Yup. It's nothing personal, it's just business. Brad can say "Well, we haven't won in the playoffs with the core 4(5) and we're going to use the opportunity we have with some expiring contracts to give the team a new look. We wish John and Mitch good luck in their future endeavors"."No one would go to Carolina" seems to be the narrative.
I'd guess Marner goes to market, realizes no one is going to overpay him like the Leafs did and then take a discount from another team and sell it as he wants to win (regardless of the strength of the team). I wouldn't rule Boston out with all their cap space.
It's not a bad scenerio to let Marner walk and get our cap structure back to normal. With Nylander signed long term and Tavares' hit coming down - the team will be a lot more balanced without Marner's cap hit.
If I'm the GM I'm looking at moving Reilly as well.
