Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Part 3758391849

The biggest constraint in any Marner contract demands be it with the Leafs or on July 1 remains the Rantanen deal, whose agent is as aware as anyone what the cap is going to be next season.

And as much as we may split hairs over the underlying numbers, GMs are ultimately the ones who will set market value for guys and with that in mind it's hard to make the case that they would see Rantanen as holding relatively less value given his considerably postseason success.

Still probably 50-50 he stays in Toronto. Depending on what happens in the first round of course
You keep going until the trade route becomes available for one of these guys, you don’t walk them to UFA. Resign Mitch, if things don’t work out you find a way to move him or someone from the core. I went back and read some of the reporting. They said Marner wasn’t open to a Mid-Season Move, which leads me to believe he might have been open to being moved in the offseason. I think there’s just way too much going on during the season. Plus life will look different, I can see a few players being ready to move on if they don’t win anything in next few years

There's no indication anyone asked in the off-season though, nor that he had any interest in waiving at that time.

This is precisely why we should sign the last of our top 3 players. We're all in on the next 3-5 years. After that we're f'd for a while.

It doesn't matter how slow Marner is when he's 33.
Sounds to me Marner wants to wait and see himself and a new gm may want a different brand.

Playing devils advocate here

To the anti-Marner fans.
We get eliminated in 7 games but Marner is our best player and puts up 3 goals and 7 assists.

What's your position?
Leafs will try to sign him but he may want out or too much money. If he agreed to the Nylander contract based on the new cap, I think he wins over many of the anti-Marner fans. Sign for too much and some fans will hold him over the fire.

Kucherov wasn't a post-ELC contract. He's irrelevant. Eichel was, but he also wasn't the same caliber of player, and Buffalo had tons of room to pay extra for term. 5 years is actually the most common term for high-end post-ELC contracts, and Matthews' cap hit percentage relative to term and pre-signing performance was consistent with post-ELC history. Same with Marner. There was nothing anomalous about the contracts.
Eichel is a better player than marner so I’m not sure what your trying here

Bobby Mac and O'Dog think percentage Marner signs is 40%. Carlo 80%.

I still say he walks if the team does not have playoff success. O'Dog asks, why would you want to bring them back without playoff success? Good question for the clown who has continued to bet on these guys for 8 years.

Let's overpay all3 a second time and hope for a different results. That is some kind of Einsteining.

Leafs nation will explode if Leafs lose again and nothing is changed. Last offseason Leaf fans were out for blood and it was very bad specifically for Marner.

Yeah, they organised a failed bid to boo Marner because the games aren't played on social media.

Very nice to see him hit 100! A fun game to do so too

A pity contract stuff takes a lot of the fun out of the game sometimes.
You got a system that unintentyionally pits the fanbase against the player. Add in that its a player who wants to maximize earnings(very understandable) and you get a shitshow.

In an ideal world we all celebrate the 1st leaf winger to ever hit 100 points but we all know that aint happening.

Excellent way to cap off his best year as a leaf.
MVP of the team this season.
Aside from all the bs, he is up there with the best leafs all time (right behind Kadri lol).
Hopefully that wasn’t his last regular season game for him in a leaf jersey

Huge season. Carried the team when AM was injured, was clutch in the 4 Nations, predictably played like ass for half a dozen or so games after the tourney, then came up big down the home stretch to help secure the division title. Carry this same energy into the playoffs and this team *should* do well.
