Agreed I think that’s really it. 12.5/12.6 will be what he takes. I don’t think Marner has any interest in leaving. People keep thinking the negotiation this time around is the same as last. But honestly to me it’s different. Ferris has been quiet as hell and that’s not his MO. I’m pretty sure the directive from Marner has been to shut up and get the deal done whenever the leafs are ready LOL

No question he is going north of Willie. Question is how far north will it take and are the Leafs willing to go there? I'd be happy to do $12.5x6 which could be sold as Marner giving the Leafs a discount. If he wants $13-$14m, I'd drag it out as long as possible and let him walk if he underwhelms again. No way can you run it back if they get dominated in round 2 or lose in round 1.
I'd bet a deal would be done if he was willing to take $12.5/12.6. That is a no brainer with the cap rising and could be sold as a discount. The issue is that he wants much more.
I also think as much as people don't want to hear it, but Lou not giving him a bonus and then giving Matthews one and Babcock being a terrible human were factors in the negotiation...
We will see I guess.

This is around the time most people start feeling good about Marner like clockwork. Then the reality check comes in April/May.
I don’t think the number is the hold up at all. I think it’s timing and optics.

It was in the last contract for sure. Don Lou was a fool for that. It's well documented and consensus is he was shortsighted and it cost us.
Now that really shouldn't have any bearing on this contract. It's time for that discount. That's if, he wants to stay and win here. If not he can make more elsewhere.

As Mirtle said last Thursday to Bunkis, if Marner was willing to take the Nylander deal, a deal would be done. Guessing Ferris is digging in waiting for the Leafs to soften/cave like they did with Willie. Mirtle also said Leafs are fine with making Marner one of the top 6 or 7 highest paid players in the league. Hence why Mirtle thinks Marner camp asking too much and I tend to agree. He also does not think a good playoff will make much difference in the final number. He thinks it will get dragged out until June which is fine with me. By then we will have seen what impact Berube had on playoff Marner.

Dom Luszczyszyn on Twitter the other day put a ceiling of 12.5 mil aav on Marner. He didn't get into details on how he came to that, but interesting to see where a primarily analytics guy situated him in terms of raw numbers
I'd say that is the floor since it is Nylander's hit on the new cap, but I think something around that is fair, there isn't a huge gap between the players like there used to be.

I am still a hard do not resign him, especially if the Leafs do not make at least the third round in the playoffs. We would have seen this movie for the last 9 years at this point and it doesn't work; the core doesn't work. There's a reason why teams don't spend over 50% of their cap on four forwards.

He played ok last night. Got 2 “points”. One on an ill advised icing, thankfully Knies got there, usually those are called. Him refusing to shoot on a breakaway is irritating. Can’t pass on those opportunities against better opponents. Considering he usually buries those, not sure why he wouldn’t shoot that.
