Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

When you hand out stupid no movement clauses like candy, this is what you get. Stupid stupid contracts. To be fair to both sides, I would do 10 team no trade lists for players that earned it.

Yeah.

Although an alternative reality exists where Mitch Marner just grew up to be a more loyal, team oriented hometown kid who could live comfortably on an 8 figure salary - with more focus on winning with the Leafs and things never got to an acrimonious point: team would never think of trading him and he would never need the protection.

I don't buy the "shop around for the best deal and get back to us" scenario.

With the dearth of talent on the market, Leafs have to have contracts prepared ready to sign on July 1st. for all the best talent out there.

Leafs won't be waiting on marner.
July 1st clock is ticking. You need plan A, B, C ready to go. This isn’t RFA where you can play the game.

Of course teams would consider a shorter term, because he would suck badly from age 32 onwards...if he's bad in the playoffs now, he'd be worse later when he's old...he's probably not signing a 3 to 4 year deal unless he gets $15 million per.

Mitch Marner armed with a cap hit 50% higher than Aleksander Barkov would be a sight to behold in any city he lands in.

Who knew carrying a grudge about schedule A or whatever the f*** bonuses would lead to this.

There won’t be much available that they should consider, but you know Bubbles is going to overpay to plug the hole.
On the bright, that may encourage Matthews to ask for a trade.

Can someone create a poll thread on where we think he goes?

Just checked the updated odds and this is what it shows

Your representation of events is incorrect. The decision needed to be made in 2023, and Presidents do not hire GMs that disagree on the most important decision facing the team. The decision was made, and it was the correct one. Re-signing Marner had to be the top priority last offseason, when Marner was talking about his love for the city and his goal of signing long-term. Instead, there didn't appear to be much urgency from Treliving. There appeared to be assumptions that we could just force Marner into in-season negotiations he didn't want. Treliving then played stupid games during the season; alienating him publicly, and feeding the toxicity machine. Treliving is the GM, and he was in charge of re-signing Marner. He has failed.

Man something has happened to you.
I guess you just ignored the rantanen vs Marner contract in the playoffs.

Can you post a single quote where Marner says he wants to re sign in Toronto last summer? At all?

I don’t remember that at all. He made quotes about being treated like a god in a wishy washy non commital about the future situation. I never saw a single quote saying he wanted to re sign.

Every peice of information from then until today was that he refused to talk extension. Refused to consider any trade and was playing the year out.

No insider has reported that he wanted to sign last summer. Seigel has said he is gone for a year now.

The Marner to Vegas speculation was at last years draft. And seravalli reported he was refusing any trade or extension then.

This isn’t treliving. He was hired after Shanahan said they weren’t moving him. He had no choice.

It was the shanny/dubas section regime. Unsure if dubas wanted to move Mitch. He

It is terrible but I think the reason why most of us are not freaking out is because this was the expected result. He had a NMC and is/was a difficult player to work with contract-wise.

I think as soon as the Dubas/Shannahan rift happened and Brad was brought in with a few weeks to make something happen the writing was on the wall.

It also probably didnt help that his wife was very pregnant. Of all of Marner's schtick, it is hard to fault him for not wanting to upset the apple cart at home in that situation.

The problem is he probably knew for a long time he was not interested in coming back to Toronto hence the refusal to negotiate during the season from the very beginning. If he truly wanted to stay he would have had his agent working with Brad all season to get something done. The reports suggest Brad offered $13-13.5 million with term to Marner. The reports of new teams are $14 million (Anaheim). That doesnt see like very much of a difference to not have to uproot yourself if a person truly wanted to stay.

Curious to see where he ends up. I think it will be for $12 million on a contender or $14 million on a bubble/non playoff team. One thing I am willing to go on record is that he wont be any more effective in either scenario. He cannot possibly put up more points then he put up in Toronto and what team will be able to afford him at $12 million that wont be sacrificing depth to fit him in. They will be the same as the Leafs. Even if he was playing with McKinnon and Makar in Colorado, they would need to gut their depth to fit him in which would result the same problems as Toronto has/had. The only small difference is McKinnon/Makar are more likable/accountable.
I get the feeling he wants to be the highest paid player in the league next year, which would be quite an accomplishment for a player of his caliber. Most of the 20 to 25 players in the league better than him put winning first, but he seems to beat to a different drummer.
