Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Marner has nobody to blame but himself for this current contract situation.

It was his own pure GREED $$ on the last massive over-payment contract that he should have agreed to 8 year term and not just 6. Had he taken full term he would still be under contract to the Leafs for 2 more years beyond this one, with a full NMC and nothing the Leafs could do.

However now after his annual poor playoff performances, and early Leaf exits, while desiring change have given the Leafs organization a glorious golden opportunity to walk away free and clear.

Anyone with eyes can see that Marner is poorly equipped based on size and style of play to be successful in tight checking, hard hitting, physical playoff Cup winning style hockey and becomes one of those "TOO many passengers" that we all just witnessed and keep hearing about as the cause for the end results,

After an unsuccessful trade attempt for Rantanen 1-1 that would have been a grand slam home run for Leafs Nation fans, not only in player upgrade and point production and contribution, but also based on 8 years @$12 mil next contract he just signed.

Any smart GM, based on current player contract ask, should lock the doors, change the locks and shut out the lights until Marner goes away. IMO

We see this all the time in the NFL with QB contracts. It sucks, because if you're on the wrong end of the relative overpay it's a disaster.
"2 Wrongs don't make and Right" and there is nothing written in stone that Treliving needs to double down on the stupidity of the Marner massive over-payment contract handed him by a Clueless green horn GM of the past.

My advice to BT would be not to just walk away but RUN !!!

Dubas gave him the NMC

LOL. Your imaginary trades are funny though
And?

It's been well established now that Dubas was ready to trade him before the NMC kicked in, and that Shanahan blocked deals and ultimately fired Dubas because the core 4 had to stay in place.

Nothing imaginary about it, but cool.

Tbh.

if the first line is Knies - Matthews - Domi, I don't feel its a huge downgrade.
Domi had 4 goals to Marners 2 in playoffs. 1 gwg OT, 1 in game 7 vs Fla to male it 3-1 and he assisted on the game 6 gwg vs Ottawa and assisted on the game 6 2-0 goal vs Fla kn game 6.

I believe he also has more primary assists per 60 than Marner over last 2 seasons.

The fact that marner apparently wants to see what's out there for free agency. Indicates to me that he likely wants a short-term contract like Matthews. So he can continue to maximize on cap rises because otherwise it would make little sense for a player. To take the risk of losing that eighth year and potentially being out of the league win the contract is up at thirty six years old and losing that final 13 million or so on year 8.

Good. He can go to Utah, they'll love him there

Was it well established, or was it Dubas saying "everything is being considered" again?

So long Marner. If you really loved it and wanted to stay you’d already have a contract. But you want to test free agency and see what is out there?
The American didn’t test the market.
The Swedish nationality player didn’t test the market.
But the Canadian who loves Toronto wants to see how much he can get to throw it back at management to beat it?
Bye.

Risky move for him, who does Utah have that will pump his stats for a huge contract in 3 years?

I think he is holding out hope that Toronto gives in to his demands of course. He says he loves Toronto, that he thinks this core can do it, that he needs to talk to his wife.... so he is keeping Toronto close. It seems he is pulling a Dubas, where he has a number that gets him what he wants.

But that is my .02 cents

I am worried Carolina loses in 4-5 and it males ownership think..hey if Matthews were healthy...maybe we should run it back.

I feel that that was exactly the play all along. He wanted to stay, and to stay for $14M+.

Each progressive round that the Leafs advanced, the greater the likelihood of him being offered that before July 1st. Barring an offer, he would have walked to UFA to get other offers and then go back to the Leafs to negotiate the best possible outcome.

Losing in 7 to Florida reduces the chances of the above. Your bolded text above increases those chances, as does any rumoured personnel changes, as does the Leafs grovelling at Marner's feet to convince him to re-sign.

I would personally do $12M X 8 and go up to $13M if there was any sensible form of a partial NTC/NMC. Happy for the NTC/NMC to be 5 or 10 team, and progressive or regressive during the length of the contract. Marner would never agree to it, but if he did, I would happily sign him and spend the summer crafting the perfect narrative to the fans and media while concocting various Plan Bs and Cs to deal him next offseason if the team underperforms again and/or there's any wind of McDavid being interested in the Leafs.

I would not could not do 12 mil
Not on a train, not on a plane.
I would not go for more than 11.
Not for a player who won't play game 7.

No hes not. Here is Marner compared to the rest of playoff players. The closer to the center is bottom 50 percentile. It really is no wonder Marnsr struggles mightoly in playoff hockey. He doesnt have the skills to succeed.

He’s a fancy skater with great edge work and lateral mobility but I find it’s under powered and sloppy. Balance is not great since he can’t use his footwork to win battles. Escapability is not great. Explosiveness is non existent.

Was my fav player for the longest time. If the amt is right sign him. And make sure to sign knies long term he is the key.

Shanny needs to go, he messed up many a things

Dubas was sufficiently vague as to position himself as an anti-Shanahan and nothing more.

Very poor mechanics, very hunched over skater..where his head is ahead of his legs and he is almost looking down at the ice and agreed underpowered.

Patches was asked early in the season about his work with Tavares trainer on his skating and he said that the new training is short strides and he said similar to Nylander who he called an elite skater. He said trainers used to teach long powerful strides when he was younger... which is now the short strides with legs kept under the core more (or something like that).

He’s got a Gretzky like shuffle (not a compliment or a comparison of players) with regards to stride and happy feet, unnecessarily so. But he has no power or balance to accelerate, escape with speed or be able to engage in a physical contest and stay on his feet really.

I was really dissapointed that we didn't try this line during the season - seemed like an obvious fit. Could have played Marner on the 2nd line as that line was a bit of a disaster defensively.
