Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

The appeal of this team has been trending downwards because the core players are not superstars worth bandwagoning on for championship runs, not because of the podcast world, and Mark Masters and fan chatter.
Whatever the reasons are for it, the Leafs are on the precipice of needing to address it, ASAP.

It should have raised alarm bells when Ryan O'Rielly chose to not even engage in extension talks here despite a relatively successful rental experience.

Demoted from 3rd line to 4th by game 3. In game 3, he was least played player along with Konecny.

If he truly had strong games to start the series, it’s hard to explain the coach dropping him to the 2nd line by game 2, and then the 3rd line by game 3 and giving him the fewest minutes in game 3.

More likely, he had a couple of standout plays that masked an otherwise underwhelming performance.
Good god man

Marner does not "become invisible when the going gets tough", and nobody is suggesting that Marner should be given the highest cap hit percentage in the NHL, or even on the Leafs. I don't really care how many shots Marner got in the last 3 games, but that question tells me two things - that you fundamentally misunderstand how Marner brings impact, and that you'll cherry pick tiny samples of a pretty meaningless stat to misrepresent player quality.

You have no idea what Marner wants. But he's earned an amount a lot closer to Matthews than you'll ever admit, and his contract would be over 15m today.

He hasn't been overpaid the last 6 years.

Leafs fan, obviously, which is why I like people and actions that make the Leafs better. The real question is why you like people and actions that make the Leafs worse.
Real question lol. So tell me, how marner’s 14 million salary makes Leafs better?

The fan base thing is so so funny. Look there’s some crazies out there, like there is with every major team in every major city. Which is just super bad

But we also got clowned for celebrating when these guys won a ROUND. This organization retires numbers, builds statues for players that never won anything.

Gilmour, Sundin (before his exit), Clark all didn’t win shit but are LOVED because they tried.

Marner is a great player, will probably go on and do great things. Part of me does feel bad for him because I truly think he understood what it meant to be a leaf and actually wanted that pressure. I just don’t think he could handle it. Also cry me a river on the Florida pressure conversation. Some people want to play where there is no pressure and nobody cares. Matthew Tkachuk is one of them, because he can’t handle it. (Maybe it’s a London Knight thing)

But this organization has basically given Mitch Marner everything he asked for except bonuses in his first contract and the C on his chest.

But similar to some statements, cry me a river when it comes to being a toxic. All we asked of these guys is to try.

To be fair if NHL players spend time going on hfboards to see what’s being said about the team they’re probably not the right fit for the leafs.

I think this whole thing about what is said on a message board does not affect the players at all. If they choose to listen to radio or podcasts that’s on the player. It’s easy to avoid media blackout.
Every pro players in every sports will spend time on forums or social medias and read comments.

Getting on social medias is part of life.

Should they take it personally? That’s up to them.
And I highly doubt that they don’t like reading fans stating they played great, they are amazing….

The problem is that they have their own echo chamber to the point that even when they had a horrible game, some of them will believe it is not their fault and they played well just others didn’t….

Honesty, if players can’t handle reading comments on forums like here or social medias. Then don’t read them.

I won’t be surprise if some players actually do post comment on here or social medias heck I would even go and state that some players might even said so and so had a bad game and needs to be better….

I don't understand what you're getting at here. Marner said he's going to July 1. Fans are the one freaking out and throwing a fit. I see no turmoil over on Marner's side of things, he's been quiet other than releasing a statement that his charity event is cancelled.

Talks aren't happening because he's going to July 1. Same way it's been since the season ended. Everything else has been people writing fanfic and getting upset about their own fanfic.
Agreed. Marner fans are having a fit over him not being signed (even though that's his decision), and Leafs fans are mostly just laughing at them and waiting for him to leave.

15 more sleeps and Marner is gone.

so excited.

Not my problem but it's going to be the Teams problem if it isn't already.
When the team wins, it won’t be poison.

Don’t blame the fans for players leaving or not wanting to play for the Leafs.

Blame the team for not winning, players for choking, as winning will cure everything.

As I had never seen a Cup winning team getting booed by their fans when they hoist the Cup or fans throw jerseys on the ice when the players lift the Cup.

Toronto is like any other top markets in sports, NY, Boston, Madrid, Barcelona, London…. Fans understand and appreciate when the team wins or at the very least did their best. Team that showed grit, heart…stuff that Leafs had not, esp in playoffs.

I believe most fans here would be fine if the core 5 really showed they dominated the game but just came up short and lose to the Panthers but that’s not even close to be the case. And it is a reoccurring theme every playoffs. The game before they get eliminated will often be the best game they play in the series and then get crushed the next game.

Ah - his second contract, where he provided a number and they wouldn't let him play until they gave it to him.

Nylander came down on his number... Management held firm on theirs.

Regardless, that's drama... which was what was said to only happen with Marner.

It's going to be harder to win when the 'poison' makes it difficult to attract players.

Leaf fans want to see the team have success. The poisonous environment that's being created is a detriment to that.

I'm not sure it was claimed that only Marner had drama, but he certainly seems to create a lot more.

But I think a lot of the drama, particularly here, has more to do with the wildly different opinions of his value, which doesn't seem to be as much of an issue with anyone else.

The fans seem to create more... sitting out for 1/4 of a season to accept the original contract seems like more of a dramatic situation than words...

What "poisonous environment that's being created"?

If anything the poisonous environment has been a problem for a while, and finally may be addressed.
