He was giving credit where credit is due. We can definitely give some credit to Makar. Why not? Though this thread is about Marner in particular.
You said Marner "created the goal"... Mcdavid said it's a box and 1 set system.

Marners contribution to that play literally was to skate from the faceoff to the corner, wait for the puck and the play to work as intented and have a wide open pass to Mcdavid in the slot.

He didn't even after to process it because the set play tells you where to look.

Additionally, Matthews and Fox were royally crossed as the set play is intended to do. It really couldn't have worked any more beautifully.

It certainly wasnt "created by Marner"...as you stated.

Sure it was. Just as I stated.

Log off man.

You're too invested.

There's no way and no real reason to work this hard diminishing someone who did this well.
Theres everything to like about last night as a Leafs fan, a team Canada fan and a hockey fan.
Ive seen Habs fans saying Marner should have won MVP of the tournament.

To continue to attack him the way you are makes you look like a real nutter.

Even if you cant saying anything nice about him, just take a break for a day. Let the rest of us enjoy his accomplishments.

There are like 30 pages of fan-boyism for Marners next big deal and you are saying the counter argument is a problem?

Why is everyone trying to get marner paid?! You like Holmbergs and Domi's over real good depth?

I don't get it

I think Mcdavid is saying that this was a offensive system called the box 1. And it can cause the center and D man to get crossed up..in this case Matthews and Fox did. Which can open up a slot shot (which happened) and Marner found it? Am I wrong?

That doesn't mean Marner created it...that means the line executed a box 1 and it worked to a T. Makar executed it...Mcdavid executed it... Marner executed it.

Marner didn't "create" it. As the poster I responded to said. He literally went to a set spot and made a set play.
This is always the danger in a short series with different systems compared to what they usually play. It is precisely those kinds of plays that are difficult to react to quickly with confidence in your system.

Matthews had the best game of all the U.S players, Slavin with honourable mention.

Don't be silly Metroid. We know you want to win and have JT fulfill his Pajamma Cup dreams.
I wanna be extra silly. I want to see you more angry and miserable going forward.
Then see the leafs win when marner makes 15 mil and Tavares re-signs for 8 mil (big discount from his current 11 mil)
Go leafs go!

Why would I lose it?
No lol not you
The wave. I think my quote thing got all wonky.

I am happy and still stoked about winning but have third party pain at the thought of overpaying Mitch.

The only thing this game proved was how inconsistent Mitch Marner is in big series. It makes it perfectly clear that we should not sign him or cave into his overpay demands and rather take the sane and rational non knee jerk approach. That means watching him close in the playoffs to see if he can actually have success for once in his adult life, outside a one off oddball tournament that excluded half the best European players.

The cheer for Canada winning and rara support for his contribution to the win understandable.

The war against MLSE catastrophic errors wages on. Another day another hurdle.

Not sure if its more sad how badly you are struggling to find something negative to say about Mitch or if you really believe what you are saying.

Leading all players in primary assists = inconsistent ...OK buddy... what ever you say....

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...... hush....

It's funny as well to me we expect instant chemistry with guys who's never played together. It doesn't necessarily work that way, it's a coach on paper moving chess pieces, seeing what works. People miss the fact he thought so highly of Mitch he actually put him with the best player in the game to start. And, Marner was so effective last night, reintroduced him there to spark the greatest player in the game. Throw in a clutch OT winner that everyone here would have choked on, I'd say dude showed up and got shit done.

This place will be back to negativity and bs in two days, it's just a toxic environment. I'm proud of this team and darn proud Marner performed on the biggest stage. If a guy like Brady T says this was the biggest game of his career, with a recent ring, no downer is going to deflate the significance of what it meant.

It's what losers do when they cant accept that the crap they have been peddling for months, is exactly that crap. Their ego's are so fragile, they dog paddle through the sea of their own ignorance to try and find that one little lifejacket of truth that never comes to them, because as we all know they are simply wrong ... their blindness to realty is expected...disappointing but expected.

I support all hockey players with good price to performance ratios. That is mostly weighted to the playoffs. If Mitch is getting shit on its because one of the most reasonable people on HFBoards (Me) is pointing out the legitimate concern. He can take less money or do us a solid in say giving us term with no NMC in the final years, but he won't because he is selfish and wants it all.

These are cart before the horse, cake and eat it too, spoiled stars in Toronto and Nylander is not an exception.

Matthews is on the fairest contract. He is injured though, so it looks bad sometimes.

4 nations was solid for Mitch, of the 3, he needed that the most, setting up the winning goal is big for him.

Sucks for Matthews but his best game was the final, defensively stout (outside the final goal) & his final game was his best, he & Guentzel were in on everything around the net.

Shhhhhhhhh

Take less as in take less than he deserves? Why take less when no one else is? it is up to management to build the roster not Mitch.

This is how the convo goes

Management: Hey we are incompetent, we cant draft, cant sign effective UFA's or develop talent if our lives depended on it. Will you take less to help us cover up for our own incompetence?

Mitch: Surreeeeeeee sounds like the plan, lets F me over and my family, so you incompetent people can keep your jobs. Sign me up!

If you look at players drafted in Mitch's draft year and after, only ONE player has more points than Marner and his name is McJesus. Marner has done everything asked of him an individual player to deserve a raise and he deserves to be one of the top paid players. Full stop.

Players get paid for individual contributions in the regular season they do not get paid for playoffs, end of story stop sentence.

Coaches and GM's get paid to build championship teams. Players dont do strategy, they dont do scouting, they dont build rosters. End of sentence.

Any argument that I've read on this forum about why we should walk from Mitch has been a poorly thought out non sequitur.

Mitch is elite, he will sign here for 12 to 14 mil, the sooner you get over it the sooner you can move on to bitching about the color of the Gatorade or some other inane thing. People please, for the love of god, stop with the insanity.

Both are right. It was a set play but Marner react quickly to control the puck, quickly skating with it to change the angle of passing lane and quickly send the puck right in the passing lane when it was open. Perfect execution for both Marner and mcdavid

He isn't a guy we can rely on in hard playoff series to win with. Look he can go get 12-14m and we will probably be the ones that pay it. We will not win. Can not win with the way the money is distributed on this team.

We have tenders for now. Defenders for now. Those defenders are old man. NMCs. We need to win now or wait years

The four nations was a neat little tournament. I liked it. It primed us for the Olympics but Canada USA should be a seperate best of 7 tournament.

Marner is a victim of being on a team designed by Dubas who locked all the pieces in. Shanahan wanted to keep the core together for sure but the cap is a mess and quality of depth terrible.

I just want to win a cup after decades. Had I know 11.5m would go to Nylander I would have put up the same fuss.

It's business and winning not personal.

Didn't Boston execute a set play to eliminate us last year? That is what hockey is, strategy, the team that executes best wins. He kinda did create it, he had to move multiple steps to his right once he received the puck to find the passing lane, not every player is that agile and that smart with the puck, to think that quick and have the stones to make that pass. that pass is just inches to the right and the puck is easily intercepted, and it's a 3 on 1 break away for the US.

Why do you think Mcdavid decided to throw in the explanation of that it's a system and also provide details that the play is designed to cross up the oppositions D and C?

If we want we could credit Makar for an astounding execution of the box 1, and also for putting just enough velocity on his pass to entice Fox to go behind the net.

Mcdavid for an astounding effort to find the perfect opening in the slot for the box 1 set play. And for the incredible snipe, top corner on one of the leagues best goalies.

"Mcdavid isn't going to say well...what an incredible play by me and what a shot by me too... did you see that shot?"
My guess is because he knows there are a lot of fans who dont really know hockey as much as they think they do.
