Mitch Marner, Yet Again

The last time, he was still developing, and he had had his earning potential neutered by Babcock's stupidity through his first two years. He was finally going to get a chance to play with Tavares, and get the opportunities that he had earned; that players like him usually get. There was a lot more reason to not want to sign early the last time. And that was widely reported at the time, not 8 months later when it's convenient for a media narrative.
Why do you say he got his potential earnings neutered?

And there you have it. It's the same with all of you guys. You watch the games slamming beers with your buddies and all of a sudden you circle jerk yourselves into thinking that you know more than the coaches who give him ice time and the GM's who pay him. The fact is that Berube, as all coaches, have a system and while it changes these players are playing it. If you want to think that the players (or is it just Marner) just play wherever they want without getting benched then you are delusional.

We've got Gary who doesn't even watch the games. The stats guy who just yesterday used a 43 minute sample size to "prove" that Marner sucks. The nuts who think that Matthews has no responsibility AT ALL for his poor playoff performance and you guys who thinks Marner just floats around hanging back instead of doing what the coaches want. The answers are right in front of you. Think man.
Alright nerd if Matthews as a generational center is glued to marner what reason is marner playing in a position that our actual center is already in ? Hes glued to the best center we’ve ever had so I’m not buying what your trying to sell at all

Because Babcock, in a pretty unprecedented way, refused to let Marner play with our better players; sticking him lower in the lineup (even on the 4th line at times) with lesser players, while splitting our PP units (on a low PP team no less) and limiting ice time. And that's not even counting the abusive behaviour Marner had to put up with from him. I don't think any player would be jumping to sign early given the circumstances.

Marner was a rookie playing with proven veterans in bozak and van dyk which was our top line the previous year not sure where your going with that one

Marner was a great player being put in unusual situations below what he had earned. Bozak and JVR played on our 3rd line.

In other news bennett who has ferris as an agent is in talks for an extension with the panthers……so I’m guessing it’s at the request of the player not the agent as to why he didn’t want to have any in season negotiating this keeps getting better and better hiding behind his agent which is his right but seems awfully cowardice of marner

Marner was a 170 pound rookie where did you want him to play matthews was with two rookies that played in the ahl so they were more seasoned and Komo and kadri were in a defensive role so brown went there another ahl rookie with seasoning they put marner in a place to succeed yet you see it as a negative ?

Marner was one of the best prospects and young players in cap era history. He should have been in the top six, getting a lot of PP time, and minutes with the team's other best players, like pretty much everybody else in the same situation throughout cap era history.

He was a rookie out of the ohl i think your over reacting man honestly he was on the pp1 with kadri bozak and jvr what else did you want ?

I still think they will sign him but it is disappointing that Marner didn't put this extension as a priority.
I get not wanting the distraction during the season but that's not enough of an excuse, IMO.

I tried but couldn't get a straight answer on why this was the strategy.

It doesn't matter that he was a rookie out of the OHL. Many elite prospects are. He destroyed the OHL, and he was excelling in the NHL. Most elite prospects do not get treated like that through their first two years, even aside from the abusive behaviour from Babcock. It's understandable that he wouldn't have wanted to sign early, and it's not really comparable to his situation now.

I just think Babcock was a shit coach with a terrible attitude. I get running a meritocracy, if that's what you are genuinely doing, but he was just a bully. I agree that early on Marner wasn't treated fairly, and I remember those nights he was on the 4th line. That may have impacted how him and his team have approached the Leafs since, who knows.

Him and nylander both spent time on the fourth line

He was basically on the first line I’m confused what more you wanted sounds weird

Actually, prior to last year Nylander made a lot less than Marner, and during last year's playoffs Nylander actually led all forwards in even strength ice time per game.

But I do agree that that poster goes overboard in his criticism of Marner.
Just a minor correction, prior to this season.
Last year's playoffs Nylander was making 64% of the money marner made.
These upcoming playoffs, assuming they're in, will be first at his current rate.

Berube may have a system but they are not executing well on it. When you watch Fla, you clearly see a system. When you watch the Sens you clearly see a system, heck when you watch Montreal you clearly see a system and structure. I dont see that with the Leafs, I see break down after break down after break down. Maybe they are playing Berube's system exactly as he intended, if so, his system sucks.

Bring on Coach Q. How I long for the coaching days of Pat Burns and Pat Quinn.

He was the best fit all along not sure why we’d take Berube Hes more of an la kings type coach

I dont think Coach Q had kissed the ring yet, he had to some sort of penance before Gary B said he was cleared of all his past sins. From what it sounds Coach Q is enjoying his retirement in Florida, maybe he is not an option.
