Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Part 3758391849

Eichel is not better than Marner. If you just look at stats it’s not close. You can’t use the championship thing when comparing two players, Eichel literally forced his way out of Buffalo onto a team that went 10 million dollars over the cap to win and abused LTIR. Good on him for winning but that’s a team accomplishment. If you’re looking objectively and just the two players Marner is better and far more consistent. Eichel has started to figure it out post neck surgery though.
Earlier on in their careers it was marner ainec but to be perfectly fair jack has closed that gap to a good extent. Vegas has done a good job helping him shore up weaknesses

Mark Stone certainly does masks a few of his defensive lapses though

I know this will disappoint some but there is zero chance the team lets the top scorer on the first division winning team in 25 years walk, regardless of the playoff outcome.
This might come as a surprise to you, but if Marner wants to "walk", he doesn't need the teams permission to do so. That's because when his contract is over, he'll be an unrestricted free agent and if you don't understand what that means then welp, google is your friend. Good luck!

You’re living in a dream world if you think Marner is going to leave his hometown team, his favourite team growing up and the centre of the hockey universe to join a laughingstock like Chicago or a bottom feeder like San Jose or Anaheim or a dinkified little irrelevant town like Columbus or Calgary.

It’s going to be EIGHT (8) more years of Mitch Marner in Toronto - - sorry about your luck, my friend.

Glad that Mitch finally broke the 100 ponit ceiling.
Now, let´s get down to business. Can Mitch have a PO run where he has an impact? Can he play like a superstar in the post season?
I don´t believe he has it in him, but i do hope MM makes me eat a murder of crows.

Are we sure about this? This is their ppg side by side and running total up to that point

YearMarnerEichelRunning Total MarnerRunning Total Eichel
16-170.7920.9346157
17-180.8410.955130121
18-191.1461.065224203
19-201.1361.147291281

I'd say through the first 4 years marner was not a better player. Eichel was neck and neck with Matthews since he entered the league for the first 3 seasons. He also had way less help than marner did. His best teammate in those 4 years was reinhart who had 65 in 18-19. Marner meanwhile had an 88 point JT, 94 point AM, 88 point AM.....etc.....

I'd say it goes
16-17 to 19-20:
Eichel >>> Marner

19-20 to 2023 playoffs:
Marner >>>>> Eichel

2023 playoffs to date:
Marner >> Eichel

The statement I would make is this instead:
"Earlier on in their careers it was eichel pretty decisively. He then had a fall off in play due to the injury coupled with marner continuing to produce at his level which created a pretty big gap. Eichel has done a decent job the last two years + 2022 playoffs to close the gap a little bit but IMO marner is still the better player"

Again... Tulsky said a players linemates are biggest factor in production.

Eichel could only dream of playing on a team with linemates like Tavares, Matthews and Nylander.

What is the best linemates Eichel has had, Stone and couple years of unmotivated O'Reilly?(yes he actually admitted to being unmotivates in Buffalo).

Eichel plays the harder position, is a great passer, great shooter, produces in postseason and has great size and skating. I read that Eichel will be getting Selke consideration this year.

It isnt even close.

He says that linemates often have a have a bigger impact than quality of competition - this can be quality, chemistry and most likely both. He warns that while linemates have a significant impact, it's not a straightforward relationship. The impact of linemates can vary depending on the player's skill level and other factors. While some might consider Echiel, he is not usually listed among the top candidates NHL Selke Trophy Candidates: From The Sure Things To The Long Shots
Barkov, Reinhart, Hiecher, Drei and Marner appear on most lists.

Who’s drei?

He’s a better two way center than drai drai is just top 5 player in the world realistically top 3
Perhaps, the THN lists him and not Eichel as a candidate. I don't think THN has a monopoly on truth. I have yet to see Eichel in print though that doesn't mean that it is not nor does it mean the members PHWA share that opinion.
