I really do think the signing situation is gonna end up better for everybody. Marner can take a 2-year deal that will lead him to the $110M+ cap at 29 years old (and this is very likely to change the entire landscape of how much money players are getting too, so there'll be lots to be had). So in 2 years time when we're eyeing the end of Matthews contract as well, we can really see we're at and what we wanna do.

All these years of good regular seasons followed by sub .500 hockey, no problem. Marner goes from a ~100 point player to a ~40 point player after 86 games, not only is that shrugged off but these guys get angry when it's even brought up.
Off the freaking charts weird does seem accurate, smh.
As long as there's a chance that McDavid will be available, make it a 1 year deal.

Reinhart is a really good accessory star player on the Florida Panthers and was largely a miss on Team Canada. I wouldn't say he's a standalone star player you can survive overpaying but more like a Hyman who can do some really nice things for you in a sidekick role provided he's behind a couple of guys like Barkov and Tkachuk who do a lot more for you. The goal Bennett scored in the gold medal game, that could have been Reinhart, kind of a dagger on the counter rush. But he didn't. He won't control a game for you.
That's a bit extreme. It seems backwards but it is for the most part factual across all sports. They get paid based on the regular season.
Maybe there should be more incentives and bonuses into contracts based on playoff success, both individual and team.
Johnny Gaudreau (RIP) is the quintessential prototypical example that playoff performance/style absolutely factors into contract negotiation, or at bare minimum there are indeed teams who very much factor it in.
Pretending that playoffs don't factor into contract negotiations at all is completely and utterly false.
If I don't watch it, it doesn't matter.
And for context again, his nothing assists were not the game winner in Game 1 or the setup of the game winner in the Final. Homeboy was irrelevant.

I never said Reinhart could control a game. Marner doesnt control a game either. Mcdavid, Mackinnon, Crosby can. If you listen to the coaching staff. They made changes to the lines after the first USA matchup, because they thought the team was "playing too perimeter"... one of the changes was to drop Marner into bottom 6 and bring Point into top 6 (which aligns with what the coaches said, a plauer who crashes the net for a plauer known for playing perimeter). Marner was brought back into the top 6 because the coach thought "he had legs".
Mackinnon, Mcdavid, Crosby never moved around because they are complete players that can play in any environment. If you watched, it was evident, they were explosive offensively, but also physically involved battling behind the net and always standing in next to the goalie after shots.
Marner, like Reinhart has strengths and weaknesses.

The thing is, Marner can control a game. The problem with him isn't necessarily top end ability to be a difference maker, it's the fact that he's gotten neutralized in big moments and his ability to step up has been called into question... but yeah, if you want to define him based on Mackinnon, McDavid, Crosby I don't think he's at their level.

He told teams he was signing in the east coast and he was only interested in teams that were drivable to New Jersey. So the NJ, CBJ, PHI, NYI and NYR. I don’t think he was gonna go to Buffalo. So he limited his pool of teams and he was fine with it. Him and Meredith just had their first child I believe? And he wanted to be as close to family as possible. He wanted to sign with the Flyers, the Flyers wanted him, but they couldn’t move a contract out to get him. Then a few players from CBJ called him and told him he’d love it there. It was never about money for him. It was always about location and family first. RIP to Johnny, let’s not spread false narratives.

Literally every player ever who's signed with another team via UFA has their own story of why they landed where they did. There is no conceivable way that Johnny Gaudreau and his camp compromised their leverage and cost themselves millions of dollars by just putting it out there where specifically they want to be. You don't get to be the authority on what is false narratives.

What reason does Gaudreau have to lie about that? There were rumours about Gaudreau wanting to be on the east coast a year prior to him even hitting UFA. I remember one time on CBC they asked him about it how hard it was that his family couldn’t come to games. He’s spoken pretty openly about this for a number of years. Post mortem we’ve also seen how close knit that family is.
He was open and honest about CBJ not being his prime destination. He wanted to go to Philly. They couldn’t move JVR or Ristolainen, so they didn’t have the cap to make a competitive offer.

Direct quotes from Gaudreau (RIP), the guy was going to the east coast. Again, I agree with you when it comes to most players. But with Gaudreau, it was pretty clear that the incident with his father’s health in 2018 was a huge driving force in his UFA decision. He turned down more money from Calgary and even acknowledged it in his quotes. He acknowledged he legitimately turned down a 8 year deal.
"...For what it’s worth, I didn’t know for sure what I wanted to do up until the last hours of the last day. Man, even after I turned down the eight-year deal from Calgary, I still thought about going back and trying to work on a seven-year deal to stay. It was all on the table for the entire process. And the year before that - got 99 points - along with dealing with a horrible line mate situation in Calgary, oh and also dealing with the fossil of Daryl Sutter destroying calgary's offensive sytem.
