Unless Marner goes on an absolute tear including in the playoffs (if we make it), he needs to be traded. One of Marner or Tavares’ contract needs to be broken up into multiple good depth players. You aren’t going to accomplish anything when half your salary cap is in 4 forwards.

That was obvious before Marner was given his historic contract. Dubas needs to go for that signing.

It was obvious Marner would never live up to that contract. He needed to be bridged. Dubas failed to see the situation.

From what we've seen of Marner, and what we've learned in the past 3 years, he comes across as an arrogant, petulent, immature person. Jack Campbell on the other hand, comes across as the hockey version of Mother Theresa who sees good in all people.

Guess which one performs better in the playoffs when the games really count ?

that is his team, not him. Do a bit of research, many players have openly admitted they let their agents deal with everything and the agent just calls them for final approval. It’s well documented. I really do think if you asked Marner in a candid moment there is no where else he’d rather be. He is def overpaid but that’s on Dubas. If someone says here, have 11 million would you say no?

at the end of the day I think this year the leafs will make it past the first round and this discussion will be over with.
I highly doubt that Dubas said “have 11 million”. Logic says that Marner was asking for close to 11 million or possibly a lot more and used the threat of playing overseas. Dubas caved and offered him his current deal and Marner took it.
Marners contract is all on him and Dubas’s weakness is all on Dubas.

Actually Marner caved after it leaked that he was offered and was rejecting Tavares money in late June and the fans/media went nuts. IIRC he took one less year (6) and it got done. Imagine having to cave to a $1.5-2m overpayment. Well done by both parties.

If that is what happened then you are correct, that’s even worse on both of them.

The Fans and Media have way more sway on things like that and including decisions made higher up in the organization.

the only problem with that is that marner cant put the team on his back and is being paid as if he regularly does.

Well he admitted in the end of season availability that he wasn't strong or fast enough in the playoffs and it's two things he plans to work on for next (this) season. Marner himself acknowledged he wasn't in a state that could handle the usage expected of him (perhaps a non-hostile shot at Keefe as well? Maybe we have Marner to thank for Nylander getting first liner usage finally). The fact Marner agrees with you for that specific series pretty much contradicts that he's arrogant.

Marner said he plans to work on being able to handle "however many minutes is needed". Pretty much confirms what a lot of us have been saying about him being burned out by round 1. I'm not sure where people are drawing conclusions that he is arrogant. The "nope" is being blown out of proportion. There is a lot of miscommunication between Marner and the reporter when the question is asked. Marner accidentally says "better person" throughout the interview when he actually means "better player". The reporter used the term "better person" which I think played a role in Marner saying "nope".

Edit: I quoted the wrong guy. But game time so too lazy to fix it.

The one thing with Marner is he seems to try to be doing damage controls on his image with the leafs ever since the hold out. He has made things worse with his playoff performance and his social media attempts.

I know it’s in his head and it’s only gotten worse as time goes on. He may not admit it but if he continues to put up zeros he’s going to let it get into his head even more.

Marner is just not competing like he should. Idc if it hurts, you have to compete eveey f***ing shift in this league, spreading your legs wide isn't enough.

I hope he gets it soon otherwise its going to continue to eat at him

Neither - Jack was under 0-3 and under .900 in the 3 games that really counted to end the series with multiple weak goals at crucial times (game 6 OT goal, game 7 first goal)

LOL y’all are acting like Marner put a gun to Dubas’ head. If they didn’t want to sign marner to this deal they could have let him sit. They believed he was worth the money and they gave it to him. I will never fault any player for getting as much as they can. You only get one career

But he can be faulted for not living up to it

100% I can agree to that somewhat. I think his playoffs leave a lot to be desired. But people need to stop bitching about the extension. It’s signed and over with. If you’re a pro player, you’re trying to make as much money as you possibly can.

Absolutely. He thinks he is doing just fine and everyone in the organization is afraid to tell him different

what answer would have been acceptable? What do people want him to say? Cliche’s? I’m gonna drive the net hard and blah blah blah. Just more reading into nothing

I think a lot of people will continue bitching until he is traded…. And justifiably so
