Mitch Marner, Yet Again

If the Leafs want Mitch to shine this post-season all Berube has to do is convince him he's actually playing for Team Canada and that guy on his line taking the faceoffs is McDavid, not Matthews.

Not a good night by any stretch of the imagination, but he did set up AM with an absolute sitter that he flubbed. After that though, that 6v5 was some of the most tragic looking play you’ll ever see — from everyone.

Almost seems like there’s a segment of “fans” hoping for the Leafs to lose so they can blame everything on Marner.

Their lives are going to be ruined when he signs a new 8 year deal with Toronto.

Sorry about your luck, Marner haters.

No. You are wrong.

A certain percentage of fans have watched Mitch fail in games 5 6 7 for years now and are tired of his p***ycat play.

As soon as games start getting physical Marner starts playing hot potato. He couldn't get the puck off his stick fast enough.

The game wasn’t even that physical. So not sure what you’re talking about. The puck was dying on Knies’ stick tonight. The top line couldn’t get any offensive zone time. Knies I think tried to enter 4 or 5 times, got taken down multiple times with clutches, grabs, everything you can think of, no penalty, loss of possession and then they were forced into defending. Didn’t love Marner’s play in the defensive zone tonight either but your analysis of what happened tonight is way off. That’s basically the top lines night tonight, they couldn’t get a clean entry into the zone at all, thus no offensive zone pressure or time.

The 6 on 5, between Rielly and Marner idk who was worse tonight. Both were awful up top.

Matthews and Nylander have also both been part of all those playoff losses - - and each of them literally no showed for a couple games in last year’s postseason.

Do you want to run both of them out of town too?

Nylander is consistent from game 1 to game 7.

Marner is not. Matthews also gets a lot of blame. Nylander will get a lot more blame if he doesn't show as his contract is now on par with the other 3.

Do you understand the context now behind why fans treat them differently despite a blanket "the team loses" trope.

Matthews is equally dog shit in the playoffs and he’s the bigger disappointment in my honest opinion. Yeah Marner’s numbers suck, but we have a guy who goes from a 70 goal scorer to what? A 20 goal scorer in the playoffs? That’s BRUTAL. He’s supposed to be the GUY and honestly outside of the Washington game in 2017 and Tampa 2023, when has Matthews really taken over a game or series in a clutch moment?

Matthews gets a pass because of his regular season accolades that’s it. If you look at it objectively, and think about impact vs expectations, easily he is the biggest disappointment of the team because of what he’s supposed to represent for this franchise. For a superstar goal scoring guy, he does not take over in the playoffs for sustained periods. We can bitch about Marner and Nylander all we want, but if 34 continues his way this team will never win shit. Even if you get rid of Marner. Marner isn’t the issue with this team, 34 not being a superstar and carrying the team like he’s supposed to is the real issue that many fans don’t want to talk about. He ain’t no McDavid, he ain’t no Nate Mac or Crosby and he’s supposed to be.

As I’ve explained numerous times to the casual observers, novice fans and bandwagon jumpers, the two biggest issues holding back the Leafs from playoff success were terrible goaltending and an incompetent coach.

Treliving has resolved both of those issues.

Greatly inflated price for a decline asset. Sign me up haha
Everyone is going to decline when they sign 8 years in their late 20's. Willy, MacKinnon, Drai. Just have to accept there will be some crappy years at the end just like Pittsburgh is experiencing atm.

Doesn't look like he's signing an 8 year deal. He wants to test the market meaning an 8 year deal is off the table. He's either leaving for a non pressure environment or he's taking a short term deal for 13m per then he'll want 17m x 8 when the cap is up....yes, it's the Auston Matthews playbook too, but Mitch Marner is no Austin Matthews.

As I've explained multiple times. This theory is just incorrect.

The main reason we lose is we score 2.1 goals a game.

All this money on offence and we can't score.

If we scored 3 goals a game average and still lost I'd be willing to blame the goalie.

We just suck at scoring goals in the postseason.

Agreed... Marner wanted a short term deal last contract too but noone would give it to him. That was apparently a hold up on one of the offersheets too. Marner wanted short term and the team wouldnt do it.

Or maybe....... And hear me out!!....... Just maybe that said segment of fans have seen 8 years of data of him disappearing come playoff time every single year and are sick of it.

Treliving keeps saying we want Marner long term... so maybe hes dropping hints to the media on the hold up.

We overpaid on his RFA maybe he should accept an underpay on his UFA sunset contract. He doesnt work like that though. He is a good player, not a playoff warrior so at this point if cup pursuit is the objective is it addition by subtraction?

Throughout their careers, Marner has outperformed Matthews in the playoffs.

And Matthews literally disappeared last year when he decided to sit out two games because he had diarrhea. Not exactly what you’d expect from a captain.

Do you want to run Matthews out of town too?
