Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

"I had a teams earlier today, say they think Marner would consider takong a shorter term, that doesnt mean he is taking less on an annual salary ans ir depends what tax market were talking about...I think this increases the level of interest from a number of teams".

To interest shoppers you sometimes have to reduce the lease commitment required.
Hmm... but in 2019, he wanted short term then too and didnt want to do 7-8 years that the Leafs wanted (from 2019):

Most greedy player in the league. Cant wait until he is someone elses problem.

The Marleau school of contracts. Just like Matthews. Grab the highest percent of cap short term, grab it again in 4 years. Good for teams that want to sell jerseys and tickets, not good for long term planning something you want to keep winning.
ANd play soft so you dont get hurt and lose out on ALOT of money by taking the short term deals.

Yep... Marleau school for sure. How ever did Marleau manage to break all time games played record and somehow never get injured? Great genes right?

Had his captaincy stripped, never won #$#^....

Yep...

This is fair. But I will remain unconvinced that he and Shanny were unable to have had a frank conversation/decision in May of 2023 about Marner's future. They chose not to and here we are.

I have to push back hard on this point.

Dubas was fired May 19, 2023 over boardroom control and autonomy issues with Shanahan. And Treliving was hired 12 days later on May 31, 2023 by Shanahan, presumably based on some kind ground rules based on ideological compatibility and chain of command…

And Tre is supposed to have enough inside understanding of what kind of problem child Mitch was in the next 30 days to understand what would happen July 1, 2025 if he didn’t deal? With Matthews and Nylander heading to free agency July 1, 2024? He would have the political gumption to turn on the presidents direction within the first 4 weeks on the job without having worked with Marner at all?

I don’t think that’s a reasonable scenario.

Imagine this organization had some balls and just decided to deal him for whatever they could get after the playoffs last season. Then they woulda had money to sign Roy and Montour. Or go a different route. Woulda got at minimum a 1st+ for 1 year of Marner with someone buying low.

Now we got zero assets for him and just got the watch the team fail once again to make it past the half way point in the playoffs.

Organization never wants to make the hard decisions, always just waiting for the decisions to be made for them. Non-serious franchise.

It's all Shanahan.

Essentially.
It's just about selling Jerseys.

His NMC kicked in July 2023. The time to trade this guy was after the Montreal series in 2021.

Or we don’t facilitate a sign and trade and that inflates the cap for the new team and takes $14 million or whatever out of Marner’s pocket on Year 8. Parting gift.
It depends what’s more important. Getting anything back or screwing Marner.

I pity the player. As a fan I don’t need the Leafs to screw him on the way out. If they can recoup a 2nd or 3rd then do it.

I would think of it like not helping another team and their cap sheet.

Like for example. Using some big numbers. $14 million over 8 years is $112 million. If that team has to pay Marner $112 million, that’s $16 million (yay for novelty numbers) on a 7 year deal.

Is helping a team shave $2 million, a de facto retention, worth only a second round pick?

For me, nope. I would choose to not help.

In reality we’re probably talking about <1M though. It’ll be interesting to see where he signs but I’d bet he takes a Rantanen 12x8 in VGK on a sign&trade vs probably 12.5x7 or 13x7.
