You said Marner "created the goal"... Mcdavid said it's a box and 1 set system.He was giving credit where credit is due. We can definitely give some credit to Makar. Why not? Though this thread is about Marner in particular.
Marners contribution to that play literally was to skate from the faceoff to the corner, wait for the puck and the play to work as intented and have a wide open pass to Mcdavid in the slot.
He didn't even after to process it because the set play tells you where to look.
Additionally, Matthews and Fox were royally crossed as the set play is intended to do. It really couldn't have worked any more beautifully.
It certainly wasnt "created by Marner"...as you stated.
