Mitch Marner, Yet Again

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

The 2023 data being thrown around here is based on only 269 minutes of Matthews playing with Nylander. At the typical 13-14 minutes of 5v5 time for stars that equates to at most about 20 games. THAT IS A SMALL SAMPLE. Even the Marner data of 720 minutes is a bit lower than we would like.

But if you want to use that data then
Matthews with Marner GF=43 GA=28 GF%=60%
Matthews with Nylander GF=17 Ga=15 GF%=53%

Stop being tricked by small samples.
Is 2300 mins of data is too little?

In 2300 mins (2 years of data), Matthews was more productive without Marner on his line - while playing approximately 50% without him over those two seasons.

In those same minutes Marner was significantly more productive with Matthews vs Tavares.

The data shows, Matthews is the stat boosting star of this team and Marner is the main beneficiary.

In 2023 Matthews played 269 5v5 minutes with Nylander. Nothing can be concluded from that.

i think i want marner to leave so these threads stop lol ... it's like a car wreck .. i can't not look
They will find another pair of players to bicker about. Remember the Kaberle/McCabe debates? No idea why we have to get into arguments about which of our players is better...I prefer debating if our teams players are better than the players on another team.

Marner was more effective 2-7-9 points in the playoffs in 2017-18 as a teenager on his ELC playing against Boston playing alongside Bozak and JVR (before Tavares), then he was as a 27 year old 1-2-3 points playing alongside Matthews in 2023-24 against Boston again, this time without Selke Patrice Bergeron for Bruins,

Part of that reason was coach Babcock believed in a balanced TOP 9 and created mismatches for the opposition to handle.

Keefe believed putting all his eggs in one basket and pairing Marner with Matthews, draws the opposition best defenders & top Dman pairing and that keeps the top players in check.

Yep, not that I agree with it but when you put the two best players together it should free up Tavares and Nylander to feast on weaker competition.

(Last year they were all hurt which certainly affected things)

Take away his 2 goals and 6 assists vs a Tampa team led by a sieve in goal and his numbers look even less impressive. 9 goals and 33 assists in 51 games. That is a 67 point pace. And he wants $13+m to give us the privilege of watching him melt like the snow in spring for 8 more years if we are lucky to make the playoffs. What a comedian.

In the playoffs everyone’s top 6 and top 4 are very good if not great where do you expect weaker competition there that’s just stupid babs philosophy feasted on the 3rd d pairs which you usually can see a drop in their play as opposed to the top 4

What you didnt like the super skill move he tries to pull of between his legs? Lol the backhander wouldve been the more dangerous shot but of course he has to try and make a highlight reel play. This guy fails more at these plays than he succeeds but it doesnt stop him.

Anything else aside, the execution on those freeze frames was pretty solid.

He didn't have to get punched in the face for it.

Oh no. Last year a couple of guys got hurt on the drive for 70, hopefully he gets it before game 81 or is too far back that they don’t over extend.
I think he’ll be fine marner averages atleast a 1.3 over his career and that number should be higher in the regular season for sure im not worried everyone said he was invisible and he still got a point he won’t be invisible for the remaining games especially some of them against weak comp it’s in the bag maybe Willy can get 45 that’s more triccy then his 100

He's finished on that shot before. Where are your posts when Matthews, Nylander, MacKinnon and all the other elite players try it but don't score? Enough with the lame, biased posts already. It was a much better attempt than a backhand shot into the chest like the average player would've done.

That was the play where Rielly put it in the net only for it to be called back. Amazing skill unfortunately it didn't hit pay dirt. Missed a couple of frames but a video would have been a better showcase of skill.
