Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

The clause didnt screw the Leafs.

The Leafs entire handling of the situation, screwed the Leafs.

There were still ways around the clause - like not waiting to fire the previous GM until weeks before the clause was set to kick in, or by actually applying some pressure for the clause to moved last summer.

Players are also paid largely based on their regular season performance - and Marner is a 30 goal, 100 point all-situations All Star winger.

He might be capital "U" USELESS in the playoffs, but he's still very valuable to a team trying to get into the playoffs - Buffalo or Detroit for example - or a team that already feels they have a strong core in place and therefore dont need to rely on him as much as the Leafs did - Colorado or Carolina?

Point is, he will have suiters.

It makes sense for this break up to occur. It just reeks of f***ing incompetence by the Leafs that we've ended up here
Agree for the most part, but a team with a strong core in place wouldn't pay him his asking price.

I think there's going to be a massive market for him, with plenty of teams offering him massively lucrative deals.

We understandably are down on him, but I'm sure there's loads of teams that are out there viewing Marner's struggles in Toronto as a "Toronto" thing and not a Marner thing, or at the very least something that they can help fix with less noise in their market.

His NHL Stats are 6'0 180, which is laughable and we all know they boost those numbers

In season form he's more like 5'10-5'11 and 160. Which is why he can't win any battles, and doesn't have the strength to be explosive.

Way too small to be effective in a tight game like the playoffs
Pretty sure training camp heights and weights are accurate and he was listed as 6' 180lbs. 180lbs is incredibly light for a professional hockey player. Marners target should be 200lbs.

Caulfield is just 5'8 and hes 175lbs.

I feel there is enough of a whisper campaign going on this week that indicates Marner isn’t an automatic exit and all this will he leave storyline is feeding the inevitable hometown overpay. End of the day. That promise of 2017 may not be flushed down the toilet just yet.

I don't think he'll get as much as what the rumoured offer by Toronto of $13.5 x 8, considering that Rantanen signed for $12 x 8...only a fool of a GM would pay him Draisaitl money, but I could see the fool being Kyle Dubas because he's so desperate in Pittsburg...though I still doubt it because he would upset the salary structure within the team.

Marner should have linked up with Gary Roberts years ago.

Pittsburgh are about to enter a rebuild, so adding Marner makes no sense to them.

I think there's going to be lucrative offers for Marner - if I'm a betting man, I think it's a slam dunk that he ends up with a higher AAV than Rantanen; I wouldn't personally give it, but someone will. His camp will argue that Mitch being a free agent, and being able to talk to every team, should drive the price up on it's own and turn their guy into a premium candidate worthy of a premium deal.

And they'll get it.

I'm not sure about a rebuild in Pittsburg, it seems like Dubas is insistent on giving Crosby one last run to the playoffs...I'm not sure he has the guts to tear it all down now, considering his recent comment about a Caps resurgence with an old Ovechkin. The problem with any GM overpaying Marner is that every player on the team will want more money...it's going to be fine line to walk for every GM.

I think he would end up with a higher AAV on a wild card or late stage rebuilder with a long shot of winning. But if he’s going to a top 7 contender his AAV will not exceed Rantanen.

This is why Marner is so frustrating. Why do you compare yourself to unflattering comps? Comparison really is the thief of joy.

Is it wrong I want to see Dubas give Marner 14 million?

Dubas wants to rebuild I guarantee it.

FSG wants to sell tickets with the Crosby/Malkin group as long as possible.

Dropping Marner into Pittsburgh would be funny experiment. Yeah you have Crosby’s twilight years but man, when it’s just Dubas and Marner again that’ll be interesting. I could see Dubas throwing money at this from his little revenge angle. He seems like an angry dude like that.

Maybe he wants it now after 3 consecutive years of missing the playoffs with the Pens...but he sure didn't want that when he first joined the Pens...though his comment about a Caps resurgence is kind of conflicting...perhaps the Carolina beating in the second round of an old Ovechkin gets him reconsidering about a rebuild.
