I tend to agree with you here.

You might be able to win with 1 guy like that. As long as that guy can do it all, plays C, ext. Kind of like our current captain. We can have 1 of those guys, and everyone falls in line behind him. Almost healthier for cap orientation overall to have a clear cut "guy".

You know what man - we get to sit back and watch this unfold now. This is the last kick at the can with the "core 4" or whatever the elementary term is. Come up short, we are used to it. I know there's a huge segment of the fanbase that is excited to see the soft, entitled, "core 4" bullshit in the rear view mirror.
You would think after getting dummied in the playoffs 8 years in a row, these guys would learn something, grow a pair and put the team first.

I'm ok with Matthews and Willy, Matthews scored damn near 70 goals and would've easily fetched over 14M in the open market, he chose to stay. Willy chose to stay at a fair price as well.

This guy just makes it so hard for people to like him. Everytime he starts doing something good, playing well or whatever, he pulls some bullshit to piss everyone off again.

I don't think I've ever seen a single player this selfish in any sport in my life.

Show your evidence that the hockey world views Marner as more valuable there are many quotes of the opposite and new information that treliving asked Marner to waive to trade for rantanen. I don’t even like that move. But that would be “evidence”.
I did, and there's no evidence of the opposite. Actually, what you're pointing at is just further support. The reports were actually that Carolina wanted to trade Rantanen for Marner, and that Toronto also preferred to keep Marner but relayed Carolina's request in case Marner didn't feel like there was a path forward here.
2.) I do believe that GMs can use more than one stat. I don’t believe there is any evidence ever that GMs value primary assists the same as goals.
An 80 goal 20 assist player is worth more than a 20 pt 80 assist player
3.) I also believe that you are falsely comparing points (goals and assists) vs goals. We are comparing two players with virtually identical point paces.
4.) most importantly I believe that if the NHl was using primary points as a primary factor for million dollar decisions they would actually keep track of it on their website
5.) you have not at all proven that similar “primary point” contract histories line up.
This seems to be a cycle of answering you, only to have you not listen, and repeat the same demands for things that you've already been given and won't provide yourself. I'm choosing to believe what the historical data says about what GMs do, that keeps being proven true. You can choose to believe whatever you want.
Are you actually suggesting that a 80 goal 20 primary assists 50 secondary assist (80 goal 150pt player) Would make as much as a 20 goal 80 primary assist 20 secondary assist player?(20 goal 120 pts)?
No, that's not what I suggested at all.

Da Leafs will make same final offer to Mitch of 12M for 8 years after playoffs if he helps team advance a round or 2 .. my understanding is they have already offered da Willy deal to Mitch and Mitch's camp has gone into no response mode .. once that offer, if at all, is made after playoffs then Leafs will not engage after July 1st with Ferris .. so he can't leverage them with rest of league .. we will use da CAP space to improve our team depth and sign a few guys up front and a top D on backend .. i think both sides know da drill .. and my gut tells me Mitch will take it as there is ZERO chance he gets $96M for 7 years which is AAV of $13.7M .. not gonna happen it is a wet dream of Ferris and Mitch likely knows it

At Turtle Jacks, yes.

Millionaires don’t hang out there, just regular people like you and I and what I assume what he wanted to do.

But yeah, you hate him to the point you have to question what I saw.

You’re literally the problem, beyond the point of reason anymore and will fight against anything that goes against your hedged position.

Mitch is a great hockey player.
Not in the playoffs unfortunately.

I don’t blame Marner for refusing to waive his clause and I actually give Treliving a lot of respect for even approaching Marner with the situation.

When we get upset in the playoffs again and Marner has a subpar playoff run again, we’ll be talking how he stopped us from having Rantanen lol.

What did he do this time? Not waive because you wanted him to?

Yeah good point. Treliving can just say “well I tried guys” “but the little man and his daddy didn’t want to waive so that’s on dubes and Mitch”

I was convinced that Marner was going to stay and re-sign, but after hearing that Treliving made 2 attempts to get Rantanen I don't know anymore. It sounds to me like they're not close in negotiations. Paying JT, paying Marner, and paying Knies down the road means bold decisions have to be made.
Why wouldnt u want rantanen ?plus he wasnt asking for more money than hes worth
Looks to me the leafs are looking for a more balanced team and maybe paying a player like makar or luke hughs 14 million

Frankly I’m surprised Tre asked Marner too waive his NMC at the deadline but it shows that threy know he’s a goner at the end of the season. At least Tkachuk gave Tre the option of trading him the summer before his contract expired. Too bad Marner didn’t care enough about the organization and his teammates to do the same. That type of FU attitude comes from the father.

Imagine you are the Marner family. You are going to sign a potential 7 year deal worth $100 million. About to have a baby and start a family

You can do it in Tampa or Florida with lower taxes, better weather and far less stress from the media/fans.

Your parents and extended family will be down there often during the season to enjoy the weather and they start a life there and put down roots.

The worst will be when Nylander and Matthews see him win before they do. Matthews leaves in 4 more years and the rebuild starts.

Thanks to Brad and the raging fan base all prospects and draft picks are depleted or traded for one more shot. Look at our current prospect pool. It’s a joke.

ROR turned us down, again.

Wonder why?

The cheerleaders here told me it was Keefe.
The Leafs were not the only interested party. He turned everybody down, same as Schenn. And then there are the guys we don't know about who the clubs just said no to.. If the Isles had been able to resign Nelson the Leafs might have Pageau instead.

Tampa and Florida aren't touching Marner

Honestly a lot of people suspected he didn't like the mindset of the core.

That's the part some leafs fan want to hear but he's always said all the time than his decision never be because of his teammate

Mitch Marner Confirms Future With Leafs in Limbo; Addresses Being Asked to Waive NMC

Following a third straight loss, Maple Leafs forward

Hours before the Leafs were scheduled to take on the Colorado Avalanche, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman dropped a "Freidge Bomb", revealing that Marner was asked to waive his no-trade to go to Carolina for Mikko Rantanen.

The Leafs reportedly got involved in the Rantanen talks due to their frustrations with negotiations on an extension with Marner. To nobody's surprise, the pending free agent turned down their request.

While Marner and his agent Darren Ferris hold the Leafs' feet to the fire to squeeze every dollar they can out of the rising salary cap, many believe it is a tactic to get to July 1st and drive up his price even more with Rantanen off the market.

Or just mean he just don't want his head away of playing hockey and be 100% mentaly here to help the team and look for extension when season will be over

LOL, I was wondering if anyone else noticed that fantasy. I just let it go because some people like you say, live in this fantasy world and there's no collection of facts that can get through to them.

I predict there will soon be a bunch of cherry picked fancy stats heading your way. ;)
I think a lot of it too is Marner is very popular with the younger crowd. He’s like a big kid and I don’t mean that in a bad way. That being said there could be a lot of younger posters here that just follow Marner and have no clue about reality. Just a theory but it would make sense.

Everyone cheering that they tried to trade Marner has selective hearing, they said their number one choice was signing Marner long-term...

You all complain about players not wanting to be here, and now that one does, you complain that he won't leave.

Neither are going to sign Marner without moving heaven and earth in terms of cap.

I'd be surprised if he wants to leave this country and both sets of parents with a newborn approaching, yes you can fly them in but it's not the same as a 20-30 minute drive away.

I think the Leafs likely offered some reasonable deals, if 12-12.5M or even 13M but with some deferrals cannot get it done, whatever.

You set the table a bit for McDavid the following off-season.

"No one would go to Carolina" seems to be the narrative.

I'd guess Marner goes to market, realizes no one is going to overpay him like the Leafs did and then take a discount from another team and sell it as he wants to win (regardless of the strength of the team). I wouldn't rule Boston out with all their cap space.

It's not a bad scenerio to let Marner walk and get our cap structure back to normal. With Nylander signed long term and Tavares' hit coming down - the team will be a lot more balanced without Marner's cap hit.
Yup. It's nothing personal, it's just business. Brad can say "Well, we haven't won in the playoffs with the core 4(5) and we're going to use the opportunity we have with some expiring contracts to give the team a new look. We wish John and Mitch good luck in their future endeavors".

If I'm the GM I'm looking at moving Reilly as well.
