Mitch Marner, Yet Again

McDavid on Marner is this: “Obviously two amazing players," McDavid said. “Reinhart scores lots of goals. He has a great shot and is so smart. Mitch, obviously a playmaker, kind of plays up high in the zone, so definitely a good mix.
They all are it’s team Canada what does that have to do with Mitch being perimeter great players find a way to make it work and they did Matthew’s shoulda have never committed to marner on the game winning goal but he did and we won but marner is perimeter as hell and he plays like a ballerina on the ice avoids contact with the best of them hopefully it doesn’t matter when the playoffs hit and we win the damn cup that should be the only concern tuning up and getting ready for the playoffs rest who needs to be rested audition who needs to be auditioned cause injuries will happen we will need everyone in a leafs uniform if we want to get where we are wanna go

No idea which goal you guys are referring to here.

But you can always just post the clip of the goal.

worth a 1,000 words right?

Don't need a he-said she-said scenario when the evidence is available.
Video feed is ancient, it's all about the freeze frames now (with red arrows).

That was Mattys fault though.

Yes... what are you impressed about with his comments regarding Marner?

"obviously a playmaker" or "kind of plays up high in the zone"?

Earlier in the season and his hits are like a fly bothering you he just needs to be more stankovan that guys smaller and plays bigger if he plays down low more it’ll spread players on the ice and maybe we’ll score when they play instead of getting stymied
Well as you said hopefully it doesn't matter... and we win the damn Cup!

1st. goal was on the team not Woll.

2nd. goals was SHG.
Maybe he could save this, but if a Leafs player was scoring we say good shot.

3rd. goals was an uncontested 2-1

4th. goal was all Woll, shot it off the leg of the attacking player into his own net.
self explanatory

5th. goal was PP cross crease. You'd think this should be stopped. Wasn't Draisaitl shooting.

It wouldn't be a stretch to suggest Leafs have d-zone issues, but

Shoot-out he was schooled.

Not sure what that post has to do with my post about Willy and Mitch.

Also, I was not discussing Mitch in particular or his leaving - I was just pointing out that a lot of posters here seem to think they have to like only one, and therefore not the other.
My feeling is most agree having two, 11 million dollar (or more) right wingers is a bad plan so fans have to pick one or the other. Even though William is locked in now, so I don’t get the negative stuff about him. Some fans may want to spread the cash throughout the lineup so we downplay Mitch. Well that’s how I feel.

I’m not a fan of having two ultra-soft players making $11M+ each while playing over 20 minutes a night.

It’s tough to build a culture of grit when, for 40 minutes a game, your “core” is built around soft players. At least Nylander doesnt complain constantly to the media and clearly puts in the work traininf during the offseason and his ability to absorb contact and keep skating is evidence of it.

My issue with Marner goes beyond his on-ice play—it's his attitude. He comes off as the opposite of a leader. Always making excuses after losses—"The Cup is the hardest trophy to win for a reason," or "I thought we played good, I really did." And he looks like he’s never seen the inside of a gym. Last offseason was the first time we even heard of him training with other NHLers. Undoubtedly was told to do so by Tree and Berube.

He wants to be paid like a top guy but acts like he doesn't need to train like one? Meanwhile, players like MacKinnon, Crosby, and Kucherov are in the gym and on the ice right after the season ends. And they are much more skilled than he is. Just ask Cooper.

Mackinnon, Kucherov, Crosby.. these guys care about winning. Thats why they put in the work. Marner doesnt, Hockey is just a paycheck.

Pursuit of perfection drives Kucherov's intense summer training:

one week after Tampa’s playoff exit, Kucherov was already skating with Adam Oates.

Nylanders never been a hitter but I can tell you they play two different games there’s more to contact than hits nylander takes the pucc to the net he doesn’t play at the blue line lol I don’t know the point of your rebuttal but it needs work

Although we know some stats are iffy, but let's play along

Maybe someone is trying to get back the puck they gave away.

This year:
Giveaways: 97 to 65

Last 5 years:

Giveways: 383 to 221

If you quit giving the puck away you don't have to hit to try and get it back.

:sarcasm:

Can the Marner money be better deployed in other areas is an important question because to me it’s about can this core group win a cup together and I don’t think they can. Too similar, too soft and don’t have it in them to battle as hard as their opponents will. They’re not going to suddenly change to become gritty superstars like Crosby, Toews or Kucherov and how can they find that player / leader with these guys running the show ?

As bad as the optics might be, if they flame out in the playoffs again, major roster changes must happen. Let Marner walk, sign Tavares as a 3C to $4M x 4 or let him walk, buyout or trade Domi, take the $22M in addition cap space and bring in players that know how to win when it counts like Bennett, Braydon Schenn, Marchand … Target Chychrun, Eckblad as UFA’s or Rasmus Andersson who is one year away.

If McDavid doesn’t re-sign over the summer in Edmonton, they need to plan to have cap space available for him if he gets to UFA in July 2026 or perhaps trade for him prior to that because Edmonton won’t want to see him walk away for nothing.

Moving off their core group and Thinking outside the box is something the Shanahan Leafs have never been prepared to do. Let’s hope he’s no longer around to prevent it from happening.
Domi is fine he would strongly consider dieing to win here. As Ties headbutting his way through the stands to the ice.

Full credit for his assists last night but his goal scoring is clearly trending down. I watched Kutch last night and he does not shy away from the dirty areas like Marner does. Until Marner starts going to the net and shooting closer to the net, he's not scoring many goals. For a guy who wants $13+m, he's dilutional.
You can't really compare the two. Kucherov is built like a mini Herc, not to mention he's the kind of guy that might try to hurt you and is how he makes his room. Marner just ain't that guy and even if he did put on another 15 lbs of muscle which I wouldn't mind seeing he's still not the kind of guy who's willing to do anyone dirty. Just imagine if Willie had that kind of mean streak. Same goes for the big boy it's just not in his nature.

Haha, I’ve got a story that’s pretty similar.

Back during the Montreal playoff series, I made a comment during Game 2 saying we weren’t going to have success if Marner kept playing soft and sticking to the perimeter like he was. I also mentioned that while I catch most games, I don’t watch every second of every single one (honestly, who does?).

Anyways, @Dekes For Days kept jumping on me, saying I didn’t know what I was talking about and—oh, by the way—reminding me that the Leafs were up 3-1 in the series at the time, as if that proved his point.

Well, we all know how that series ended—and we’ve all seen how Marner’s postseasons have gone since. Tons of criticism for his lack of grit and unwillingness to play a playoff-style game.

Yep… Dekes was out here back then bragging that he knew more than me because he watches every game.
Except that's not what happened. You came in after a game we won, in a series we were winning, and started saying a bunch of untrue, hateful things against Marner and his performance, despite him being one of the best players on the ice. In the process, you twisted something the commentator said, and let it slip that you barely watched any of the game.

I noted how odd it was to not only not watch a playoff game, but to then have such strong opinions about a game you didn't watch, and such negative opinions about the player that just had a great game. I pointed out that you had missed the commentators you had been referencing overwhelmingly praising Marner throughout the game.

You were the one who wouldn't leave me alone after that, and 4 years later, you're still tagging me to drag me into your misrepresentation of our discussion.

I do know more than you, and actually watching the games certainly helps that, but the biggest reason is that I actually understand what I'm watching, and I don't just spend my time searching for any obscure thing to use against Marner (after a playoff win, no less).

There you are... You were pretty confident back then, thinking you had pocket aces and I had 2-7 offsuit, when trolling me for my comments when the Leafs were up 3-1 ;). I was confident too.

Now 4 years later...Marner supporters are still telling me "just you wait till this postseason" and you dont watch every second of every game?

Yes, because its easy to spot a loser.
