh, Bobrovsky was phenomenal we could have had 2 goals in the 1st

2nd period sucked, Florida had the momentum from the PP to start the period but I didn't think it was overwhelmingly in their favor

I think if Marner plays like the 3rd period last night during the playoffs even 30% of the game when needed, nobody at all will complain and if the other player pitch in, we'll win.

He put up great numbers against Tampa and helped them win the series, and yet all people do is point out that he had 3 points in a meaningless game...

So, I call BS on this claim.

But that's not what their contracts represent. Only Matthews had a 50 or 60 goal season, and only Matthews would be classified as a "goal scorer" by that 40% cut off. Mackinnon had a career high of 41; his only season over 40, and a 37% goal percentage. McDavid had a career high of 30, and a 31% goal percentage that is almost identical to Marner, and he got the highest cap hit percentage of them all.

And while your sample of 3 being centers could be considered evidence that a lot of top players are centers (and they are), that is not the same as evidence that their position inflated their contracts beyond their relative quality and impact level. These are 3 of the best players in the world, so them getting 3 of the biggest contracts isn't unusual, and doesn't suggest an additional cause or specific qualifier. Players of all types get big contracts. Centers, wingers, goalscorers, playmakers, and everything in between.

28/50 of the top paid players as a percent of cap are centres. There are WAY more wingers in the NHL vs. Centres, yet centres make up over 50% of the top 50 paid players. I still think centres are objectively considered more valuable by the league vs. wingers based on that kind of data.

I find the leafs do not make efficient changes, they coast to the bench, they extend shifts way too long and get caught out there. That’s the one thing I’d like to see change about the top 2 lines. Shorten your shifts and have more energy.

Be honest. If talking points are facts they are worth mentioning. We want him to be the best version of him there is. Not just when he feels brave or like it. Ok he can do what he did in the third period, top players do that allt he time to get 12m contracts. Keep doing it and everyone is happy.

Is Marner a better player when it is really all on the line?

Assuming you think he should be paid more because of that tiny sample size...

40% is what you mentioned. Which actually happens to be the average of that list. A lot of the top paid players are centers because a lot of the top players are centers, not because centers inherently get higher compensation relative to performance because of their position. There are more wingers than centers in the entire NHL, but centers are greatly overrepresented in the upper end of forwards, which is what you're isolating. Your position distribution, for example, matches the kind of distribution we see in the top 50 P/GP over the past 5/10/20 years, where there are also more centers than wingers.

I didn't add anyone who I knew was primarily a winger, although I may be off a bit, not sure. Anyone that was listed as dual position I left as a winger.

I was just guessing at 40%, it was an arbitrary number which is why I was asking about what the true % of points as goals = goal scorer. So most of the highly paid forwards in the NHL are centres, because they have the greatest impact on the game. Which is what I originally stated. Centres have a greater impact on the game, and therefore are typically paid more than wingers. If wingers were equally important, they should be equally represented as a percentage of population.

If we can sign bennet and Mitch and JT to contracts in the off season, this team would be crazy good... Bennet has never scored over 50 points in a season but he is a line up changer in the sense he brings a certain tone/ work effort/ intensity that we lack... would love to see him on the 2nd line. Maybe Marchand on the 3rd line being that super rat, who plays 3rd line minutes and 2nd unit PP. Only so much money to go around.

No chance we can sign them all, we also have to sign Knies. He probably gets 6.5-7

Also don't see Bennett leaving Florida. Back to back finals and won a cup there and he's a huge part of their core + tax free state, just don't see him leaving.
