Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

As funny as it is to see you try to represent a holdout as signing in season, what other players choose to do is irrelevant. Some players are fine signing in-season. Some players aren't. It's up to them. Treliving gave Matthews and Nylander everything they wanted, and they never had to deal with the same kind of disrespect. Heck, trying to trade him would have been better than the stupid games they actually opted for. It's an obvious point, but if you're competent at managing a team, little procedural complications like no in-season signings don't really matter.

Marner has taken every abuse that this team, city, and fanbase could throw at him over the years in stride, and stayed loyal, committed, and philanthropic throughout. Goes out there and does his job, better than most people in the league, and all he asks for is what he's earned.

He has barely been held accountable, let alone abused. He’s been handled with kid gloves since day one.

As I’ve said before, Mitch Marner turned the media and fans into enemies and then wonders why they don’t really like him.

Sorry I didn’t go through the whole thread, what do you believe he has earned? Also, what abuses has he suffered as a player, realistically? Is this internet related stuff, being asked to waive, etc? Curious.

He wasn't great that series. But career vs career postseason comparison is one of the most lopsided things I can think of

It's funny to see people try to point out a bad series or two for other star players while it's an annual occurrence for Marner

Bad vs Florida
Beyond awful vs Boston

Oh well.. Let money Mitch chase the bag.. Can't really blame a guy for passing on giving up 4 million throughout the contract let alone going to a better taxed state and saving tens of millions for his family.

You think that’s what he’s doing?

It's called a salary. Every player gets one. What every player doesn't get is death threats, and all of the other toxic nonsense Marner has endured.

I wouldn't want to brush aside those kind of real life interactions - which go beyond our hockey chatter, and it's tough to hear that kind of fringe interaction happen to anyone, Marner, Stuart Skinner this week, whenever it happens - but you've also jumped from scapegoating management incompetence to blaming the market, which you characterized as where he wanted to stay, where he said he's treated like "a god" to general toxicity.

The best thing here is for Marner to leave and I think we should all be happy that's happening.

I feel like if you have 10,000 fans on the street supporting your team and many of which are wearing your last name on their jersey who pay a monthly cable bill, are not the problem. Someone saying something to you on the sidewalk is not a measurement of the vast majority of people who support and love you. Also, hockey is niche as hell. You think Ronaldo, Messi, Aaron Judge, Travis Kelce, LeBron don't have far more haters? They don't give a shit and don't push BS excuses.

Losing Marner is super overblown. This is the first year he’s hit 100 points and we've been more than fine.

Toss Domi up beside Matthews, with Matthew’s rebounding and Knies taking another step forward and you’ve probably replaced 80% of Mariners offence right there. Then you still have 13 mill to get two solid middle players who will both easily cover the 20%. Our depth was horrible this year because we had no talent on the third line.

The most difficult thing will be to replace mariners defence as our first line will give up some more with Domi on the first line instead. But winger defence isn’t really that important when you have Matthews playing solid defence anyway.

I do agree this year was our best shot, but that’s because the east was as weak as it’s been in a long time. We’ll be fine.

Im not sure it is overblown

Leafs without matthews
37-19-2

Leafs record without marner
21-17-5

Strange how we have such a good record without the most expensive player in the league.

You know the marner hate is completely ridiculous when people would rather have bennet at $10 mil.
What has Marner done for the Leafs in the playoffs the last 6 years when he was paid $11 million? Now he wants $14 million? Let him get it from another team. What's your main account? Obviously this is a burner account, or some Marner propagandist account.

Time to admit it, Shanahan and Dubas didn’t have a clue how to negotiate player contracts. Matthews got the money and term he wanted, and now Marner wants the same. Nylander is also overpaid, but at least he signed long term.
Matthews gets money and term he wants no matter where he is. Just like McDavid would.

Problem is Marner thinks he is as important as Matthews. He found it out the hard way in 2019 thay nobody else does, when no team would give him the 3 year contract he wanted.

Disagree with this. The targets might not have been right (definitely not in Laughton's case) but you had to go for it. If they lost to Florida in 7 while making no deadline additions we'd be wondering what could've been if they actually tried.

The fact that they might take a step back next season is even more evidence that this year was their best chance.

At the end of the day the big mistake was not trading Marner before his NMC kicked in. That's the big mistake management should answer for, when how this ended with Mitch was so predictable.
Management did answer for it, Shanahan lost his job. As he should have, he was the biggest failure once the team committed to a rebuild.

They use the haters as fuel to be the best. They talk the talk and back it up.

Well folks... I told you so!

Greedy Marner wants that short term contract!!

Dreger, whose on Marners payroll, is the one dropping the bread crumbs as usual, just as he did last contract.

"I had a teams earlier today, say they think Marner would consider takong a shorter term, that doesnt mean he is taking less on an annual salary ans ir depends what tax market were talking about...I think this increases the level of interest from a number of teams".

"You got to go in that 3-4-5 year range...and im not sayi g thsts what Marner wants but im saying there are some terms that might prefer that and might spend A LITTLE MORE, to convince him to do that, but your never gonna make up the money you would get in that 8th year or even 7th year as a true unrestrictrd free agent"

Dreger positioning it as Marner is willing to do it TO HELP TEAMS OUT lol. Trying to twist this as not the greedy move Marner has been planning all along.

No no... this is Marner trying to help teams and leave money on the table. LOL Marner and his agent think people are plain idiots...:

1:30 mark....

Just curious, did you also call matthews greedy during his contract negotiations?

Matty's great throughout the season and uninjured... But we've started almost every playoff run with a wrist or back injury. That alone has made a major impact on both their career stats.

Sometimes you get the feeling Mitch Marner just wants to be Auston Matthews.

What gives you that feeling?

I'd rather Mitch took $10 mil x 8 on his last deal. But considering hes had more points than matthews 5 out of the 9 seasons they've been in the nhl and has more playoff points, I can't blame him for wanting similar money.

I have no doubts that if matthews didnt take so much money, marner wouldn't either.

Matthews is a big C, has 1 Calder, 3 rockets, 1 Hart, 1 Lindsay, 1 Selke nomination, another Lindsay nomination.

Marner is an overrated tiny winger with no major awards riding the coat tails of an elite generational talent in Matthews.

If Matthews wanted more money, he couldve got it. If he wanted less term, he couldve got it.

Since 2020 Marners p/60 drops from 3.3 to 2.1 without Matthews.

Matthews without Marner stays the same to improves without Marner.

Marner was incredibly overpaid the last 5 years. Cant wait until he is gone. Id be very upset if Matthews left.
