I'll also add that Cooper and Co IMO overestimated his coaching abilities by putting Marner on line 1 (despite his documented struggles in the playoffs) and underestimated how much of a distraction Marner could become if the experiment didn't work out. If Marner was on line 3 or 4 in a checking and PK1 role , which he's a very good defensive player...then I think he'd also being getting less attention. Putting him with Mcdavid was a weird move...in addition to the mismatch in Mcdavid being the fastest player on the team and Marner being one of the slowest.

I think Cooper did us a solid by doing this. We now have some legit video in top competition of what his range of ability is. It's no nonsense real play at the highest level.

Watch Mitch without the puck the last games. It's obvious why he was demoted.

The distraction comment I think is dumb. Everything else I can't argue tbh. That might be a first.

he's been about what I expected

he wasn't gonna provide scoring for the team, that's not his game
he wasn't really gonna provide offence as there are more options who are better
he has been relatively solid defensively, which was a big reason he is here

it sucks that i am saying this about 5th highest scoring player in the NHL and 3rd highest scoring winger.

Then he shouldn’t be a top line winger for the leafs he should be lower in the line up and away from matthews hopefully chief and tre see that

The questions is what’s better Marner at 13-14 million or 2-3 players at that combined price range? I know people are going to say you don’t know how the team will use that money but the team has not been successful in 9 years. If they use the money wrong and the team is still not successful what’s the difference?

It's not just the 13-14, it's the 8 years they're going to be asking for, that could be a problem down the line. What kind of world are we going to leave for our children?

11th forward tonight, only Konecny had less TOI
He was on the PK, and helped kill it off.

That's the beauty of being the coach of a player who doesn't answer to the owners, doesn't need to play nice, whisper sweet nothings in the ears of media or the fanbase. Coaching a nation means one thing: do whatever you believe is right in order to win.

When down 4-3, he has Crosby, McKinnon and Toews on the ice. Veteran winners who have risen to the occasion time and again.

Crosby sacrifices the body and gets the EN. Which Leaf would have taken that hit that takes the wind out of you in order to stop the bleeding?

Marner is an extremely good player, he has his weaknesses but if I was defending a lead he'd be the guy I was throwing over the boards every second shift

This tournament is helping to clarify things though, I'm finding it hard to justify 13-14M a year

In fact I'm thinking Nylander % of the cap and if he doesn't like it he can walk

This could be costly if he struggles during the playoffs again

Marners value as an asset right now is zilch. Our collective asset pool is Cowan, Minten, and some stuff. We're keeping Knies.

In each of the last eight years is there any year that we wouldn't have made the playoffs if we swapped out Marner for a half priced UFA? We couldn't have done worse in the playoffs.

If the team busts this year and Marner doesn't work for a ninth time, running it back is a losers game and would only bolster the losing culture further.

We can't be as scared as Shanny already looks.
Zilch, really? This isnt something I say a lot if ever, but, ever watched hockey?

Came here to post this. He’s totally out to lunch in terms of it being a distraction. I don’t think anyone on the team or anyone watching honestly gives a f*** where Marner plays. We just want Canada to win (if you’re Canadian)

But I do agree Marner should have just started in checking role.
