Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Always crazy how unhinged some fans are... go outside, and you will realize there is more to live for than just hockey.

Team Canada also played him 3rd most out of any forward last tourney... so I guess in reality, they think he is the 3rd best forward.

Is who gets named first the "expected best players" or something?

Weird that you have to point to expected stats over the actual results.
Man started on the top line and continued to get demoted throughout the tourney. The same brass that just watched him play a few months ago decided he didnt do enough to be named one of the first 5 forwards. I'm glad the Team Canada brass values winners above anything else.

Didn't they just name the same 6 names from the last time?

Where did he finish?

Who were the leaders in ice time?

Chemistry is a thing, so yes, the lines got juggled.

Sorry facts are not something you enjoy, but he finished on the 1st line, he played the 3rd most of any forward on the team, and he was very important to them winning (maybe even the most important).

A bunch of assists playing on the top line with Knies, Matthews and the top PP with Nylander, Tavares, Matthews, Knies. All thanks to his linemates and not him. How many points did Marner put up last postseason when Matthews was injured and only played 4 games? Marner had a grand total of 3 in 7 games. And once again was one of the players sleeping on the Pasta series winning goal.

He had 1 shot TOTAL in games 2-6 vs Fla.

He had 2 goals in 13 games. 1 was a breakaway from jumping the D zone, the other a fluke shot from the perimeter.

This guy is so obviously useless that its shocking people keep defending him.

Look at his Playoff shot locations. Absolutely Garbage! Rantanen probably had mor shots, from the slot in 1 game this postseason.

if people don't want him that's fine but there's no need to try to paint him like he's a passenger who only leeches points off his linemates !

Mitch is an elite play driving winger who is also very good defensively , hockey is a team game and the entire team has failed so easy on scapegoating Mitch like he was the only issue .

anyway as i said i'm trying to be consistent with the opinions on this board so if Marner does decide to re-sign with us and takes less than the 14 plus million that's being floated around that teams are prepared to offer then he should be praised for giving us a discount to play for his home town team and given a pass for the entirety of his contract

No one wants to be here unless the money is right... Do you think Matthews is signing for league minimum?

Everyone has a price to come play here, will never understand this illogical idea.
Wrong. There are players that will come to Toronto for less then what they could have signed some place else.

Tavares, Bertuzzi, Roberts, Corson, Mogilny, and many more that I can list off.

Its an honor and dream to wear the Toronto Blue.....but your right now everyone is the same and chase $$$$

You started listing players from 20 years ago... so I'd love to hear about all the players who came here during their prime for less, and recently since I don't care about 1962 or whatever random year you are going to discuss, I'm less concerned about Gio and Spezza as they were retirement contracts.

Tavares is the only one I can think of, and I think the fans don't appreciate it... I wouldn't care to suit up here for less after that.

How about a bet.

If Marner doesn't get named to Team Canada, I will leave hfboards.

If Marner does get named to Team Canada, you leave hfboards.

Trying to draw any conclusion from the 6 named is pretty silly, although it's not surprising that it's being attempted.
Same thing was attempted when the 4 Nations was released and then Marner starts the tournament on the top line.
Noted playoff beast and proven winner Marchand was dropped from the list.

Some people are truly delusional when 14x7 is not good enough for them. It's like they think they will be 25 years old forever. In 3 years, Marner will be 31...does he think some team will offer him 15x7 when he's 31?
Kadri got $7 million × 7 years when he was 31. That is 8.48% of the cap.

When Marner is 31, the cap will be around $123 million. Marner would need 10.5% to hit $13 million. Stars are getting 13–15% currently. But also, he would be 38 at the end of that contract too.

If he signs for 8 years today, he would be 36 at the end of that deal.

At 36, he may not even get a new contract. If he does, there’s a very good chance it’s league minimum.

So... it makes sense financially that he would want to do the 3-year and then the 8-year.

But... it's not beneficial to the team, because they will never get any major cap relief on Marner’s contract relative to other teams’ stars—until Marner is in his late 30s and at that point a cap burden, lol, and only Marner benefits.

Also, the risk for the player is they become seriously injured and lose years of pay because they took the short-term deal.

...which brings into question whether they would play hard in the playoffs or play "safe" to not risk serious injury.

I think most would play conservatively, knowing they could cost themselves $60+ million in earnings.

I don't know about that , the over the top hand wringing over letting the great Sam Lafferty walk didn't die down until his mini hot streak to start the season ended and his play fell off a cliff .
I'm going to miss it. This thread has such good personalities from both sides. The drama is excellent and has only gotten better.

Reactions: leafs in five
I don’t care if Marner gave us the finger, the Leafs gave his agent the finger or they both did. However it happens, whoever it is, that’s enough of this. Go get 14+ million somewhere else.
I disagree completely - I think it matters massively how we end up here.

If the Leafs are indeed still trying to engage, it means they've learned nothing from the past 9 years - and quite clearly lack the sort of ruthlessness required to build a cup contending team.

I hope it is defeaning.. through the whole thing. What highlights will they even show? Spinorama turnovers? Bailing away from Zacha when he could have won the series against the Bruins last year?

Just can't stand this punk.. waste of 9 years.
They could show his playoff goals but it would only last about half a minute..?

2 more weeks of fighting. It's been a pleasure over the years gentlemen
Cant come soon enough. I will celebrate if Marner leaves. Im skeptical though, Marner has very specific needs and I could see if he doesnt get it, he will end up crawling back to Toronto, like he did in 2019.

If specific teams (need an elite forward to mooch off, desireable city) wont offer him a 3 year deal, or possibly 4 max (for him)... then I could see him pulling a Stamkos and turning around and signing the 8 year deal with Toronto.

This place is so poisoned. It's just a bunch of uncontrolled froth that makes little sense.
This is going to quickly become an organization that players will avoid if possible, can't blame them.
To be fair if NHL players spend time going on hfboards to see what’s being said about the team they’re probably not the right fit for the leafs.

I think this whole thing about what is said on a message board does not affect the players at all. If they choose to listen to radio or podcasts that’s on the player. It’s easy to avoid media blackout.

Do you think kids that play hockey today visit hockey sites or do only non players read about hockey on social media? Once the few that make it to the pros do you think their interest just stops?
