Honestly - I dont care how much he makes or how long his contract is if the Leafs win a Cup.
That's a pretty high bar given how well they done in 8 playoffs. Having said that the Eastern conference is weak and there for the taking. If they blow it again, blow up this core.

What is the obsession with Marner and Matthews playing on the same line

Someone posted already that they do not perform better statistically when together

Matthews and Domi seemed to work very well last year. Marner and Tavares seems to be a great fit.
Some want the talent spread across 3 lines since the bottom 6 is a black hole.

They perform better together in the playoffs and the team wins more with them together.

I'm all for spreading the talent since our bottom 6 is terrible and Nylander can drive a line by himself, but this is what the stats say.

It’s been discussed on multiple podcasts. Auston Matthews has made it clear to everyone in the organization that he wants to play with Marner. He’s been vocal about it and it seems like they are willing to give him Marner if he feels he plays better with Marner. I don’t think fans, management or coaches are obsessed with the idea. But 34 likes it that way.

If you’re Matthews, do you want Domi on your line or Marner this year?

So is Marner staying then if GM Matthews won’t play with anyone else.

I agree with you but after paying this guy almost $66m for the last 6 seasons and 8 playoffs, this statement is pretty sad. He now wants $13-$14m and I say no way until he proves he can do it in the playoffs. Some call that being a hater but I call it smart business.
I remember you in particular were quite critical of Marner's overly flashy style and I agreed at the time. He looked for style points and was too skillful sometimes and he has changed that a bit this season and I hope that translates in the playoffs. But it was one of the fairer critiques here when everyone was raking him over the coals. He looks like he is evolving and with his skill that excites me because he still has a ways to go. We were lucky to draft him to be honest. Hanafin or Strome would never have done well under our spotlight. Would have crippled the rebuild. No 3rd round ? Wah . No playoffs is worse lol.

Who knows? But multiple podcasts have confirmed this did happen with Matthews. I wouldn’t say he we demanding to play, more so making it know he prefers playing with Marner.

As for the contract;
I think management is going to take as much time as they can before signing that contract I don’t think they are in a rush to sign anything.

My thought process as well. I hate that we haven’t had playoff success but I could not imagine being a fan of a team like Buffalo. No playoffs in sight, botched top end picks. I rather have a chance and be in the dance than no shot at it.

Lots of things are discussed on podcasts, doesn’t make it true.

To quote a legendary poster on here….source?

I’ve posted the quotes/different YouTube clips from 22 thoughts, sdpn, kipper and Bourne, talking buds, there’s a few other small ones that referenced it. Apparently it happened over the summer. Pretty much every podcast was talking about the line combos prior to Matthews coming back. I don’t remember if it was in this thread or the old Marner thread.

Those guys are jokes.

Well, you gotta think a guy like Marner is going to get thirteen fourteen five six on the malarkey open market.

That's all you hear.

Or maybe someone gunning for Rocket Richard trophies against superstars like McDavid wants the best passer on the team and 99 point man Marner on his line and that's just what Papi wants? Why is there always some shill conspiracy theory going on with the Leafs??

He said just last week Marner "is the guy you want to play with". There's no question he's made it known he wants to play with Mitch, why are people disputing this? Just look at last week, dude was invisible and lethargic, Berube puts him back with 16 and suddenly he's euphoric and skating like the wind. It's a reciprocal relationship, they do have chemistry, but I have zero doubt 34 is forever expressing he wants to stay with Mitch.
