Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Continued

No. I never said points don't matter.
You dismissed stats that showed Marner's shortcomings saying points are only 2% of the game which is basically the same thing. Or am I wrong to assume that you understand basic English?
I said YOU only consider points and ignore the rest when evaluating players.
You say all kinds of nonsense that isn't true, and you're making yourself look silly in the process.
DEFENCE matters.
Oh look, it's captain obvious at the podium again. Thanks for sharing.:laugh:

BTW, you hero thinks the team played well last night. Do you agree?
It’s a really bad quote and no one can defend that.

People need to realize Marner is doing what probably a sports psychologist has coached him to do. Look for the positives in everything. Matthews quotes about the PP were similar, we had lots of movement but nothing fell for us, the power play has stunk up the joint all year. The leafs leg has given these guys a script on how to answer the media and it’s horrible. I don’t think Marner is brainwashing the locker room as much as the organization has already pushed these types of narratives to the players in an attempt to help them cope with the failures of the past. But it’s just so far from reality.
Nobody that's played for the Leafs in the last 50 years is even close to Marner when it comes to saying stupid things to the media, so I don't see why you would put this on the organization. So disappointing. I mean he's a moron, OK. You spend most of your life at the hockey rink so that's understandable but he's supposed to know hockey right? Some people say he's the smartest player to ever play so how is it possible that when the team plays so badly, he thinks they played well?

He's disconnected from reality, and as much as I hate to say it, it could just be that the kid's a loser, plain and simple. When there's no pressure during the regular season, he's great. Early in his career when there's no pressure on him as a new kid in the league, he played pretty well in the playoffs as well. But now, he's one of the highest paid players in the world so the pressure is on him, and as soon as the checking tightens up a few games into the playoffs, he chokes, he doesn't have the mental toughness to deal with being a disappointment so he pretends that everything's in good shape, even as the house burns down around him.

Of course I don't really know what goes on in his head so this is just my opinion, but it's not based on nothing, it's based on many years of watching him play and hearing him speak and as time goes on and his prime years are coming to an end, it looks more and more like this is what he is - a loser.
His best move last night was going to the bench during the delayed penalty so Nylander would get the minus.
The fact that some people still look at stats like +- as a reliable measure of performance boggles the mind.

So he’s so stupid that he can’t discern for himself that what he’s being “told” to say is absolutely idiotic?

Thanks for confirming.

I guess you could call what he's been doing lately 'playing'.
He does dress every night.
Nylander hasn't been good lately but what does that have to do with Marner?

Answer - you are in love with Marner so when you have nothing else to defend him with, you deflect to someone else.

If you want to bitch about Nylander, the logical thing would be to take your concern to the Nylander thread. Marner deserves some criticism from time to time, so does everyone, it's not that big a deal so deal with it.

The Marner before team posters are having a really bad day. lol. And they honestly deserve it. Hopefully this team figures it out before the playoffs for the actual fans who cheer for them. I wouldn’t hold my breath though.

Here we go again. You use 25 cherry picked games worth of points to "prove" that Nylander is more valuable than Marner. I used 209 contiguous games of offensive and defensive on ice results to "suggest" that Rantanen might need Mack to get those results and you melt down again.

This is why you will never understand why your reality differs from that of the coaches and other people that understand the game and why we were finished with all this a couple of days ago and we're finished again.

I guess after a couple of games you've flip flopped again on Marner in the regular season. No surprise.

I wouldn't either. I mean I don't really care too much about last night or the Carolina game, get it done in the playoffs and nobody will remember last night but I also don't care too much about how well he's played over the last couple of months. Overall Marner is having a great regular season, but he always plays well during the regular season. Why some people think that him playing well in November/December means that this will be the year he finally plays like a star past game 86 is beyond me.

BTW, you hero thinks the team played well last night. Do you agree?
Missed this part in your essay.

It's been a bad couple of games for him and the rest. Happens to everyone. Nothing has changed. Unlike you, the coaches know that nothing has changed (and will continue to play him in all situations.

But you keep flippin and floppin.

I looked at his entire career. You can keep lying all season long, it doesn't change the facts.

Your "results" are nonsense. You're a good example of why people who don't understand stats shouldn't use them. You can keep living in denial but the reality is that Ranta is a playoff beast, and after 86 games Marner turns into a playoff wuss.

I guess after a couple of games you've flip flopped again on Marner in the regular season. No surprise.
My position remains the same as it's been for years, Marner is a great regular season player but the fact that he is a ~70 point player in the playoffs and even worse, he goes from a ~100 player to a ~40 player after 86 games is a huge concern. If you think that's flip flopping, then go take some English lessons or something, sheesh.

If Marner plays like a star in the playoff then I will heap praise on him. FYI that's not flip flopping, it's called keeping an open mind and being objective as opposed to people like you who decide who you like and don't like, and stubbornly stick to your positions while ignoring reality.

Of course if happens to everyone but that's not the point. How does the point keep going over your head?

The point is (pay attention now) that Marner is supposed to be a smart player. A moron perhaps when it comes to everything else but a smart hockey player. How can a smart hockey player think that the team played well last night? Do you understand now?

There's nothing new in this essay either. Your compulsive need to respond to everything even when the conversation is clearly done by asking so many questions is very strange. So once again you may have the last word and I won't respond.

When you post lies and nonsense, I don't consider anything "done" and my default response is to not let it slide, but point out your lies and nonsense. I hope I didn't hurt your feelings, if it makes you feel better then know that I'm not in the habit of ignoring lies and nonsense from anyone, it's nothing personal.

Mitch is a fantastic talent. But you can't win with that attitude and him being a leadereans that type of shit permeates within the team.

Dudes gotta go or carry the team on his back in the playoffs.

If insulting him makes you feel better at night than go for it lol.

They aren’t tell him word for word what to say but likely they’ve gone through a process of trying to get him to eliminate the noise and have a positive mindset. Marner is probably interpreting that however way he is and the result is his quotes.

Some of yall are crazy. Having a bad quote is exactly that. It was a bad awful quote for him to say after their effort level. But what’s with the insults? You are #1 in terms of wanting other posters to stop using childish insults but you use them non stop. Pretty hypocritical.

The fact of the matter is we should stop guessing on what type of person Marner is, also who cares if he’s a good guy or dumb. Is he doing his part on the ice? that’s the only part I’m concerned about. The constant need to tear down players whether it’s Nylander or Marner is getting old.

Then the sports psychologist and media coach should be fire if this is what being taught.

I really can’t think of anything MM could had said that could be worse, even if he said it was a good lesson.

Is it that hard to teach them to say, ‘we didn’t play as well as the other team and need to be better in the next game.’

You are reaching a bit with your reason.

Having said all that, I really wish MM and the core don’t believe that they played well but with the history of post playoffs pressers as data, sadly they might actually do.

What was the question that prompted the quote?

The emotional responses are telling. I don't understand how people can have such a meltdown over a couple of bad games and then one quote. It's weird.

Unfortunately it’s not a couple of bad games and one quote. There are 8 years of bad games and quotes to go along with this. Marner hasn’t learned anything at all during that time or just does not care.
