Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Again

Listen to Cooper's full comments on Mitch .. he is bang on correct .. Mitch has trouble in fast up/down games like last night .. now at 3 on 3 things even out as he has more time and space with puck and his edgework and stickhandling can be showcased ,, i was surprised Mitch played with McJesus as they play 2 totally different non-complimentary games .. but give Mitch credit when he went on in OT with Crosby .. he was able to find a lane and Crosby figured it out

Where are all my Mitch haters this morning?
  • He hits (albeit poorly)
  • He sets up his linemates, constantly over and over, he might need better linemates to burry those flurry of chances he creates or at least linemates that are on his elite level. ;)
  • He gets 2nd star of the game
  • He back checks
  • He scores when the pressure is on
  • Everything you said he does not do, he did and more... must be frustrating to know everything you think to be true about Mitch, is proven by Mitch to be false over and over and over again by the Magic Man.
  • 8yr/$100+ mil contract coming soon....
Not a Mitch hater (or anyone else for that matter).

But do you really think he needs better linemates than McDavid and Reinhart? If so, who?

Oddly enough, neither of them was on the ice when he scored (and it wasn't 5on5).

8 years at $12.5 per wouldn't be too bad - a massive improvement over the $13 and $14 and even $15 that some people are talking about.

That's what we have been saying here as well. 3on3 he had time and space. Your comment about Crosby making it work is bang on as well, considering he is the best hockey IQ on the ICE for the entire duration of this tournament that will continue.

I don't understand why coaches keep putting 4cyl engines like Marner with a Taycan like McDavid. When he got him the puck McDavid was just gone and in there waiting for Marner to get there which included skates around the net, some stop and goes, a spin o Rama or whatever it took for Marner to get in position.

Very odd combo.

Why should Leafs fans care about Marner scoring a goal for any team other than the Leafs.

Leafs fans are fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Not necessarily a fan of team Canada at the wannabe Olympics. Furthermore being a fan of the team doesn't have to mean being a fan of the player.

It's entirely possible to distinguish the two.

There are lots of people who are fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs who aren't fans of Mitch Marner. It isn't a requirement to like the players to like the team. Some fans prefer to cheer for the crest on the front of the jersey instead of the name on the back.

It's sad Leafs fans are expected to celebrate this goal instead of any that Marner has scored for the Leafs in a big game.

Too many fans have way too much emotional attachment to this group of chronically under-performing players. If it makes them feel any better... congratulations Mitch Marner. You scored a goal that won a meaningless game in a meaningless tournament.

Now let's see you do it in the playoffs when it really matters.
I don't think there is any expectation for Leaf fans to celibate the goal. Personally I celilibrated the goal because I am supporting Canada in the tournament. I enjoyed the the Canadian goals as well.
It really isn't that interesting of a tournament imo, but it is being played and I am still watching.
Yes, the playoff criticism while valid, is just nonsense at this point the playoffs haven't started yet. I watch the games now.

Nice goal by Marner, but let’s not pretend this is some heroic feat. The guy was invisible, hard a hard time with the pace of the game. It was 3 on 3 ffs, that’s pond hockey. We can only hope it does something for his confidence going forward.
No one pretended that. Besides, he was fine in the game.

@thewave is wrong...Lol... have you read the main board gdt thread? Marner was the most hated player going into OT.

@Smif was in that thread. @Smif could you enlighten us on what fans were saying? Were people happy with Marners play?

Fact is, if you think Marner was good, then YOU are the minority.
You have to discount the main boards by at least 50% if it's a Leafs player.

I wouldn't say he was particularly good, but he wasn't bad, and he did score the winner.

Line was a bit out of sync for parts of their first game together, but Marner was good 5v5 and 4v5 too. Led all forwards on both teams in on-ice xGF% at 5v5, for the record. There's more to hockey than skating fast, looking flashy, and accomplishing nothing.

Ironically, you following me around into every thread to make remarks like these for your ridiculous shtick is more bot-like than anything I've ever done or said.
He was second in ice time 20 seconds less than McDavid, but yeah, he was OK in the game.

When Cooper was asked about Mitch's goal.

" ...a big time player, making a big time play, at a big time moment... that is why guys like him are on this team, he was fabulous...."

... not as catchy as "Magic" Mitch but "BIG TIME" Mitch has a ring to it ...

LOL no, 57 goals last year/ great defensive forward and a generational center on his wing kinda says it all for themselves but it sure is fun to F with Mitch haters....

Who are you going to believe his coach (what else is going to say) or posters on the board?

Watching that goal again at Leaside Pub on pasta night as I pound back $7 Creemore pints, I have to say that's a high IQ shot by Mitch.

The way he pulls the puck to his right, makes the goalie think that he might try to go around the D man but then he slings the shot back against the grain.

Goalie was clearly not expecting the shot there.

Love him or hate him, you cannot deny the skill on that play.

Now you're citing XGF as a credible stat? You dismissed it as laughable when it was used against him before.

Let me know and I'll post his past terrible xgf stats again and get you to comment.
