Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

We are finally almost at the end. Soon Mitch will thankfully be gone for good. 5 years too late and it should have been a trade instead of him walking for nothing in FA, but at least the end is finally within sight.

It finally seems like there are no more excuses.

His final, lasting memory will likely be an unforced 360 spinning backhand pass up the middle to end our playoff run.

I've said it for some time, he's not a smart player, but he is creative

I called this a while back. I said he would cost us a goal in the playoffs with one of his stupid backhand passes.

This was worse than usual though. A pathetic spin and backhand right to the other team and worse his pathetic defense afterwards

What in the world is he thinking here ?

Funny thing is that if Matthews takes that pass and goes in to score, we have dozens of posts here about Marner's super crazy elite "vision", and how there's maybe only 3 people in the world who can make that pass.:laugh:

That Marner blind give-away up the middle pass that resulted in a turnover and 3-0 Florida lead, was the nail in the coffin in game #5, and perhaps now the last time anyone sees Marner in a Leafs jersey at home ice again EVER !!

Marner in particular, it was a tough showing, especially considering all the outside noise surrounding his contract situation. His performance was capped off by his ill advised spin-around back-hand pass from his own zone that was intercepted by the Panthers and subsequently led to a back-breaking goal.

That was certainly not the play to make down 2-0 with half the game remaining and with the camera panning to GM Brad Treliving shortly after for his reaction, as you could see the frustration in his face as well.

On a night where they play their worst game when they needed to change the narrative, and are now on the brink of elimination, Kappy scored the lone goal in OT to push the Oil to the WCF.

Meanwhile Mitch showing that a leopard cannot change it's spots. Started out well and slowly disappeared and morphed into the chicken shit player he has been in game 5-7.

On a legacy cementing night for Marner - on what should be his last game on home ice as a Leaf - this play will come to perfectly define his time with the organization.

The giveaway. The arrogance. The lack of awareness. The lack of effort on the backcheck. The thousand yard stare. It literally has everything. The perfect crescendo for this specialist in failure.

When I think about Marner in the future, this play will be the one that I remember him by.

The icing on the cake of a truly pathetic era of Leafs hockey.

I can't believe he did it in another important game like this one was AGAIN.

Keep sticking the finger in the light socket type mentality.

It's game 5 of round 2 of the playoffs, against the cup champs.

It's year 9.

Those plays don't work at this time of year. They never have. Makes you wonder why he hasn't learned that by now.
I agree.

I think it’s desperation.

But look at the reaction after the fact. Matthews doesn’t put the brakes on mindful of his surroundings. There’s nothing vigilant about him in the least.

Marner’s decision making vs effort in that instance isn’t an excuse but if Matthews were my captain and nothing seemed to activate him, I can see - in the moment - thinking I didn’t have an extra half-second to make the play.

I haven’t been complementing Marner this series and I see where’s things are headed.

Matthews just seems so egregiously worse that in every instance I think distinctions need to be made.

You do not attempt to make a pass like that when you have not been able to get simple offence going. It is inexcusable, Your team is down 2-0, started the second alot better then entire first. Hit 2 posts in opening 3 min, and you go make an attempted pass like that.

Yes you can see he was gutted. But it also gutted the entire team. Listen, I will be the first to say Matthews play hasn't been good at all as well. But don't pin that play on him. It was all Marner.

Shit look at the PP unit, its failed because of his poor decisions. It runs through him. How many giveaways are going to be enough for this guy.

It is like he is mailing it in. Doing things on purpose.

Crazy stupid.
I don’t disagree in general.

I think he'll have success wherever he goes because he will not have to be a leader in the room and can just go out and play.

He is a good player.

That play last night screams of frustration and panic. Rather than make the safe play and try again next shift, he abandoned everything Berube has been preaching about all season.

If you are unwilling, or cannot stick to the gameplan in the most critical of moments you are playing a fools game...

the backcheck was worse than the pass. god damn
Imagine making the turnover... that is a mistake, it happens, but then to not be willing to put it all on the line on the backcheck to prevent the goal was the more telling moment.

Imagine you are a guy on that bench watching one of your leaders do that. And anyone wonders why the team checked out at that moment... gtfoh

In fairness, that backcheck was out of character for him. Terrible none the less.

Still wrapping my head around the fact that Friday may actually be Marner's last in a Leafs uniform.

Any chance his loser PR crew can leave with him via UFA?

Nah they'll be back when Marner washes out as a player somewhere else.

I'm predicting Jonathan Huberdeau type follow up for Mitch.

Funnily enough they're around the same age when traded/signed new deal.
