Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Some of us were screaming... SCREAMING... as far back as the COLUMBUS series that the "half the cap on 4 forwards" unprecedented experiment doesn't work in the playoffs. And that of all the core 4, Marner made the most sense to trade.

SCREAMING!!!!

But unfortunately we were screaming into the void. And mocked. And belittled. Called trolls. Called 'fake' fans.

But we were right. We were always right.
When they signed Tavares we assumed they’d move one of Marner or Nylander to get the D they desperately needed. They didn’t. What they proceeded to do was worse than anything, anyone could predict.
I will cut them slack because they hitched their wagon to the number 1 pick and no one, but myself, could have predicted that a showcase player, with all his talent, would turn out like he has.

I didn’t know when they drafted him, but my doubts started creeping in on that prime time Easter Sunday game where he was a no show.

I desperately wanted us to draft Marner that year. Was so excited when he was the pick. Thought he'd go down as one of the most beloved Leafs of all time. Finally a local born and drafted star for the first time in so long. I was in the building for his first goal, was an awesome moment.

Sounds funny now, but as a prospect I really thought he could be a modern day Gilmour. But Mitch is no Killer.

He should've been a lock to end up on Legends Row. Instead he chose to nickel and dime the franchise for his big contract, negotiate through the media and drop hints of signing a Columbus offer sheet. Came up short in every big moment, looked like a scared child shooting the puck over the glass while stars on other teams raised their games. And yeah, there's lots of blame for the likes of Matthews and Nylander too. But Mitch SHOULD have been held to a higher standard. He grew up a Leafs fan, was living the dream of every kid that grew up playing hockey in the GTA. And yet his contract garbage and playoff disappearances in the crucial games were the worst of them all.

At the end of the day, if he wins a Cup at his next stop it will never come close to the impact or feeling as winning it here would, breaking the curse of his hometown team with the biggest fanbase in the league. We need to target players that can embrace the noise, the expectations, the madness because they know the reward of immortality awaits the guys who finally get the job done. It was clear a long time ago that Mitch doesn't fall into that camp, it just sucks wasting time and losing him for nothing rather than having dealt him years ago.

Wish him nothing but the worst going forward professionally. Hope he picks a quiet western market where he can put up empty points for years, comfortably irrelevant aside from his annual visit to Toronto.

The chances of a guy with his cap hit and his performance winning a Cup is pretty low. I think he knows it and has decided to pursue the money for his family. That’s fine and it’s a noble thing to do.

Can you post a single quote where Marner says he wants to re sign in Toronto last summer?
He talked about it right after the season.
Every peice of information from then until today was that he refused to talk extension.
Not true. It was only that he wouldn't sign in-season. A position he has always held. That's why we needed to prioritize re-signing him last offseason.
This isn’t treliving.
It is. It's hilarious how a board that used to tar and feather the GM for breathing is suddenly scrambling to make excuses for a multi-year GM committing one of the worst managerial failures possible - letting one of the best players in the league and franchise history walk for nothing.

Reactions: leafs in five
A couple of my buddies here in town are Sens fans, always talking shit about the Leafs. Apparently some pundit or another was on the radio saying the Sens will take a shot at Marner. 1 in a million kind of nonsense, but Canadian sports journos are going to do their thing.

Anyways, Tom says that if Marner signs here, he'll become a Canes fan.

Players have rights.

CBA is a thing.

Treliving could kept Tkachuk for another year and lost him for nothing.
Tkachuk worked with Treliving and both parties benefitted.

The Calgary Flames have traded star winger Matthew Tkachuk and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2025 to the Florida Panthers in a blockbuster for Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt and a conditional first-round pick in 2025.

Tkachuk wasn't a dick about it.
It is not like he could have left on his own.

Who knew carrying a grudge about schedule A or whatever the f*** bonuses would lead to this.

The subtext to all the Marner mistreatment seems to be he was never quite given the golden child treatment Auston Matthews was. That much seemed apparent by the time Matthews signed his first contract and Dan Ferris jumped on the Internet.

Management is terrible. If you have any players on this team you like, enjoy them now.
This team only has a few years of life left.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but the Tavares signing was the precursor to all these assholes refusing to take a penny less (Matthews included, even with his shorter deal). I was so excited when we signed 91, but as soon as that deal was signed, the other three used it as a measuring stick for their value.

Nylander held out a few months later on his first extension, then came the Marner / Matthews extensions. None of them did anything for the team, and that includes 34. It was all about maximizing dollars, not winning championships. And this FO kept allowing the agents to bend them over, time and time again, and give out NMCs to everyone.

And here we are.

I’m confident we’ll hear why Marner’s feelings were hurt again this time and I’m confident it’ll add up to something trivial.
The reality is, he didn’t earn a contract extension with the Leafs. His performance this year was worse than his performance the year before.

He can make all the excuses he wants, but after 9 years of failure, for some reason they gave him one last audition, and he played the worst hockey he’s played in his career.

Simply put, the core lacks talent.

The apple often doesn’t fall far from the tree, as they say. Paul Marner is clearly a low quality human being, and that rubbed off on Mitch unfortunately. He may have the talent, but the character just isn’t there. So the big disappointment in all of this isn’t that he’s leaving, but rather that we’re not going to get anything for him. Treliving really shit the bed.

We dodged a huge bullet. Thanks Mitch. Now GTFO.
Yup seems official now.

Amid tons of speculation on the future of Mitch Marner, an insider is saying both he and the Toronto Maple Leafs have already decided what's going to happen over the summer.

According to Andy Strickland of the Cam and Strick podcast, the Marner era in Toronto is over. Strickland states he can confirm that Marner won't be back with the Maple Leafs, and both parties are already aware of it.

I think logically most of us new this was going to be the outcome.. Many Marner fans wanted him re-signed before the playoffs began in hopes his regular season would save him... But another playoff flame out was inevitable and when Treliving claimed he wanted to change the DNA we all knew he was referring to Marner who is simply "TOO DAINTY" (referring to things that are physically small and fragile), overly delicate and his fussy behavior no longer fit the hard hitting, elbows up, physical play the Leafs want to emulate.

Leafs no longer want to take the Butter Knife into a Gun Fight come playoff time.

Why would management need to walk on eggshells to sign a player who was so committed to the city and team though? He’s not able to make life decisions between September and May or something? The level of coddling this guy is just insane.

“That would be a goal,” Marner said when he was asked if he wants to stay in Toronto longterm. “I’ve expressed my love for this place, this city. I grew up here. We’ll start thinking about that now and trying to figure something out.” Sounds like every quote he's said when asked if he wants to stay here and never just I want to sign here. We wouldn't overpay for him so they closed down negotiations during the season knowing they were gonna test FA if management didn't give him what he wanted. The lamest excuse a player can give is he wouldn't negotiate in season when he has nothing to do with that and it's his agent. He got what he wanted once and we got nothing in return.

"we're looked upon as gods" oh shit this article again lol... some of the comments are just epic though and couldn't have ended up more right in hindsight...

Leafs will seal their fate if they sign this guy long term again. He plays too small in the playoffs. He's not the type of player you need to beat a Boston or Florida . Get rid of him.

Really... like gods, we're great players... wow, after three lousy points, you think he would be a little more humble after being humbled, takes no responsibility and just comes out with, it's hard to win, yeah it's really hard to win when your a loser. Of course he wants to stay in TO, he gets paid a lot more than he's worth and doesn't have to show up and sacrifice it all to win the playoffs. Time to get rid of this dead weight and put the money towards a player who wants to win at all costs. Time to get rid of the riders...

His first contract was ridiculous for a rookie and he gave the management a hard time during the process....so.........Treliving

will probably be the one playing hard ball this time........would be surprised at an extension.......I think he better see his agent soon

to determine his future with or wthout the leafs.

"Looked upon as gods"??? While playing on a consistently losing team with a dismal future?

Doesn't say much about humility or his sense of reality, does it?

I could never imagine the heroes of my youth (Keon, Salming or Sittler) saying to the media something so grandiose and stupid. Trade this delusional nutter.

Another early playoff exodus and he thinks they're looked upon as gods, not even close Mitch, come back to reality and take your inflated ego elsewhere.

What happens when you’re 27 years old and you’ve been paid $10 million a year since you were 20 and you think that’s normal? It’s called being delusional.

These guys live in a fantasy world where they actually believe that they are worth that kind of money and that they are somehow better than everyone else. Because they’ve been told that probably since they were in their early teens. Unfortunately, there is a huge disconnect and they don’t make the connection between that kind of money and the need to earn it.

They just think they’re entitled to it because that’s what they’ve always been told.

Time for a wake up call and the best way to do that is send him packing.

Marner said they are looked upon as gods, well that bloom may have faded with 7 first round exits in 8 attempts, 1 for 21 on the PP, I believe there are quite a number of us mere mortals who would welcome a change.

and this comment lol
All hail the ingloriousness, and ignominiousness of MiMa the egotistically egocentric egoistic entitled elitist prima donna.

He rooked the charmingly cute bubba neophyte GM Dubas, for he forsook logic whilst forsaking any pecuniary profitable outcome for the Leafs in the yesteryear of 2019. The bafflingly bombastic buffoonish MiMa wants to return at what cost? He is but worthy of $7 million annually at best, henceforth then.

bye Mitch.

If he wanted to stay he’d be signed.
