Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Basic hockey knowledge alone allows one to easily inform that opinion of the Marner situation.

Marner " Matthews is my only comparable" = Egotistical.

Marner " Lou Lam didn't give me my performance bonus on my ELC". = so he had to made whole in later contract = Whiny spoiled brat.

Marner "We're viewed as Gods around here really". = Arrogance

Remember when Keefe criticized his core players including Mitch and then when confronted by then he changed his tune.,

Sheldon Keefe, head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has been critical of Mitch Marner and other top players, particularly after a loss to the Arizona Coyotes, stating they didn't "play like elite players" and couldn't make a difference in the game. Keefe clarified his comments later, stating he used the wrong words and that he was disappointed in the team's performance as a whole, not just individual players.

Keefe has a mixed history with Marner. It should come as no surprise, he's critical of all his players when it's necessary. Still, back in October 2022, when the season was just getting underway, Keefe benched Marner amid struggles, which left a sour taste in Marner's mouth.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman was on 'Leafs Morning Take' yesterday and was asked about the Marner situation. The conversation led to him discussing how Nylander and Matthews have a 'thick skin' and can handle the market, but how Marner's skin may not be as thick. Friedman emphasized that some people have a thicker skin and some do not but that's how life works.

With that being said, Friedman revealed that Keefe was aware of this and that is why he wasn't as hard on Marner as he was Nylander and others.

"Keefe was hard on Nylander but I think Keefe was very careful when it came to Marner. He felt Marner's sensitivity at times."

etc etc etc,

This is the game Keefe was criticizing

Which star player failed to show up

The media tried to spin this that it was about Marner.

That's why a team like LA hypothetically ticks all the potential Marner boxes - very good team, good age, plenty of cap space, very good players around to play with, experience with winning, and a quieter market.

It's why a team like Florida also makes sense to me too - no idea how they make the money work, but they will likely be one of a number of playoff teams thinking that they can add him, and surround him with a better core than Toronto, and get more out of him than Toronto did.
LA or Anaheim, but I don't see why the Panthers would upset their salary pay scale to accommodate Marner. They obviously don't need him.

It's time for Mitch to leave, but who? UFA examples? The cap is going up, which means contracts will as well. That $12m will be gone before you know it. Marchand? There will be a bidding war. Ehlers? Duchene? Nelson? Boeser?

We don't exactly have a lot of trade capital, so those options will be limited.

Please don't say Bennett. He's not coming here unless it is a ridiculous overpay (as in $10m). If Tre signs him to that, he should be fired the next day.

The previous FO really screwed this up. He should have been dealt a year or two ago. His playoff performances notwithstanding, letting him walk for nothing is almost criminal.
$10 million is alot for Bennett, but i'd rather have Bennett at $10 than Marner at $13 plus, and we still save money.

Can't score, or spin-o-rama give-aways, must be the gloves... :sarcasm:

Apparantly Ana is prepared to offer more than 14 so who knows?
13.5x8
Vs
14 x 7
????

California has high taxes, not much different than Toronto.

Just to match Toronto, Anaheim would need to offer 7x14.4 million.

This doesn't take into account:
- Marner reportedly gets 2 million annually in endorsements deals in Toronto
- Marners Charity in Toronto has grown substantially per records and its a tax write off benefit
- Marners charity also employs his Dad, Mom, Brother and Wife
- Marner gets heavily front loaded Toronto contracts which he can put into savings accounts and make money

... it makes very little sense that Marner doesn't care about that 8th year. He will be 35 years old at the end of 7 years. He could be looking at a minimum contract at that time.

What does make sense is that he doesn't care about the 8th year..because he doesn't want a long term contract.

His rfi deal he held out because he wanted a short term deal like Auston's.

People really think this time around he doesn't want the same short term deal as Auston again?

I'm confident it will come out that its what he is after or was after (why he and Tree didn't agree during the season).

I have flipped. He has to stay. Other than Cowan we have no ability to develop. We have no draft choices, after our last few trades our ability to make trades or signings has to be questioned.
Run it back again. Keep the band together, new tour...let's go baby.
MLSE has the bucks, citizens can pay, bars can over charge...Rogers has the rights, ...yeah...Go Leafs!
There is no way Mitchy can be replaced.

FYI

Matthews has scored 40 or less goals with Marner as his winger in 2 of the last 3 season. :wg:

The only time they have made it out of the first round, they have been together.

They have lost 4 times in the first round when split apart.

Is mess and antro the same person 😂. It's like polkaroo.

Either way, hopefully after July 1st we stop talking about him in here, but somehow the obsessed on either side will keep beating a dead horse lol

No, Mess posts long-winded arguments with no stats and nothing backing it up, Antro posts long-winded arguments with lots of stats that are very specific to his argument, but when presented with more stats disproving it, he changes the subject.

Same motive, different styles.

AI's assessment of why signing him might not be great:

Mitch Marner's Major Criticisms - The Unvarnished Truth

Oh boy, you want the full roast? Here we go:

The Playoff Disappearing Act

This is the big one - Marner has a reputation for going completely invisible when the games matter most. In crucial playoff moments, especially against teams like Boston, he's been criticized for playing scared, making soft plays, and failing to step up when the Leafs need their star players most. The contrast between his regular season dominance and playoff struggles is stark.

The Contract Situation

That $10.9 million AAV is constantly scrutinized. Critics argue he's overpaid for someone who can't deliver in the playoffs. The whole contract negotiation was messy, and many feel he held the team hostage to get paid like a true superstar without proving he can perform like one when it counts.

Soft Play Under Pressure

He gets criticized for being too perimeter-focused and avoiding physical confrontation. When teams get aggressive with him in the playoffs, he's been accused of shrinking rather than fighting through it. The "soft" label follows him constantly.

Turnovers at Crucial Moments

His fancy plays that work in the regular season often become costly turnovers in tight playoff games. Critics say he tries to be too cute instead of making the simple, smart play when the pressure is on.

Leadership Questions

Despite being one of the highest-paid players, there are questions about whether he's actually a leader or just a talented passenger. Some critics argue he doesn't have the killer instinct or mental toughness to be "the guy" for a championship team.
You left in the part where you asked AI to roast Marner. "the full roast". You did not ask AI for an assessment.
