Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Unpopular opinion (obviously), but I genuinely think they are operating like winning is important.

The issue is they don't have a bloody clue how.

They spend to the cap every year.
They spend big money on their staff.
They spend big money on their amenities.
They spend big money on all sorts of services and tools for the players.

They're trying to win, they just don't have any sort of plan or idea on how. When you run your hockey operation in a season-by-season basis, this is what you end up with.

On the Matthews thing - would it surprise anyone if Marner signed a 2 year extension, and then both Matthews and Marner hit UFA again in 2027? Potentially even reuniting on the same team?
They prematurely thought their 3 high draft picks were good enough and tried to build around them.

McDavid has the second-highest playoff points per 60 minutes in NHL history, second only to Wayne Gretzky. Do you realize what that means?

Marner isn’t even worthy of washing McDavid’s jockstrap, let alone being mentioned in the same breath as playoff McDavid.

Yes, you're being wildly delusional.
Do points suddenly matter again for non-Marner players? I thought only goals were allowed to be talked about in this thread.

Well, every player is like that, right? In a cap system, each player is going to be contextualized by their salary/cap hit; that's just natural.

But, there's the background dealings of Marner's camp (agent and Dad), particularly the agent whose general philosophy seems to be getting them to maximize their income regardless of the wedge it may cause between the team and player.

No one would disagree that he's a fine player, but there seems to be a lack of objectivity with some and with him regarding Marner's standing in the league, and what he should be compensated., as well as the impression of being jilted and not apricated due being in the Matthews' shadow.

When you put all of it together, you can see why the whole situation can rub people the wrong way.

Ferris?? Lol

Come on this is all the Marners.

Paul Marner literally called reporters in 2019 to complain that his son wasn’t being considered for the Maple Leafs captaincy and also hadthe reporter (Jonas) write a 30ish page writeup on his son (he was forcefully getting that recognition his son was never getting!).

In the same interview, he lamented that during junior hockey, Mitch was always in McDavid’s shadow, even when Marner had the more productive game, it was McDavid who was talked about in the media.

Paul Marner even phoned Doug Gilmour to complain about Mike Babcock.

Darren Ferris, later admitted that the Marners wanted to be financially compensated on his RFA contract for not receiving his rookie bonuses.

It was also widely circulated by Freidman, Mackenzie, Johnson in 2019, that Marner was not happy with his contract offers being less than Auston Matthews. Note, he wasnt mad that his contract was less than he wanted.... he was mad it was LESS THAN Matthews!

This clearly isn’t Ferris pulling the strings. There is a clear pattern here. The Marners are obsessed with being paid more and treated better than everyone else.

And this isnt just the working od P.Marner....Mitch Marners incredibly inflated ego is on display every time he is interviewed and with everything he does on the ice.

When Matthews was introduced as captain, Marner kept talking about himself, and saying "us"...when asked about Matthews.

When Marner was asked about Matthews scoring his 60th goal, he led with talking about himself, "yeah "I" was gonna get in trouble because "I" kept passing up scoring chances to pass to him" (he didnt assist on Matthews 60th btw). Have to interject his contributions to Matthews goal scoring achievements of course!

Look at 4nations... he wasn't picked in the first 6 and didnt have a captaincy letter, yet he tries to outwait Marchand for last off ice, and tries to outwait Crosby for last on ice and then of course he made sure he was front and center for the team photo with the cup. All a coincidence im sure...!

Lol this is not the doing's of Ferris at all.

Yes, I would call for Tre's departure immediately.
So would the media.

Marner has to go.
Even if Matthews is the problem.

That's sports baby.

Marner will do well drawing in crowds for Nowhereville, USA.

He's a great player, who's game doesnt translate into the post season.

like Matthews.
I meant to say "contract", not "extension" - as in, he signs short term somewhere else, to coincide with Matthews becoming a UFA, and then they both discuss where they go next.

Should we spend on Ehlers? 60 point player only playing 15 minutes a night. With 18-20 minutes he's probably a 70+ point guy. Then we'd have an actual player in the top 6. However, someone might pay him a shocking amount

Replace one player who struggles in the playoffs, with another who struggles in the playoffs?

DNA CHANGE, baby!

It’s actually not purely about “greed” that makes Marner unpopular. That’s the start of it but factor in jealousy, resentment of internal status, on ice failure most importantly, and an extremely vocal and egotistical sub fanbase that is razor focused on his superiority and justifying the original greed that never translates into team success.

So rumours... seems like a valid reason.

Yeah so, Marchand could be greedy, but he’s also successful, entertaining and he also doesn’t have a home made press corps to pump him up when he doesn’t deserve it.

Team sport............ shockingly.

Both you and AC are just non stop in supporting the idea that MM is being FORCED out by the fans.

Both the team and MM just want to move on, let it go.

Who cares if fans hate MM or love MM, the fact that MM and the CORE 5 failed repeatedly just shows that Leafs need changes in order for them to WIN the CUP.

Lastly, players just need to ignore the noises and play the game. Look at the Panthers, they don't give a crap about anything but winning the Cup. And the only weakness I can think of is the age of Bob.
Really wish the Leafs are more like that, just play to win the Cup.

He is leaving because he wants to... not sure I ever said differently.

The team doesn't want to move on.

Didn't read past the first two sentences since you were wrong there.

People here, myself included, want Marchand bc he wins, and perform when it matters.

Also, nobody is saying Marchand is a great guy. If anything, we all know he is far from it.

* except when in a leadership role in Boston, only on stacked teams.

I'm all for the players getting paid be it here or in some hockey nether world. Players should never have to take a penny less than they are comfortable with. Fans who think players owe them to take a discount so they can feel good about the team they support are completely out to lunch. Narcissists fans unite!

100%.

Tavares is a good example of a player who took less, and the fans don't care.

Never actually thought of things this way - so much of the frustration surrounding Marner, is the cult of ridiculous excuses that follow his every move.

There's still people here who genuinely think he was in the right during the 2019 contract negotiations, and think that the contract was fair market value for him.

Mitch's Bitches vs Actual Leafs fans

Shockingly, I think a lot of people just think hockey is a team game and think he is singled out far too much.

Especially since the team is winning when he is on the ice, usually.

What's the definition of an actual Leafs fan? Someone who complains about everything and never enjoys a game? It actually kind of fits...

Best player in the league, your 2024-25 P/60 leader in the playoffs.

It's the same hypocrites who complain about everything on this board and then praise other players who do the same thing.

Marchand is being reported to be chasing money for his last contract, and everyone wants him who hates Marner.

It is just funny at this point.
Yeah, it's weird that a mercenary who earns his money is treated differently than one who doesn't.

He produces less than Marner... I hate that fact too, because we might sign Marchand for an overpayment, and Marner is going to walk, but those are the facts.

You just don't get it. You don't. It's not about the regular season. He produces in big games. I don't care where the Leafs finish in the standings. They can make the playoffs without Marner, but with Marchand on board instead. In the playoffs, he can help you more. Maybe he lights a fire under Matthews ass? Maybe score a few goals in a critical game 5 or 7?

So he doesn't produce in the unimportant games in the playoffs?

He produces less than Marner in the playoffs, just trying to figure out why.

And which games are unimportant? I am sure going down 3-1 in the first 4 games is not ideal.

leons the 2nd best player in the league he is not overpaid lol

But he can't win.

They just aren't good enough.

This seems like a terrible idea to take more money.

Can you just give me the rules around when players are allowed to chase money?

Draisaitl took more than anyone needs in a life time and it will hurt his team's chances of success, but it is fine according to you, so when is it allowed?
