Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Again

He has top tier offensive and defensive talent. It's ok for us to say he's capable for being better. In my eye he's roughly 80% of what he's very capable of doing. Doesn't make us a hater for asking for more. Especially at the salary he will likely request.

He definitely could have been better during 5on5 in the 4 nations game. But it's a bunch of various players coming together to form a new team and gain chemistry so meh. I'm cheering more for canada than looking at criticizing his play.

He was solid. At 3 on 3. Watch the game over it was bad

Bad as in when he set up Reinhart for a tap in and Rein's didn't score, or when he set up McDavid multiple times for easy goals and #97 didn't score and that was just the 1st period play. Agreed Marner's linemates were bad, they didn't bring the same focus and skill that Mitch "2nd Star" Marner brought. If Marner's linemates had of just tapped in the easy chances that Mitch gave them, Mitch would have had what, a goal and 3 assists?

His biggest moment since being a Leaf (almost 10 years) is a 3 on 3 OT winner in a nothing NHL sponsored all-star tournament.

You seem like you have a HODL mentality regarding the Leafs. If or when it fails will you still support the organization? How many years is acceptable for a core to have success?

We know you are OK with 8 years.

10yrs?
12 yrs?
14yrs?
16yrs?

Which of the following best represents your level of patience?
You’re not going to be able to have a rational convo with blind homers.

Like everything Mitch, it takes on a life of it's own. He'll probably get better as the tourney goes on, it's an odd choice to put him next to McD, Crosby would seem like a better match. Let's also not forget that he and Auston have been on Horacek break the last few weeks or so, they'll need a game or two to ramp up.

People see what they want to see sometimes and double down on bad takes more than ever. It's the opposite for a guy like Crosby where it looked like to me he was drop passing back to Toews off the bench on the winning goal and missed him. It still had the same effect of backing up the D to create space for Marner following up the play but some folks are acting like that created the whole play. Not much is said of Marners great D lifting Bratts stick and taking him out in the Dzone to get the puck to Crosby either but most people dont see D out there.

Cooper absolutely glowing about Marner's game afterwords and looking a little frustrated with stupid media questions about him.

I thought the McDavid line looked great in the first period (McDavid really should have finished on that short pass from Marner to leave him all alone and Reinhart had some great looks as well) but were a bit out of sorts from the mid 2nd to early 3rd and then came on strong again. Would have had the game winner in the 3rd if not for the save of the game.

Overall, Marner had a great game.

Cooper thought so too.

Hope he continues to play well.

Maybe he can convince a Kucherov for Marner trade if he loves him so much.

Marner delivered an impressive performance in yesterday's match against Sweden. Despite being part of such a talented roster, he distinguished himself notably. His success is encouraging, and like Matthews and Nylander, he deserves support in his development and quest to be a part of a championship team. The experience of competing alongside the world's elite players should only benefit his game, and I look forward to him bringing the lessons over to the Leafs.

Canada with Marner on the ice at even strength for the game:

Scoring chances: 13-4
High Danger chances: 6-2
Refresh me who was also on that line please. It doesn't work like because Marner is on the ice this is why these stats are what they are.

It was 10 seasons for Ovie..so ya never know.

He’s a great player but that was a noticeably poor game for him until the sweet goal. He can be better than that by far and doesn’t need his tires pumped for a pretty mediocre game.

Maybe playing on this tournament will help Marner.

Mcdavid mentioned after the 1st practice that Marner plays high in the zone.

In the game, Marner rarely was high in the zone and was deep in the zone.

Marner after the game was asked about playing with Mcdavid and he said they've had alot of discussions about where they want eachother to be on the ice.

Pretty clear that McDavid quickly let Marner know that he doesn't like Marner playing high in the zone.

Interesting that Mcdavid seemed to get through to Marner quickly, yet Marner seemingly has ignored Berube.

Hopefully its an eye opener for Marner and he comes back to Toronto and ditches the high zone bull#$&^.

Ok so you are a fan that just sort of goes along rara go Leafs go win or lose it's not important. That's fine, some people are like that. I want a cup and they are not getting that done or getting closer to it.

Fine to want change, what is YOUR plan?

Do you honestly think that Berube is telling Mitch to play somewhere he is not playing? Besides saying your colorful imaganation, where did you get this?

Well not overpay Marner. I didn't like overpaying Nylander either. If we do pay Marner give us an out by restricting the NMC. If that does not work see if Marner for Crosby works for Kyle and Sid. Not likely but who knows. Oh and don't pay JT 7m.

It's not really a difficult plan. There are a few options in it but mostly preserving cap. The Longshot part.

Let Marner and JT go. Attempt for McDavid after next season.

Ovie is more like Matthews and Marner like Semin though. They got rid of Semin and then won.

Semin was never a core player or as valued to Wash as Mitch is to Toronto. Semin was a pain in the ass offence only player.

What is an over pay?

Nylander is overpaid at 11.5m should be 9.5m-10m. I dislike his contract but trust he means he wants to be here when we win and love Toronto.

Marner probably should have a wage freeze at 11m but I would go up to about 12m if he gives us a Limited trade clause, even if it's NMC for the first couple years.

I would attempt to see if we could get Sid for Mitch though first. If he says no then you probably have to wait until after the playoffs. If he doesn't have a good one, its time for a change regardless
