I think Marner is devaluing himself at this tournament. Cut ice time means a Stanley Cup champ coach who has coached against him doesn't see him as a go to guy. He is a reg. season phenom who becomes less in the tougher games. I have no problem walking away if they fizzle in the playoffs again. Who cares about all these people who accept losing?
That is not what Cooper said. I mean it is possible that it is what Cooper truly feels about Marner, but someone will have to ask him.

It means exactly what I said. He did not fit with the elite players. He needed different types of players. Worker bee players to help him (because he struggled)

You know you can read between the lines with what he is saying super easy.

If you need worker bees. You are not a complete player. You need worker bees to make it work.

You follow lol

Add. This also confirms our groups analysis that MM can not drive a line.
Worker bees are just a fancy name for energy guys…….usual relegated to 3rd or 4th line duties..
But ya the leafs should give him 13-14 million…….insanity

That is one interpretation. I don't care if they decide to not pay him and he walks or is traded. I am not worried about Marner's future. If is part of a Maple Leafs Cup wining team, that is great. If someone else is, well, that is great too.

Yeah, likely because he played half the penalty kill.
He killed one minute of penalties.

What about all the other penalty killers, why didn't they have low minutes since they killed penalties?
What about on the Leafs, why does he lead the team in ice time most nights, even though he plays the penalty kill?

You must be sore from all the mental gymnastics you're doing.

Yeah, there was only one power-play for Finland. Brenden Hagal over a minute and Cirelli almost a minute. Those were Marners usual line-mates against Finland. The highest ice time for a forward who killed a penalty (almost a minute). was Stone 15:45.

Who are you going to trade who is of any value to another team and doesn’t have a full NMC ? Knies or McMann ?

Well mature adults are able to sit down explain their financial position, team needs and future plans going forward. If it doesn't align with Marners vision for the future then at that point you have to ask him if he'd waive, and where he would like to go.

However, not under any circumstances do you take the negotiations to the media. They made that mistake with Sundin, and it caused a lot of hard feelings. The Leafs thought they could control the narrative and tried to demonize Sundin and making it uncomfortable for him to stay.

Sundin was a good soldier while wearing that C for 11 years and they treated him shabbily, instead of doing the right thing with him.

I'm sure if Mitch really wants to stay he may be a little more reasonable in negotiations, how much, who knows. Maybe offer Mitch a 12m 2 yr deal and when the caps at 105+ if theres been some playoff success, especially on Mitch' part then you make him a lifetime Leaf.

I'd say do the same thing with JT. Also by that time you'd know what you really have in Minten Danford, Chadwick, Grebenkin, Holinka, Webber and Cowan.

Matthews played 2 games
yeah sorry about that

I read that the game wasn't deemed important enough so he sat out! Isn't he the captain of the US squad, you'd think he would've wanted to play and lead his squad, even if it was just to roll up some more points to go along with that 1 assist he got on the 4th goal against the Finns in game1.

Thanks for pointing that out for me, much appreciated!

He had an upper body issue along with the game not being deemed important enough.

The way Marchand stopped skating and just stood by the door. Wonder how he felt about a player 10 years younger and on the same team as him trying to out wait him?

Also this:

Reporter: so I saw you came out last.

Marner: Yeah

Reporter: Crosby in Pittsburgh is second last.

Marner: Yeah

Reporter: Did he set it up, knowing how superstitious he is, that he was second last here?

Marner: Yeah. I mean, I was kind of just sitting there and I didn't know what was going to happen. Then he just said, 'yeah you can go last. I go second last'. So, that's kind of how it went out and how it happened."

Understandable that Crosby and Marchand would have to settle with Marner about who gets what superstition.

I watched the USA-CAN game tonight.

They actually took Marner off McDavid's line to start the third period of that game. Replaced him with Mark Stone. Then reduced Marner to the role of fourth line chump the next game.

Gee I wonder why they did that.

I think they did that to try to find something that worked and to find a goal

Is that why they put Marner with Hagel and Cirelli the next game.

Replacing god on skates with Mark Stone to drive offense is brilliant. Only Cooper could be genius enough to think of that. He must be splitting the talent up.

Cooper just wants Marner driving his own line is all.

I don't know, this just feels like such an unhealthy way to consume this historic hockey

1. Who cares about Brad Marchand, I hate that guy as a leafs fan. So good on Mitch.

2. This is what I meant by you’re just a hater. This is just irrelevant. They both have the same ritual and superstition. You posting this like it’s supposed to mean something is honestly crazy, obsessive and disturbing. Stick to critiquing his game, you find every little reason to shit on the guy, it’s getting old. A lot of it has little to nothing to do with hockey.

It is definitely as relevant as McDavid using the interjection - um.

How so? It’s a contrived tournament that is basically just the USA vs Canada.

I don’t think this will be looked upon like the summit series, or Olympics, or even the NHL playoffs.
Idk I'm not looking to define what counts as historic but I've been watching hockey for 30+ years and I can't recall many games that felt more meaningful than saturday night's. combined with the level of play, the political context, the location, the attention, the way it started. I am getting worked up just thinking about it

My interest in the games has grown exponentially starting with the first game. It didn't really interest me beforehand;I was always going to watch the tournament, but more in passing. Now, I am looking forward with great anticipation for the final.
