Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Not a Dubas truther but I can't help think back to when Dubas was in his last days basically saying he was gonna trade Mitch in the off-season. Then he was gone and Tree was brought in and took a 'wait and see' approach.
He didn't basically said anything, he eluded to possible changes but was basically consumed with his own agenda. It's a myth he was going to do anything, but I'll concede he did say it was in the table.

Reactions: leafs in five

CJ flat out says there's 'zero reason' to believe he will sign an extension 'on or before July 1'.

McKenzie, even from retirement, said it was unlikely he signed before July 1st as well.

Johnston has said after every frustrating playoff loss over the years that the Leafs would make big changes to the roster. It never happens. This time it seems likely though, but mostly just because they are gonna walk, not from a trade.

But it happened, in a critical moment, and fit the perception of what he is in moments like those. He was so passive... I don't know if it was out of character to be honest.
I don't think he was being passive, I think he was thinking of his mistake instead of getting on with it and picking up his check.
We seen him lots of times in that situation not be passive.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I've read "you can't let talent like that walk". I can't help but wonder what all those people are thinking today?
A lot of teams can’t let a player like that walk for nothing. But for a team like TOR or NYR, who have no problem attracting talent, the cap space is enough of a “return.”

I caught that as well. Likely giving him a bit of cover if things change.

I mean if a miracle happens, the team rallies wins the next two games and goes on to Eastern finals, an extension potentially comes back into play.

With the rising cap, so many teams will have ample space to overpay this summer. It's going to be quite tricky to get good value for his cap room. This isn't a good situation, to be honest. We don't win here imo, without a trade, the cap space isn't making up for him as easily as some here think.

IMHO any team that hopes to go deep in the playoffs would be better off letting him walk for nothing then spending a huge chunk of cap space on his disappearing act.

100 point player for 86 games, then his production drops to 3rd line winger level (40-45 points). That's worth a lot during the regular season, but when you're paying that much for Domi level production after the first 4 games of the playoffs, that's a lot to overcome when playing against real contenders.

Call it what you want, in a critical moment he was not doing what the team needed him to do.

That is not uncommon.

The point has never been that moving on from Marner is some sort of big win, the point is that sticking with him seems to be almost guaranteeing losing. Hard to understand that you still don't get this.

I think the only teams that will want Marner are late stage rebuilders, bubble playoff teams and wild card teams. So probably your 15th-25th place teams.

I was kind of putting that part aside, to take the player evaluation part out of it. Even if he had a point per game in the playoffs, the point would still hold true.

But yeah, at this point it’s addition by subtraction…at least for this team. Let’s move on!

I'm not so sure with this cap rising. I'm more interested in what we can bring in, because people are going to get way over paid this summer, the likes of which we haven't seen in years. I can't see Bennett coming here, Ehlers is nothing when it matters either, so?

It will not surprise me a bit if that were to happen or that it cannot happen. This team has the capability, but, not the will

I am definitely not betting on it

You fanboys keep worrying about how to "replace" him. Who cares bud? How hard is it to replace someone who gives you nothing when you need it the most?

Betting against it seems like a decent play - Florida at -780 to win the series seems like a good bet at this point.

Then you dont' bring anyone in. Maybe sign bunch of one years to buy some time until trade deadline or next year's free agency

Maybe look for a potential trade or grow within.

I rather go after Matt Duchene than John Tavares. At least Duchene can skate
He's having a sub par playoffs but not lacking contribution other areas. He's hardly behind any plays. John on the other hand is just too slow

If we can trade Auston we can get a good piece in return.

We shouldn't be afraid to pull the trigger just because there are no players or options right now. When you have cap space, you can play around a lot of options

If we need catastrophic turnovers in a pinch I’m sure we can bring Dermott and Galchenyuk back at team friendly cap hits.
And that guy who would stake around the boards in the O-zone without ever going to the centre of the ice. The name escapes me ATM but I'm sure some people know who I'm talking about.

We can also take a cap hit or two to facilitate someone wanting to sign Mitch. Or another UFA. Have to be quite creative with the extra cap space but having space is never a bad thing.

For example would Vegas go crazy and want to add Marner? Would we take something off them and will it be useful for us? You never know.

I don't think this fan base would accept sitting on cap space.
