Had a chance to step up with 34 and 88 out against a sad Bruins team and he shot the bed. Oh yeah, I forgot he had a high ankle sprain.

That high ankle sprain was very very bad. So bad he was playing 30mins a night with a few games to go before the playoffs.

Marner and Matthews are always afforded injuries of convenience as far as excuses go. When Willy has a migraine it's considered fake or lazy player. Maybe Willy is injured now. If Marner slowed down they would look for an awkward fall or something and say he battling injury like a champ

All we can do is hope Marner produces this postseason and beyond that. If him and the team fall flat on their faces again, it’s going to be rough.

For sure, but that hope has to go to all off these high paid bums cause not one of them has shown they can put up a big playoff. Marner just gets all the hate for no reason because there is plenty of blame to go around.

Well at least if they lock up Mitch and JT, we won't have to hear the President bullshit us in May with "everything is on the table" and "we are not here to sell jerseys".

Problem is players are not paid for effort. They are paid for results but we keep paying all 3. This organization is a joke and the proof is not one SCF appearance since 1967.
3rd and 4th liners are paid for effort, “stars” are paid to produce.

I couldn’t care less about a winger that pays more attention to defence. Goalscorers win games, you can find defensively responsible wingers for less money.

Penalty killers are only as good as their d men and goaltenders. Knies has done a great job on the PK, is he elite defensively?

Thankfully for Mitch, he stockpiled some points in that Tampa series. Those 11 career playoff goals is something special though.
Don’t forget that big TB game when we went down 5-0 and Willie finally showed up after the game was long over in the third and potted two epic goals to pad his stats. We can all play these games.

This is just silly.

Being able to match your good players against the opposition without getting caved in is generally considered a good thing in hockey.

And effort plus talent produces a lot more results than talent alone.

Just a wild take all around.

Willie has good playoff numbers but he's been pedestrian to me. At $7m, that is acceptable. Not so sure @ 11.5m. That is why my position was nothing more than $10m and that was at his peak.

I have more confidence if Matthews getting it done in a big game than Marner. BTW, two wrongs do not make a right. Sorry, I am done betting on the wrong horses unless they prove they are the right horses. Unfortunately, Shanahan already gave away the keys to the candy store.
having confidence in one player over another is why casinos win

I've seen 8 tries and it hasn't happened yet, I will excuse the first two as they were run over by much bigger and more aggressive teams. There are no excuses anymore, I saw at least one guy last year keep playing although w/o any real success while the other guy languished in the press box

You are not winning anything betting on this core. They are all me first players which it is why they are most unlikeable.

I would rather blow it up than lock in for another 4-8 years. But alas, we need to sell jerseys and sell $20 beer and wine.

there is no difference in those two statements and both however sad they are, are true.

This is why they need to look at the result of the PO before giving Marner that money. With Matthews they need to see how he treats the back or hip situation. If he does the tournament and the surgery after, that's crazy

Matty has scored a few timely playoff goals. The only big playoff goal I remember Marner scoring is the PS against Boston. The longshot from the point on Vasi was not a big goal. Marner has 11 playoff goals so it won't take long to review them.

Yeah I know that, not that I gamble.

I've been advocating to move Matthews since year number 3, what they could have gotten for him might have replaced all those goals and given the team more sandpaper on the back end, now I don't think they'd get enough for him to do it.

Why did Matthews miss those games last year?

What makes you think Marner puts more effort in than other players? Being the first man back, which is the centers job, but I digress, doesn’t mean he is trying harder.

Bergeron was an elite defensive player, but his offensive numbers from regular season to playoffs didn’t change much at all.

I don’t mean to just harp on Mitch, but it’s a Mitch thread. I just think he needs to focus more on producing offensively in the playoffs, which probably means shooting more and getting to the uncomfortable areas on the ice.

I always considered Danault's coming out party was against Matthews in the playoffs.

$5.5mm for a 50 point player, who can shutdown the opposition.

I have eyes. And the numbers back my eyes up.
