Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Everyone was kinda asked the question about about the pressure in Toronto to succeed and the "outside noise".

Patches basically sticks it to Marner and any Leaf who complains about it.

" Anyone can say whatever they want, you can use it to you advantage or use it against someone... but I guess im a glass half full guy."

"I love it (the pressure), its a priviledge to play under pressure, you probably dont realize it when your in it or when your younger but its a priviledge to have this people care about how we do... it helps develop winners and turns you into men."

I bet he's deciding with his wife whether or not they want their kid to grow up in this market. With all the heat he takes that'd be a major factor for me. However, it's not something that matters until school age and being near family during the transition to parenthood is a huge help. If I were him I'd want a 3 year deal with Toronto. And if I were Toronto I wouldn't offer him a raise.

So true, he has been car jacked previously so he may feel better in one of the few markets that can afford him. The sister city of Toronto, Chicago the good.

Lol @ the people who said he's "Elite" defensively

Dude had so many defensive gaffs in the playoffs. Bad pinches on Powerplays that led to chances/1 goal. Literally makes our powerplay look so shit i'd rather be 5v5
The famous spinorama where he didn't know how to cover his own man

Elite defence my ass.

Dude is overrated AF because he was drafted by Toronto.

Guarentee you whichever team he goes to, he will perform like shit. His best days are behind him
Was watching the game in 30 minutes and he was also elite along with Rielly on the Jones goal that was incorrectly waived off.

Marner doesn't complain about it. he said "There's pressure everywhere. It doesn't matter where you are—there's always pressure. But we put the most pressure on ourselves. We hold ourselves to such a high level of accountability.
You want to win every single year, and it’d be lovely if you could—but it's hard to do. Like I said, we hold ourselves to such high accountability that the pressure from the outside doesn’t really bother you too much. It’s more about the pressure you put on yourself, because that’s what you can control."

So obviously they were calling out someone who complains about pressure.

I have a feeling we may not get the fresh slate.

Think about this team. You always get a shitty result you didn’t want.
If Mikko Rantanen had not re-signed after his trade to Dallas, then I bet BT would have pursued him as a UFA strongly considering he tried to trade from him.

Treliving is a smart guy because that is what I posted he should do with the Marner Cap space and money instead months ago before any potential trade even existed. :wg:

Now re-signing Marner might come down to a game of chicken with Marner testing free agency and if Leafs can't find an alternate replacement(s) for the re-captured space may in fact circle around and back putting a Leafs offer back on the table. I can see Marner camp offering Leafs an opportunity to match his best UFA offer.

If they hold themselves to such high accountability why were fingers being pointed at others by matthews.

Matthews quote on the team having too many passengers after a disappointing game 7 loss was putting pressure onto others rather then himself/the core guys.

I think marner also agreed with the take and doubled down in support with matthews.

If your not going to accept you llayed poorly and let the team down, don't pass of loss to others.

It was a bad take by matthews who is supposed to be a leader for this team. Leaders build others up, not point fingers and throw blame off to others

Marner has been bi$#$ing about the pressure for years....the meanies on social media, how he stays off it, him not caring what people think, and how people think they need to score 10 points every night, to saying he loves going home to his dog because his dog doesnt know anything about what I do... etc etc. It was probably haplening every loss for a couple years now and certainly extends further back.

.... if you actually believe he hasnt been the leader of the complain committee then I've got some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you

He didnt complain on pressure but made his take on accountability irrelevant. Which was part of your quote.

If they meant that than its really scummy and a testament to their characters. If they said it due to feeling pressure internally than they need to avoid commenting at all when the emotions are high after a humiliating loss.

Why do you think they both passed off the blame to others in the team?

It was Marner at the locker clear out. He said that they hold themselves to a high accountability. It is according him, any pressure form the outside that is irrelevant.

I think this is going to be a game of brinksmanship and reworking the relationship to suit Marner.

Draft is going to roll by, the free agent options will look paltry and after the dust has settled on the season, maybe the Panthers run roughshod on the playoffs, suddenly the Leafs finish doesn’t look so bad.

Marner swings around, says he’s willing to listen and MLSE opens up the vaults on an overpay. You bet on talent and everything staying exactly the same. All of a sudden it looks like Marner is choosing Toronto. Thanks Darren Ferris.

These 5 guys do not work together. We do not need more proof and most fans are tired of the same rerun.

Best case scenario, Marner 'grass-is-greeners' himself this summer and the Leafs win the cup next year. That'd be just so poetic.

Where was this accountability?

He said something contradictory to his earlier statements from after game 7.

Marner let his true thoughts out after game 7 in an uncontrolled environment.

In locker room clean out he had a few days to compose and say cliche answers.

Agreeing with matthews that the team had too many passengers after the game 7 blowout.

Tanev said he needed to be better and took ownership and accountability over himself.

Didn't push the loss to the rest of the team
What were his words?
BTW they did. Marner and Mathews were among them.

@Leaf Fans

Matthews - "I thought the first 10 minutes, they came out strong. The next 10 minutes, we controlled play," Matthews said, "and then I just thought we had too many passengers throughout the rest of the game."

Marner - "Yeah, I mean, that's the right wording I'd say as well," added Marner. "Can't have passengers in a Game 7, so yeah, it just sucks. We all got to hold ourselves to a higher accountability, and we all need to be better.

There was nothing to do with the other players on the team. It was Matthews and Marner, if they had been accountable they'd accept they needed to be better and fix on their shortcomings (horrible defensive gaffes throughout the series)

Contrast to Tanev -

I'll take responsibility. I need to be better."

Obviously, as did MaxPac and Woll.
Yes, after game 7 Marner said: Devestating “I mean, I’m feeling the same way. It’s sad. It’s heartbreaking,” Marner said, after hugging some staff and teammates behind closed doors. “We're not happy with that outcome either.”
as for agreeing with Matthews he said"
Yeah, I mean, that’s the right wording, I’d say. You can’t have passengers in a Game 7. It just sucks. We all have to hold ourselves to a higher level of accountability, and we all need to be better."
