Seems everyone has an appreciation thread but Marner.

Sorely missed, hurry back. Team looks out of sync when he's out of the lineup.

I wonder how the missed time will affect his chances for Olympic Participation?

Thinks this injury hurts his chances for team Canada?

Doubt it. It's hard to predict the team because you got a few locks and then it's pretty much down to how Cooper wants to have his team.

Marchand-Bergeron-Crosby is pretty much a line that's a lock

McDavid-MacKinnon are 2 others that are locks. Maybe Huberdeau plays LW on that line.

Stone-Tavares-Marner imo would be a pretty good 3rd line. 2 way players who are also deadly offensively.

4th line is where it's completely a toss up. I'll throw out this line mainly because of the Cooper connection.

Stamkos-Point-Couts/O'Rielly/Schiefele etc. Maybe a wildcard nobody expects like Wilson.

Kinda crazy that many people think Tavares shouldn't be on the team and then name Barzal, O'Rielly, Couts and Scheifele as people who should be over him.

I think McD and Mack will be split into two lines bc both of them are at their best with the puck attacking the zone.
Marchand-Sid-Bergy will be a line.
Huberdeau-Mack-Stone
Stamkos-McD-Point
The last 5 spots will be interesting, bc I do think Cooper wants ROR and Couts as a defensive shut down duo. If Kadri continues to play the way he is, hard to leave him off the team. If thats the case, ROR-Couts-Stone will be the shutdown line while Kadri will be with Mack and Huberdeau.
JT should make it b/c it provides even more C depth. Marner should also make it. Thats pretty much round out the 14 forwards.

I'm very indifferent to him. Love him in the regular season, heck he was my first pick in my pool (boo injury), but it's the playoffs that gets to me. I'll never hate him if he doesn't perform well in the playoffs, but it affects perception for many fans. He needs to elevate his game in the post season for the Leafs to win the Cup. He needs to elevate his game in the post season to show that massive contract was not an anchor for the team.

I just wish he had another gear like Kane did in the playoffs during the Chicago mini-dynasty.

he does.

I like the pick in hindsight and like him as a player a lot but absolutely hate his contract. His value at the time was 8-9 million range, because of his great season maybe bump it to a MAX 9 million but still very early to give him that contract based on his accomplishments and linemates. His contract raised the value of Rantanen... Aho signed an offersheet at 8.5 which is an indication of how his negotiations were going with Carolina and where negotiations were with other RFA's. Marner is on a 72 point pace, has not scored in 18 consecutive post season games and has not scored a powerplay goal in like a 1 1/3 of a season (if you include playoffs). The pp has looked potent without him and Matthews has produced at a better clip without him than with him. Looking at his accomplishments since his contract, his supporters can keep saying "wait and you will see" but the fact is two seasons have past and he's proven to be overpaid; we won't get the last 2 playoffs back.

Can't help but wonder what 3 million in cap space might have done for us in the past couple years. We may have won a cup. Now we have Muzzin/Tavares getting older with their abilities diminishing while our young overpaid youth learn how to win in the playoffs and learn how to be 11 million dollar players.

I too love MM as a player. But he is not what the Keafs are asking him to be. He is not Patrick Kane. He is not Stamkos, he is not the guy to get us to a cup.
Compare another player of Leaf fame, similar in stature, perhaps equal in talent, but one plays peewee hockey in the spring one did not...Dougie G.

The Leafs have absorbed the loss of Marner fairly well.

In the 4 games that Marner has missed the Leafs have scored 2 X PP goals in each game, with him being replaced by players Spezza and Kase who have found the net in his absence. Leafs PK continues on at its successful kill pace even without Marner being available at this time.
&
Auston Matthews continues his goal scoring onslaught even without his favourite wingman at his side.

In the spirit of ‘Appreciation’ you should include the teams record in those games

It wont be until 10-20 years when Leaf fans look back on Matthews and Marner and not only realize how good they were, but both of them ranking as some of the most talented and best Leafs of all time.

If Matthews stays here for majority of his career he’ll go down as the greatest Leaf of all time. Hopefully with some cups

Absolutely the PP has been much better without him on it. He is a 1 trick pony on the PP and should be kept off it when he returns……..I know this will never happen but it should

Thornton/Marleau, Roenick/Amonte, Oates/Hull, Lindros/Leclair, nobody is saying not great, but you need to win. Lots of great out there. Are you a champions?
