Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

For sure teams will be lining up.. We should not be one of them.
why shouldn't we sign him

-he's in his prime
-puts up 90pts plus
-very good defensively
-great play driver

the guy we need to walk from is Tavares , the guys been a loser and an anchor for his entire career , he's crippled this team the last 7 yrs

Mitch Marner constantly paints himself as a victim. He wants people to feel sorry for him, the poor "local kid the Leafs took a chance on” at the draft, as he phrased it before (or after) Game 7. That wasn’t a message of accountability or leadership, it was just another Mitch Marner plea for sympathy, plea to feel sorry for me.

Marner wants the story to be about how much he cares, how much he hurts, how unfair it all is for him. He is this tragic figure you’re supposed to feel bad for.

He repeatedly talks about going home to his dog or his kid (now) not just as a personal comfort, but as a shield from criticism. It’s his escape from what he frames as unfair treatment from fans and media. He regularly lashes out at the press and social media for being “too harsh,” trying to reframe any valid critique as abuse.

He is the good cop in his contract talks, Ferris the bad cop he trusts and who makes the decisions, not him. After he signed his enormous contract, he tells the media he told Ferris he didn’t even want to look at the offer sheets. Toronto was where he wanted to be. He was the one who bypassed Ferris and picked up the phone and told Dubas, “Let’s make a deal,” because he’s the good Toronto boy who didn’t want to miss training camp. If wasnt because he found out the offer sheets were for less than the Leafs offer (of course).

I dont feel sorry for Marner, not even a little bit. I cant wait until Marner and his victim complex is off this team.

This guy comes completely undone in the big moments. Last night was the prime example.

He's a tremendous penalty killer. We can find that elsewhere.

JT can go too. Matthews can go too. Rielly can go too. We've tried it and this team cannot do it.

I teach in Scarborough at a model school. I promise you they are not calling each other snowflakes LOL. They are calling each other a lot of different things but snowflake is not one of them. I also teach grade 5/6 right now. I don’t teach high school.
God bless you brother.

Years ago I was a teacher at both the high school and collegiate levels. The latter was fun, the former literally made me want to kill myself. Never again.

Somewhere in your research you've stumbled upon it not being used in black spaces?

Because it is. Just an FYI. But okie dokie smokie. I said it was all good. I was just putting my two cents in. Thought it was weird you didn't know the word is all. Who cares tho really? Lol.

Have a wonderful day random internet stranger.

I hope you’re not taking it as me accusing you of anything. Or taking it personal. Was just giving context behind why I don’t really know the term. That’s all. As you said who cares. Well seeing as a lot of people know it and I don’t I probably need to start keeping up with shit a little more 🤣.

the entire team got hammered last night and your right this team can't do it but that doesn't mean it still won't if we let Mumbles walk and replace him with a competent 2nd line C who can do more than just hang around the crease and disappear every playoffs

and far as coming undone in big moments goes , he looked fine in game 6 causing the turnover and feeding Mathews on the game winner

this is a funny fan base , the majority seems to to want jettison Mitch into Lake Ontario but then there's still many who want to keep JT even though he completely shit himself every playoffs

Only William scored more and that was just one more. JT did alright.

3 points in the last 11 games is doing ''alright" ? and points aside he looked like crap always being behind the play and on his ass after every puck battle

do some in this fan base get paid to defend mumbles and if so can you cut me in on it ?

5 goals is better than 2 for the entire playoffs, The same number as Mathew’s and Marner combined, not great but alright.

Bang on and I mean bang on. This is exactly his character. He and his wife were probably trying for a kid to come during or around the playoffs (contract year choreographing lol) for even more awwww shucks contract sympathy.

His mastermind narrative creation efforts were thwarted by life!

What does that possible trade mean to you then? You don't see value in it?
Pointless question. Why don't you tell us, what makes you think Marner is as valuable to Rantanen? Can you think for yourself and come up with anything on your own or is the fact that Carolina was apparently interested in him all you got?

I mainly spend time in the Marner thread, prospects thread and GDT. And even then i don’t read every post, usually ones that I get tagged in or the ones with lots of reactions. I don’t get why it’s a big deal that I don’t know this term LOL
I didn't say it was a big deal, what I said was that I don't believe you, and I also explained why that is.

LOL I was thinking the exact same thing. Weird.
He ended his own dream with pure greed. I feel zero sympathy for someone like that. He made this bed. Enjoy the money Mitch.
Yup.

I have a friend who teaches high school who loves it. Mind you the experience varies massively from one school to another so yeah, too bad your experience wasn't as good. I have another female friend who taught high school in urban New York City for a while in the 80s, not that is a whole other level of challenging as you can probably imagine.

-was 7 points in 13 games and 3 pts in his last 11 games good enough as well ?
-is being tied with 3 other players for 5th in scoring good enough as well ?
-how about leading the team with a -6 , i guess that's good enough as well ?

how about we cut to the chase and you give me half what your getting paid to spin positives and i'll jump on board !

Tavares being a lead-footed empty shell doesn't excuse Marner, Matthews or Nylander for their abysmal performances.

The first time I saw Mitch Marner play live was May of 2014, right after his 17th birthday. It was a playoff game between the Knights and my hometown Guelph Storm, and although the knights lost that series, 93 on London played a smart, creative, care-free brand of hockey couldn’t take my eyes off of.

The next year, I followed his progression closely, and watched him put up 2 points per game in the OHL - when the Leafs started tanking, I had my eyes all over him as an incredible consolation prize, if we couldn’t land McDavid

When we drafted him, I was ecstatic - I saw an unbelievably skilled player, and a hometown kid, who I knew the city would fall in love with the same way I had throughout his junior career. And boy, for those first three seasons, it was a sight to behold. Not only did he quickly become one of the best young superstars in the league, he showed a passion and a big-game prowess (especially vs Boston in 2018) that endeared himself to the fan base the way we haven’t seen in a long time. A local kid, repping his hometown team, showing up on the biggest stage.

I won’t get into the contract, or the negotiation, but it can’t be understated how big of an inflection point that was. It fundamentally changed him as a player. Early in his pro career (as well as in junior), I was convinced his combination of determination, competitiveness, and poise suggested he would thrive in big games. As his perception shifted in the city, you could just see how it wore on him. On and off the ice, the once care-free approach that embraced the spotlight transformed into a guy who got more frustrated, more helpless, more afraid, the bigger the stage. It felt like the swagger I saw from that 17 year old kid in London just evaporated before my eyes - and every spring since, it’s been the same story.

Until last night, there was always a possibility that things would change, that one big game or one big moment could rewrite the script altogether. After yet another Game 7 loss, and Marner almost certainly signing elsewhere, that possibility has gone up in smoke.
I have no interest in eviscerating him right now, or laying all the blame for yet another playoff exit at his feet. But I do want to acknowledge just how devastating it is that this chapter played out the way it did. All the pieces were in place for this guy to be a timeless legend in the city, that we would tell our grandparents about someday. Instead, he’ll be remembered as the guy who demanded every penny from a cap-strapped team, and proceeded to disappear in big moments. I couldn’t have possibly imagined things going like this on draft day in 2015. And I doubt he could either.

At the end of the day, he’s a new father, seems like a genuinely good person, and I’m sure he’ll have a ton of success elsewhere. But what a shame that things worked out like this. Mitch, I loved you dude. Maybe there’s an alternate reality where you led this team to a cup. But damn, I’m just so sad that this is where we ended up. What could have been…
Great post! You told the Marner story quite accurately IMO and you're right - nobody could have imagined things turn out the way they did. I can't think of another player like this in my 50+ years of following pro sports - the bigger the moment, the smaller he gets.

Matthews had to babysit Marner. Nylander had top comp with lead feet on his line. It was so bad he didn't have time and space to do much of anything after Maurice changed tactics.

I am really worried about you guys with the Matthews and Willy hate. I feel like you need walked off the ledge.

Dont jump Matthews and Nylander fans!! Do do it! Sometimes there is addition by subtraction!

None of these Pejorative Slurs should require babysitting at this point and Matthews is a cancer to boot.

EDIT: the profanity filter loves me

Since you offered I’ll respect you as a man of your word. I swear I’m getting nothing and I’m giving you half.

He only signed his last deal because it was leaked that he turned down a $10 x 7 year deal offered by the Leafs, and that got the media and fans upset. The surprising thing after that is dumb Dubas gave him an extra million and lessen the term by a year.

Well Marner said he called Dubas personally to hash out a deal.... so Dubas was even out-negotiated by 22 year old Marner!

I really wondered what Marner said to Dubas to convince him...must be something like:

Marner: I really love Dougie...he's killer...reminds me of myself...how about $10.93...pretty, pretty, puulease?

Dubas: Hmm...how about I also knock off a year in the term, so you could go for $13.93 sooner on your next contract?

All his PR moves...

.... i told Ferris i didnt even eant to look at the offersheets, I wanted to be in Toronto.

.... I called Dubas to make a deal because it was important that I dont miss training camp.

.... I put .893 in my contract because I want everyont to asscoiate me with beloved Leaf of the past.

.... Me and Auston...me and Auston me and Auston, because I want to be grouped with the best player on this team like se are thr Sedins.

... I tried to pass to Auston all night (speaking about Austons 60th goal)...because I want to be associated with all Matthews achievements.

.... They took maybe a risky pick on a small kid from Toronto"...because I want to remind everyone that im a good ol toronto boy at heart.

Etc etc etc... shut up and dont let the door hit you on your way out.

I’ll just be frank to give context, I’m a black man, who hangs out with other black people. Who teaches in a primarily black area. Truthfully I have never seen the term used, it’s not something that’s used in black spaces.

Then it is on you for being so insular. Try exposing yourself to the wider world, and not just black spaces. S**t, all you need to do to hear it is turn on the damned TV.

The term has been around long enough and has become so common that it has basically jumped the shark (do you get that reference?) and people who use it are often looked down upon the same as those who use the term 'boomer' (do you know that one?).

Should be able to get a 2nd or third for his rights. Hes gonna want that 8th year so we could get the 3 or 4 teams he’s willing to sign with bidding for his rights. That would give us 3 picks in the 2nd/3rd round of this draft to play with and a ton of cap space.
