NJ was a masterpiece, but following that up with the Leafs rapid rebuild and then the Islanders revival - double ECFs/GMOTY.

Looking back it's funny how perfect he would have been to continue - if it wasn't obvious enough at the time. Wrote the book on everything we whiffed and then we faceplanted the numbers anyways.

I just don’t get it. Tre saying the “DNA” of the team needs to change. If your best and highest paid players, Matthews and Nylander, don’t have it, who could be brought in that would change their DNA? I think your top players need to have it, and then you bring in other players who also have it.
And Matthews throwing his teammates under the bus after the series was over, and of course not including himself, I just don’t see why the team would want to follow him after that.

Too much is made of that "DNA" quote. All the core players are locked up for multiple years, you can do the math from there.

Leaf Nation fans will look back in time and see all those regular season points and all those failed and struggling playoff results and it will not be a memorable time.

It kind of reminds me of the Rick Vaive Era in Toronto in the 1980's .. Vaive scored 50+ goals in 3 straight seasons from 1981 thru 1984 and in his 8 years in Toronto the Maple Leafs won only 2 measly playoff series.

The Marner 9 seasons 2016-2025 and the Vaive's 8 years 1979 - 1987 left the same bad taste in fans mouth for those wasted decades of Leafs history where the Stanley Cup remained so far out of reach.

Neither former Leaf player will leave behind any memorable playoff highlight moments that fans talk about for generations, because there simply weren't any.

How are those two eras even close to comparable? The Rick Vaive teams were mediocre to downright terrible, and only made the playoffs a few times because 16 of 21 teams got in and the Norris was a terrible division.

Lou was terrible with the Islander just like he was terrible with NJ in this cap era.
A stanley cup coach fell into his lap. They had success for maybe two yrs and then what? He had no clue on how to manage the cap.

You're right. He shouldn't be upset about this. He did after all get overpaid on his last contract as a result of them.

If you’re strictly counting series wins since the salary cap, the Leafs still haven’t caught Buffalo.

I watch this sport for entertainment, and this off season will be VERY entertaining. Even though Mitch couldn't get it done in the playoffs for us, I do wish him all the best on his new team. It was a treat watching him in the regular season during his tenure, and I even enjoyed his first few playoffs (Washington particularily). I have no animosity for someone I don't personally know, and at the end of the day he has to do what he and his family is comfortable with.

No point as a fan in getting emotionally involved in a specific player, just love the crest.

No but many will say, "Damn, never got to cross "Leafs winning the SC" off my bucket list". Sad that 3 such talented players do not have the DNA that it takes to win the SC. Extracting every last penny in contract negotiations will be their legacy next to their pathetic playoff record and performances. Meanwhile a player who one poster called bad at hockey is one game away from winning his 2nd SC while earning 1/3 of what our 3 losers have been paid for their playoff no shows and collapses.

Guy has an agent that loves to take his players to free agency to play these kinds of games and refuses to negotiate during the season kind of implies they didn't get the overpayment they liked last off season so they won't negotiate to try and scare the team into giving them what they want.

Not signing during the season doesn't imply anything you've claimed. Marner has avoided in-season signing distractions his whole career. There's also no evidence that he would only sign an overpayment. Though ironically, "didn't get the overpayment they liked last off season so they won't negotiate to try and scare the team into giving them what they want" is exactly what Nylander was reported to have done.

He does. Which is why he can easily tell his agent to stop with the games and negotiate a contract while he focuses on the season.

It's also why it is a distraction for the player, and players are allowed to not want to deal with that while they are focused on the current season.

Players that actually want to stay as bad as you claim he wants to would have their agent negotiate during the season and not turn down an offer just because it was during the season.

Not signing during the season doesn't say anything about his desire to stay. There is plenty of other time to get a deal done, and GMs that are actually competent at their job would have respected and worked around that.

Player got what he wanted once. Team didn't get nothing.

Team got one of the best players in the world on a surplus value contract, helping the Leafs be one of the best teams in the league throughout that contract.

Now we get to witness the same stuff where he tried to hold the team hostage to get whatever he wants again and clearly was told to go f*** himself this time.

He never held the team hostage, and he was never "told to go f*** himself". You have quite the imagination.

Guess it helps not having a pushover like the last guy eh who will just give them a blank cheque.

Marner has never been given a blank cheque. Would have helped to have the last guy around to get a fair deal done again, instead of Treliving sabotaging the team.

Stop blaming management for the people Marner surrounds himself with that give him bad career advice. Time for Marner to become a big boy and take control of his life for once.
