Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

Yeah I'm a hater. I absolutely hate losing like this every single year. Please put me out of my misery and hold 1 of these 4 guys accountable.
If we hold Nylander accountable, I believe he should be commended in some way.

The other three? Sure.

On a legacy cementing night for Marner - on what should be his last game on home ice as a Leaf - this play will come to perfectly define his time with the organization.

The giveaway. The arrogance. The lack of awareness. The lack of effort on the backcheck. The thousand yard stare. It literally has everything. The perfect crescendo for this specialist in failure.

When I think about Marner in the future, this play will be the one that I remember him by.

The icing on the cake of a truly pathetic era of Leafs hockey.

It is sad to say, but unless the Leafs do the improbable and come back to beat Florida. Marner is done as a Leaf. He cemented this by his pizza giveaway on the third goal. In his time in Toronto, he has never attempted a pass as such, and been responsible with the puck. He must go.

I wanted him gone last season after the Boston playoff loss. I wish they would have traded him then. But this is on Shanny and Trev for not doing so. Now he walks for nothing, and someone will sign him for what he wants.

He's done as a Leaf.

I said months ago I thought he was finished - but the moment he got home and opened up his Twitter burner account last night, he will have come to the conclusion that not only is he no longer wanted here, but surely at this point, he doesn't want to put up with this anymore.

The pressure. The criticism. The heat. You can see it on his face - he's so uncomfortable around it, and awaiting him is the opportunity to earn generational wealth while playing in an obscure market where many people won't have a clue who you are?

He's gone.

Shanahan should be out the pucking door with Marner. Both need gone together. We all know Shanahan blocked the trades prior to his NMC kicking in. We know it even if we don't have facts. It's obvious

The theme for the team coming into this playoff, and Marner in particular as a UFA was legacy.

In a city desperate for anyone to cheer for and any type of success. The legacy of losing and failure to deliver in the big moments over and over could/would be forgotten with one playoff run, even one statement game might have been enough.

After another expectedly inconsequential 22 minutes in game 4, game 5 was another chance to rewrite the narrative, and somehow he managed to do it. No longer just incapable of making the big play to win you a game, now he's losing you games.

Leafs fans can take some solace in the fact he's a UFA. But I don't know if we should, I fully expect Tre to try and sign him. If he leaves it will probably be because he wanted out, not because we (Tre and Co) didn't want him back.

I don’t know about Marner’s pass. He’s made passes like that before. You can see his reaction after the fact that he’s gutted.

He looked and made the pass and Matthews kind of blindly whiffed at it doing nothing to to really react to the situation.

You do not attempt to make a pass like that when you have not been able to get simple offence going. It is inexcusable, Your team is down 2-0, started the second alot better then entire first. Hit 2 posts in opening 3 min, and you go make an attempted pass like that.

Yes you can see he was gutted. But it also gutted the entire team. Listen, I will be the first to say Matthews play hasn't been good at all as well. But don't pin that play on him. It was all Marner.

Shit look at the PP unit, its failed because of his poor decisions. It runs through him. How many giveaways are going to be enough for this guy.

It is like he is mailing it in. Doing things on purpose.

Crazy stupid.

Last night summed up this era of leafs,

Matthews gets beat and makes a soft ass play up the boards on goal 1.

Marner backhand from the blue line into traffic on goal 3. I actually couldn’t believe that tbh

If your best two guys make plays that don’t help you win but hurt you, it’s curtains.

I think that’s curtains on Marner, you have to think both sides will walk away. Hopefully the leafs can build a balanced team. Though as long as Matthews is also around I don’t got much hope

It's game 5 of round 2 of the playoffs, against the cup champs.

It's year 9.

Those plays don't work at this time of year. They never have. Makes you wonder why he hasn't learned that by now.

No worries, we just have to wait 6 months or so, then the Marner threads will again be overrun with his fans telling us how super crazy elite he is, how he's Leafs all-time this and that, he'll be on legends row, he "looks different" this year and anyone who dares to bring up playoffs will of course be called a hater.

I called this a while back. I said he would cost us a goal in the playoffs with one of his stupid backhand passes.

This was worse than usual though. A pathetic spin and backhand right to the other team and worse his pathetic defense afterwards

What in the world is he thinking here ?

Hands up if this was you. ✋

What the 4 nations showed me is Matthews and Marner bring out the worst in each other when together. I’ll be consistent in my messaging. Mark my words, we are not winning shit with Auston as the captain or leader of this team. Nick Robertson has more second round goals than Matthews let that sink in.

We got the wrong one, we needed McDavid in 2015.

That being said, moving off Mitch is probably the right move, but I doubt it solves anything. Long term. Letting Marner walk is putting a bandaid on the bigger issue, which is our 13 mill guy can’t score a big goal and that’s what he’s paid to do.

You think there will be Marner threads 6 months from now?

Oh no, he’ll he gone, it’ll be the Matthews threads or Rielly threads getting the heat next. We will move to rhe next player on the chopping block lol

Didn’t you just say the other day that Marner never mails it in, always gives 100%, now you say this? Come on

Maybe, maybe not. But even if he's gone, people will still be discussing him for years to come.

Sounds like you haven't even looked at the other threads. There are plenty of others taking heat, the idea that it's only Marner has always been absurd.

April 2026:

Seen in whatever team forum Marner signs with this off-season:
"Nice blind backhand pass, Mitch. Just cost us the game..."
"Wait, is it just me or is he crying on the bench?"
"We paid $14M for this bum?"
"Another 6 years of this? Gee, I can't wait."
