Mitch Marner, Yet Again

And there you have it. It's the same with all of you guys. You watch the games slamming beers with your buddies and all of a sudden you circle jerk yourselves into thinking that you know more than the coaches who give him ice time and the GM's who pay him. The fact is that Berube, as all coaches, have a system and while it changes these players are playing it. If you want to think that the players (or is it just Marner) just play wherever they want without getting benched then you are delusional.

We've got Gary who doesn't even watch the games. The stats guy who just yesterday used a 43 minute sample size to "prove" that Marner sucks. The nuts who think that Matthews has no responsibility AT ALL for his poor playoff performance and you guys who thinks Marner just floats around hanging back instead of doing what the coaches want. The answers are right in front of you. Think man.
Matthew’s marner bertuzzi looked horrible but nylander Tavares bertuzzi was our best line and matthews bertuzzi and domi looked amazing as well hmmmmmm

I’m sure if he played with knies and matthews for 80 games you’d see him a lot more of often then you do now with a guaranteed weak linemate on his line
That guy was playing mainly with Tavares and was a beast. In theory he should be more productive playing with speedier linemates. Given a choice between Willie and Mitch, I take the faster, stronger, skilled, 40+ goal scorer over a slower, smaller, more perimeter, cheaper, play making 25 goal winger.

It'll definitely be interesting seeing teams try to make room for him in the off-season if it comes to it.
In the unlikely event that he does leave it'll be interesting to see how those who want him gone at all costs will handle him leaving for free.
Have a feeling we will be overwhelmed with the tears.

There will likely be a range of emotions.

For some it will be dramatic, for others it will be just regular changing of the guard they've experienced over the decades.

Everyone has to keep in mind, they are all rentals of different duration.

It won't be like Keon being forced out of the league by some vindictive owner.

For those that really want him gone, the biggest haters, it won't be tears.

If anything, the "tears" would be for how Treliving let him walk for nothing when he could've moved him before his NTC kicked in.

At the very least, gotten a commitment that the negotiations would start last Summer instead of letting Marner's camp (allegedly) dictate that nothing would happen until this season is over.

They'll be nothing regular about it. Players of this stature rarely if ever hit the open market.

You can bet there will be tons of 'how could he walk and not let them trade him? ' posts.
It'll be overwhelming.

While it would have been nice, he's earned the right to decide for himself.

I've moved across the country leaving a company that wanted me to stay, and I can say I felt no regret.
Actually, I left that same company twice, laugh, and in both cases I moved thousands of kilometers away, and regretted neither.
Sometimes you just have to go, see and experience other options, rather than look back and say "I shoulda."

marner has to be marner, not someone's (friends/family/fans) conduit to glory.

lol, I’m kinda surprised you’ve been crashing out like this. The lines from Ottawa game didn’t work. That’s a coaching decision. Nylander scored on a good play, but his line was awful, so was Marner’s. Those combos just don’t work.
With the evolution of Nylander’s game, he’s not a great fit with Matthews. Both want the puck and both want to shoot. That’s why Domi and Marner are Matthews preferred guys. Matthews wants the puck, so he needs one guy to go get it and one guy to distribute it to him. Our offense is pretty much built around 34.
Mathews should be away from Marner who constantly looks for him. Mathews looks like Laine half the time. -“I’ll just park here wait for a one timer opportunity.” I think Mathews drove the net more as a rookie than he does now.

I do agree both William and Mathews should be separate lines. Paying Mitch the same as those 2 or more lol is a waste. Money is better used to upgrade the supporting cast.

So he wouldn’t accept a trade there but they think he would sign there. Ok, if he did sign there well that would be just pathetic. My guess it’s either the Pens or Islanders.
Why would it be pathetic?

Well if he refused a trade there, why would he sign there a couple of months later. Pathetic he couldn’t read the tea leaves and just move on. Carolina has just as small of a shot going deep in the playoffs as we do. Giving up the 8 year deal option as well, a pathetic decision.

Matthews signed for 4.

I think the 8 year thing has very little meaning to players hedging their bets.

He could probably get a bigger audience if he doesn't demand full term, as teams are only offering money, not assets going out in a trade.

He's a good teammate, that would be a selfish move.
Why would he want to leave his teammates in the middle of the season?

Not sure what 'tea leaves' you read but everything we know to date is the team wants him to stay and he wants to stay.
