NMC need to be abolished, if players want protection then a max 10 team NTC to every player as a compromise, management need to be protected from themselves

I think i the next CBA there will be some language around NMC’s and NMC’s. I expect that because I think the players will push for a lower max term length. Something like the NBA, max term length can be 5 or 6 years.

Kyper said $13,8m one day after feeling the heat for saying Marner wanted Draisaitl money.
I think he knows. He has an in in the Org - connections to Tre somehow.

He's been bang on the money since Tre has been here.

Dri set the table for Marner in his own head. He thinks he deserves to be paid like a centre. This happened last time aswell, "Matthews is the only comparable".

I am ok with that!

For better or worse, short of a cup - its time.
You can't be paying your highest paid dman to play on the bottom pair. Seriously, at this point, we might be better off with him in the press box. I mean, we were better when he was suspended.

Of course the Rielly fan boys will tell you he is a playoff warrior but that was two years ago and this is not the same guy. This guy has lost a step or two.

He isn't even a bottom pairing guy right now. He is a liability.

Just keep making Mitch out to be what he and his agent is in the media.

I just don't think you can win with a guy who has this mentality. He's not team first, he cares way more about money and himself. He says he wants to be a Leaf but refuses to negotiate a deal and also refuses to be traded.

He wants to milk the team for as much cash as he can get. Elite talent no doubt, but I want guys that want to win a cup, not guys that want the biggest possible paycheque.

If he truly wants that 13M, it better be 13x8. If it's some bullshit like 13x3 let his ass walk, he's worth the money, issue is the mentality. I'm a true believer that you need competitive players that WANT to WIN as their primary goal.

You want the 13M Mitch ok cool, give us a long term commitment. We're trying to build a contender for years to come, not sign guys who keep signing for near max every couple years. Find someone else to be a sucker if that's what it is.
I tend to agree with you here.

You might be able to win with 1 guy like that. As long as that guy can do it all, plays C, ext. Kind of like our current captain. We can have 1 of those guys, and everyone falls in line behind him. Almost healthier for cap orientation overall to have a clear cut "guy".

You know what man - we get to sit back and watch this unfold now. This is the last kick at the can with the "core 4" or whatever the elementary term is. Come up short, we are used to it. I know there's a huge segment of the fanbase that is excited to see the soft, entitled, "core 4" bullshit in the rear view mirror.

Thought he was shilling for Marner but since then, I think he is bang on. Leafs offering $13m max and him asking $13.8m explains why Leafs are frustrated with negotiations and why a deal has not been done. The guy is dilutional. Wonder if he will be after he shits the bed again in round #1.

Its kinda the, "cant hate the player, hate the game" type deal.

Ferris is doing his job, it comes down to the person who employs a guy like that with his negotiation tactics. It is well documented.

Marner saw how last negotiation went and said, "ya, lets do that again." That is on Mitch.
I'd like to add to this point as well.

Marner firing Ferris would have been the biggest PR move he could have made after last negotiation. That would have been a gift to the fans and the team. That would show that he is in-fact bonded with the team and fanbase.

His priorities are money. Winning, being a leaf, being a legend in Toronto, these are all secondary.

Not only do the fans love him, his teammates must love him even more for trying to take more of the pie that he deserves. They must love to see him throw hissy fits on the bench and then be expected to run through a wall for the team while being paid 1/10 of his salary. Pretty much explains why this core has never and will never win.

No, there is/will be nothing for fans to comply with. Who feels slighted by your or anyone's commetary on performance?
Are you that naive ? You don’t think Kypreos’ narrative that Marner is looking beyond just money is coming from Marner’s camp & that he feels there is too much finger pointing at him for this organization’s failures. He’s basically telling everyone I want the money & I want zero criticism from fans & media otherwise I’m gone. He & his agent are from Toronto, they know the markets insecurities and are going to exploit it for their benefit just like last time. The fact this got out tells me clearly that the front office is frustrated with negotiations & things are not going well with Marner’s reps.

Marchand walked into a meeting offering to take less money to remain a Bruins. This f***er is no Marchand on or off the ice. They need to cut bait.

Honestly a lot of people suspected he didn't like the mindset of the core.

I am pretty sure there was an interview where he was pausing and thinking hard about how to not implicate the players. It was pretty telling at the time but I can't remember how it went down
I thought he looked in slow motion out there and wasnt all that great for us. I think we caught him on the down slope and hes only gotten worse since. Great player and leader in his day but did not want him back.

Who knows what he thought though. Anything outside of what he said is speculation......or maybe its aliens.....

Honestly a lot of people suspected he didn't like the mindset of the core.

ROR moved to be closer to his brother Cal. He just committed to Nashville. I understand why he didn’t want to come back.

Also the interview you’re talking about was with Nick Alberga. He said he loved the guys. Felt the team didn’t make adjustments (he was hinting at coaching) against Florida. Then his brother advised him to come to Nashville, said it would be great for the kids and the rest is history.

Still saying "all star team"? Its not a good look. Try a different talking point.

Legit as intense as any playoff series and the fastest hockey I've ever seen in my life. Hoping for a repeat at the Olympics.

Unless you want to fully blame Marner for special teams, Marner has been one of the best 5v5 players overall in the playoffs. He just has been. You may want it more backloaded but overall it remains the same. How would we replace him? Worried about 13.5 million over 11 million with the cap going up huge? Get rid of Domi's 3.75 million? Walk Tavares down to 5 million? The money stuff is petty considering how much we waste down the lineup. Where would you put the money? Theres gonna be a lineup around the corner to grab a two way all situations monster like him. Not a chance in hell we could ever replace what he brings IMO unless we can get really lucky.

...and you talk like he's somehow been a negative to the team in the playoffs. Can you name 5 players better than him even with expectations? The team has already taken a step back defensively this year, reverting to Babcock level D structure and losing Marner would be.....interesting to say the least. Do they even make the playoffs without him this season?
“Marner has been one of the best 5v5 players overall in the playoffs.”

What’s living in a fantasy world like?

Mitch Marner Confirms Future With Leafs in Limbo; Addresses Being Asked to Waive NMC

Following a third straight loss, Maple Leafs forward

Hours before the Leafs were scheduled to take on the Colorado Avalanche, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman dropped a "Freidge Bomb", revealing that Marner was asked to waive his no-trade to go to Carolina for Mikko Rantanen.

The Leafs reportedly got involved in the Rantanen talks due to their frustrations with negotiations on an extension with Marner. To nobody's surprise, the pending free agent turned down their request.

While Marner and his agent Darren Ferris hold the Leafs' feet to the fire to squeeze every dollar they can out of the rising salary cap, many believe it is a tactic to get to July 1st and drive up his price even more with Rantanen off the market.

Shanny hires a young, first time GM to lead the most critical period of the Leafs. Did he do so to ensure no threats to his position?

Dubas signs, by his own admission I'm sure at this point looking back; the most handcuffing, overpriced RFA contracts he could have signed. Overpaying three young budding stars and giving them full NMC. That said, the full NMC didnt kick in until late so Nylander or Marner could have been moved. I begged for at least one of them to be moved, Marner HAD to be moved before his kicked in.

Leafs didn't do so.

They have to let him walk, The team need to now build real depth. Due to overpaying at this deadline it may take a year or two, but they need to restock through UFAs, internal development and difficult trades.

THIS is the way forward. If Brad reads this forum. THIS is the way forward. You built the back end, now do the same with the forward group.

If Leafs go to the Finals, pay him, if not, walk away.

LOL, I was wondering if anyone else noticed that fantasy. I just let it go because some people like you say, live in this fantasy world and there's no collection of facts that can get through to them.

I predict there will soon be a bunch of cherry picked fancy stats heading your way. ;)

Rantanen's 5v5 numbers are actually pretty interesting the last 3 years.

5v5 on ice numbers:
Regular season since start of 2022 season (including post trade):

Rantanen with Mac:
Goals for: 159
Goals Against: 108

Rantanen without Mac:
Goals for: 50
Goals Against: 71

Mac without Rantanen:
Goals for: 95
Goals Against: 54

Playoffs last 3 years:

Rantanen with Mac:
Goals for: 22
Goals Against: 15

Rantanen without Mac:
Goals for: 10
Goals Against: 13

Mac without Rantanen:
Goals for: 23
Goals Against: 13

Gonna be fun to see how the rest of this unfolds.
