Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

I feel like I've been watching this outcome in slow motion for 6 years. Even before he signed I knew this departure was inevitable. You can't rake a team this badly on a contract as an RFA, be Casper the friendly ghost in every game 7, then seek a big raise.

He will be slower if he bulks up and he won't be as nimble or elusive. He doesn't have a build to change and most importantly he is too old to make that shift.
I agree, at 28 its doubtful he will suddenly drop the controller and decide he wants to take fitness seriously.

Also... with a new baby and his family being far far away and unable to help ;) he will have even less time to train than he had before.

Leafs should bow out. No contest. The end
The geniuses at MLSEL dodged a bullet when Marner refused to sign. Seriously how dumb do you have to be to offer this loser $13.5mx8 during the regular season after having seen him wet his pants in the playoffs for the last 6 years?

1. Overpay Matthews
2. Cave and overpay Willie
3. Offer to overpay Marner

Total brilliance. Here we are waiting for Mr. "We are not here to sell jerseys" to face the music.

It would have been bad but it would have allowed the Leafs to trade him. I am sure he would gladly waive his NMC rather than facing the summer heat.
I’d rather not take that chance. The window was 2 years ago to move one of Marner/Nylander and get some different guys in here that could actually be top 6. Instead nothing and we recycle to bottom with whoever plays for league minimum.

Luckily, he was to stupid and greedy to take the offer. Good luck finding $108m elsewhere.

Lol @ the people who said he's "Elite" defensively

Dude had so many defensive gaffs in the playoffs. Bad pinches on Powerplays that led to chances/1 goal. Literally makes our powerplay look so shit i'd rather be 5v5
The famous spinorama where he didn't know how to cover his own man

Elite defence my ass.

Dude is overrated AF because he was drafted by Toronto.

Guarentee you whichever team he goes to, he will perform like shit. His best days are behind him

I see Bryan Hayes is seeing what I’m seeing. Marner could come back.
I didn't watch overdrive (heard about 10 minutes on the radio), what did he say?

Having digested it all for a bit, I think he could come back too. It's his hometown so playing here is a dream come true, you know the Leafs pay well so he's not going to be underpaid, he gets couple million more in endorsements, the only reason for him to even consider leaving is if he's just that big a wuss that he simply can not handle the pressure. But leave with his tail between his legs and that'll forever be his legacy. And all needs to turn the narrative around is just one spring where he plays like a champion, not just for the first 4 playoff games but sustains it through multiple rounds. So much motivation to stay, it simply off the charts. And if we ever go deep, then his endorsement income is locked in for the next 50+ years. I still see Leafs in commercials that played here 50 years ago that got no further than the final 4, can you imagine how much money and glory is in it for him if we even make the finals just once?

So IMHO, that's what it comes down to - is he the biggest wuss in Maple Leaf History or isn't he? That's assuming the Leafs would have him back and it sure sounds like that is indeed the case. Stay tuned.

Well here’s the thing.

Marner’s seadon is ticking down to games, periods and minutes. And yet his utilization stays the same with Auston Matthews, no thought of changes from the coaching staff. If he’s not being utilized to keep him happy, it’s to keep Auston happy.

Now you think about that level of accommodation. Why would it end? Dust is going to settle. Team is going to creep towards free agency. They’re going to realize the best business case is Marner coming back (reluctantly) and he’s going to make $13.5 million or more over 8 years and let’s kick the problem down the road and see if Berube can’t crack this nut.

You always bet on talent. Famous last words.
