Mitch Marner, Yet Again

Marner will not go to Edmonton. I will eat my boot if he does. Low tax big money or stay right here.

I don’t think the taxes things matters that much to Canadian born players. I think guys like Matthews and Marner care more about front loaded loaded contracts in terms of bonuses and teams that can pay out a majority of their yearly salary in bonuses on July 1st. Edmonton is one of the teams that has an owner rich enough to do that. Toronto is another.

Exactly why I think If Edmonton can clear space Marner might end up there.

@Gary Nylander just easier for me to tag you in this reply. But I understand what you’re saying but if Marner stays in Canada I don’t think he’ll lose endorsements. If he gets to July 1, I do t think the leafs wait around for him and miss other UFA’s. Maybe he doesn’t believe he can win here. I think Edmonton might be the play on a short term deal imo. I’m not really drinking the highest bidder kool-aid
I'm no expert on the subject of endorsements so I could be wrong, but I would think moving to EDM would cost him a lot. But whatever, plenty of time to think about it later, right now my focus is on praying for a playoff miracle. :)

Quite a few of his companies are Canadian based companies like intact for example. So I think he’s be fine, probably would keep skip the dishes and Nike as well. I think some of those ads are already national endorsements, just like how we see some of McDavids ads on Sportsnet Ontario

Agreed, I hope we have a deep run and he is a contributor and we don’t have to think twice about signing him

You know Gary. When you move to Edmonton, sure there are no companies that want to pay you more than a used Chevy truck to hock their wares. That being said, you can buy a Mansion for 1/8th the price you would in Toronto. When you inevitably want to flee the city, you have to find someone to buy the house off you. That becomes problematic so you need to hope a new player wants to take it off you, or risk turning it into a rental for players that aren't as dumb as you for buying an Edmonton mansion in the first place.

Edm is a great place to live for 1 month out of 12

Again I think the hometown thing is a bigger deal to fans than it is to players. I’m sure they love being able to don the jersey but it’s not the end of the world if they leave. It’s a cool experience but it’s not the be all end all for these guys. Just getting to play the game you love is good enough for them, playing for the leafs is a cherry on top, but it’s not like Marner is going to go into a Great Depression if he doesn’t win here or ends up leaving.

It’s a novelty thing for fans more than the players TBH. If it was such a big thing why aren’t more GTA born players doing everything they can to come here? Most of them avoid it like the plague, or they come here on the back 9 of their careers, when they are looking to be closer to family, but rarely in their primes.
For most players sure but when you have the opportunity to be top 1/2 in scoring on a Original Six Team and having a statue out front that matters very much.
Money will be relatively the same no matter where he plays.

Like I said, I'm no expert on this subject but my gut tells me that doing to EDM would cost him a lot. If he stays and we win a couple of rounds just once, he'll be a legend in this town forever and that wouldn't be the case in EDM. And Toronto is the biggest city in Canada, I would think that's a big factor as well.

Exactly. You can't put a price on making your dreams come true, and becoming immortal in the hockey capital of the world, which happens to be your home town as well.

Gary.

As a small Canadian lad over the past 50 years you were more likely to fulfill your dream of becoming an astronaut than a cup winning Leaf.

So according to your version of events (I've heard several others) he let Marner know that he was willing to trade him for a better player making $12M. I.e., showed that he thinks Marner is worth less than $12M.

I would say that was a very smart move.
No. Rantanens comparable is Nylander. Rantanen is a minus player without Mack and Nylander is a minus player without Matthews. Marner is the real deal as he gets it done even without Matthews.

Dreams by their very nature don't have to be grounded in reality. Example - I'm dreaming of the Toronto Maple Leafs winning the Stanley Cup this year. ;)

Except in the playoffs. Unless you think 3 points in 7 games when the team needed him to step up more than ever is "the real deal".

Come on now, let's be serious.

I don't know why you want to keep embarrassing yourself.

Rantanen without Mack is a minus player in the regular season AND the playoffs (last 3 years).
Nylander without Matthews is a minus player in the regular season AND the playoffs (last 3 years).

Marner without Matthews is a POSITIVE player in the regular season AND the playoffs(last 3 years).

You know that you're supposed to watch the games, but you just don't actually watch them and that's really the most important part isn't it?

Marner nor Nylander have shown the level Rantanen has in the playoffs. That's a fact. Many fans of each respective player would agree with this too.

101 points in 81 playoff games does not come by shear fluke or bad goaltending or whatever nonsense you read from Dekes for Days' posts. It means the guy is a very formidable force in the playoffs with the results to back it up, far above what Nylander/Marner have shown at this point.

If you think 3 points in 7 games is "getting it done", you're the one that's embarrassing yourself.

I've watched every minute this team has played in the playoffs and the last two series has played, Marner has been unimpressive to put it mildly.

The point that I'm making is that Rantanen NEEDS Mack to perform (points) in the regular season AND the playoffs otherwize he's a negative player.
Now you could say that at least with Mack he performs (points) and that's fair but how are the Leafs going perform (points) when Matthews' shooting percentage goes from 16% in the regular season to 4% in critical playoff games? If you're going to blame Matthews' performance on Marner don't bother, I've been through that nonsense.

How do you even know that. You haven't even seen them in a playoffs away from each other. What you think a 10 game sample is all that it takes?

You jumped the shark on this one

We'll see how true this is come this year's playoffs.

And btw, Rantanen played a ton of time on the Avs second line during their cup run in the 2022 playoffs, a run which he finished with 25 points in 20 games.

Again as usual you ignore everything and blather on emotionally. That's why we don't have these talks anymore.
But there is one thing we haven't discussed. The 4 nations.

Imagine if Bennett's shot gets saved and we don't even go to OT or McDavid's shots gets saved and we lose on the next play. Marner ends the tournament with one or two points and the haters go crazy. You would have been the first to whine about points. Admit it. You won't. But because the goalie didn't stop two shots over two seconds, which has nothing to do with Marner, your opinion of Marner at least for that tournament was positive. Think about it. Marner plays the exact same but your opinion can be changed by two seconds of play by OTHER players. Two seconds. It's absurd. This is why anyone whining about points doesn't understand the game.

Adjusting for the incredible pace of the best against best and to a lesser extent the playoffs, Marner pretty well always plays like this (except the occasional game and the Florida series). The same incredible setups, the same incredible defence and the same amazing play away from the puck but for some reason Matthews' shooting percentages drops from 16% to 10% to 4% in critical games, just like it would have been in the 4 nations if it weren't for 2 seconds of play by other players.

You have two choices now. You can join the group of fools who blame Marner for Matthews' playoff failures or you can realize how dumb it is to use points as the ONLY measure of value. I suspect that you will just ignore all of this and hide in your shell.

Are you forgetting literally two games ago he was ass with Tavares Matthews scored with domi and they spent the game trying to find marner linemates to make him look good?😂😂atleast wait 10 games before trying to tricc us with that crap

How the hell can you even say that when he hasn’t been in the playoffs without him yet and when they were on the same team rantanen would be on the second line do you watch the games at all I’m starting to think you dont

In that series Rantanen was a minus player without Mack on his line. Points aren't so important when you get scored on more than you score.

I almost hope the Leafs keep Marner.

A lot of my daily entertainment is a result of him being on the team. I can't remember the last Leafs player who provided so much of their own ammo to be used against them. Marner's mouth is the gift that keeps on giving.

From lung to tongue.

That's what my grandma used to always say me. It never made sense to my infantile pea brain at the time. But now I understand fully what she was getting at.

Marner's bypassing the brain whenever he opens his mouth.

At one point I thought Marner was trolling the fans. There's no way anyone could be so out of touch with reality. Then I realized he's not smart enough to come up with an elaborate idea like that.

He's living in his own little bubble like Michael Jackson was.

Lol. When someone says "without PLAYERX". It means without that player on their line. Rantanen is only a good player when Mack IS ON HIS LINE otherwise he is a negative player. Man, you are hilarious.
