Here’s the thing though. Marner makes more money on his current deal than Makar, Point, Reinhart and Crosby, trailing only McDavid and Mackinnon.

So he doesn’t have the prestige to be a Team Canada first six guy or whatever arbitrary honour that’s been bestowed whatever that’s worth. He’s not valued like that in the game.

And now he wants more money.

Dubas wasnt a very good GM and still isnt, his rosters suck (other than the players gifted to him). However, I wonder how much of thr Marner contract was on him and how much not trading Marner was on him (though I think Nylander would have likely been his first choice until recently). I also think Dubas wouldve traded him for a Karlsson package lol. So Dubas bad GM..but not sure if he is entirely to blame for this Marner situation. HOWEVER.. I wonder if he was the idiot who didnt see the NMC kicking in last two years as a leverage move that would screw the Leafs during the next contract.

Shanahan has many sound bites where he continued to say we wont making changes just to say we made changes ... he also kept referencing great players who didnt win until their early 30s.

My take on the whole situation is Marner’s hurt feelings all stem from a perceived injustice between how he and Auston Matthews have been treated.

Matthews gets more of the treats and golden boy treatment while getting off lightly for playoff failures.

But this whole mentality is immature and needs to be flushed out. If you’re a top 1-2 team player on a team and not taking responsibilities for your team, your head isn’t screwed on right or you don’t have the ability to deliver. Choose one. Pressure is a privilege as they say.

Here's something to consider...

Literally every single leaf besides Marner is wanting to resign with the Leafs this summer. And in the case of Knies...long term.

Maybe...just maybe...Marner was the problem as part of the leadership here in Toronto? I look back at that interaction last year with him on the bench being yelled at by Nylander looking bewildered and to Matthews for validation.

I look to him yelling at his team with dry hair and no injuries. Maybe just maybe he does not "inspire" and comes off as "clique-y" and weak.

Maybe a Leaf team without Marner is more attractive?

Sure, maybe a team who is desperate for talent and just wants to make the playoffs will do it....but a team who wants to ein the cup and has high end talent already, he doesnt make sense.

Marner isnt gonna make Chicago win a cup, but he will help increase their win %. Same with San Jose. But it will just make their draft positions worse and put them further from the cup.

Maybe Marner makes sense for LA, considering they have old elite players who might have a couple years left in the tank for a cup run. They dont have any younger "stars" though.

So... sign Marner to his 3 year contract, try to win a cup before Kopitar and Doughty retire and then let Marner go for a rebuild.

Back in 2019, Marner’s camp argued he should be paid in line with teammates , not league comparables and even pushed to recover rookie bonuses Lou Lamoriello had withheld.

Funny how those arguments have quietly disappeared.

Since then, Marner hasn’t lived up to the contract he received. Meanwhile, Auston Matthews has clearly separated himself, with a trophy case that includes:

-3 Rocket Richards
- 1 Calder
- 1 Hart
- 1 Ted Lindsay trophy
- Lindsay finalist
- Selke finalist

Marner, by comparison:

Yet today, there’s no talk of Marner taking less to reflect the value he failed to deliver on his last deal.
And there’s no interest in widening the salary gap between him and Matthews, despite how far apart they are in performance.

Similarly William Nylander has outplayed or at the very least been on lar with Marner for the past couple of seasons and Marner shows no interest in taking a contract anywhere close to him.
