Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Again

So if we take away the good and only leave the bad, Marner is a bad player? That is some MIT logic right tehre? If you use the take away the good but leave the bad for MacKinnon and McDavid how do they look?

Enjoy. Maybe AI can read them all for you and summarize

Oh, look at that. Mitch "can't-play-in-big-moments" Marner scoring the OT GWG with his "muffin shot" in an international best on best game.

Why didn't he get player of the game? He scored a GOAL, which we all know is the only type of valuable point. And he scored it later in the game so we all know it's worth double because reasons! Silly Crosby only got primary assists, and this place taught me that primary assists are worthless and dont contribute to goals at all... Hmm.

Of course, we can't forget the real player of the game. Mr. clutch himself. Mr. playoff god. It sure was awesome seeing Mackinnon try to repeatedly one man show rushes into numbers and lose the puck in a possession-focused OT game state. That's what a real winner does.

No I read about. Go check out some Ex GM books

Dude you are so far off the reservation, I'm not even sure what you are brattling on about.

First it was Cooper is angling for a job, then its going on about bad mouthing players in public, like WTF?

I've read all kinds of books by former players and executives, you do get those books are typically written from a singular perspective and not the gods gospel right?

You need 3 data points to establish a trend. 1 or 2 years is a pointless comparison.
I was just correcting your inaccurate statement (which was also only two years) and adding a little context.

If you want a trend:
Tampa - 2G 9A in 6 games 1.83ppg
Florida - 1G 2A in 5 games 0.6 ppg
Boston - 1G 2A in 7 games 0.43 ppg

3 data points - notice a trend?

At a 5v5 Swe had him locked down shut down. Ineffective until 3v3. The only players that could do what they wanted out there were 87 29 97.

Those were the standout forwards. They looked like they belong in a tier up comparatively. That is why they deserve the 13m type contracts and Marner does not. Like would you pay 13m for Stone? It's stupid

Indeed it is.
I understood the skepticism heading into the copyright trademark 4 Nations Faceoff but to maintain the tournament is a joke line after a show like that. it's sad man!

the Marchand line was great too, idk what you watched

But again. Not a 12m 13m player. There is such a large gap in play between them. That is what this is about.

I would trade Mitch 1 for 1 for Sid today and we may go deep in the playoffs for it. Hopefully he would stick around a couple years after.

Line was a bit out of sync for parts of their first game together, but Marner was good 5v5 and 4v5 too. Led all forwards on both teams in on-ice xGF% at 5v5, for the record. There's more to hockey than skating fast, looking flashy, and accomplishing nothing.

Ironically, you following me around into every thread to make remarks like these for your ridiculous shtick is more bot-like than anything I've ever done or said.

Mitch wasn't a factor until he was.

And that's what you hope for. If a star player doesn't dominate over 60 minutes at least rise up for that one moment to make a difference. Mitch did exactly that.

I can hate on him & other Leafs' stars all day for not delivering in the blue & white, but I had absolutely no problem being happy he scored the winner and getting the praise he deserved.

(I had no problem celebrating when Marchand scored either, so take that for what it's worth)

MM can be a Tkachuk, Eichel, Phil. But you can’t state he is Kawhi bc when Kawhi was traded to the Raptors, he already performed in the playoffs, won Championships and was Finals MVP.

By looking at recent trade, it does seem like that the team with the better player end up winnining the Cup but think that’s also due to that team being close and actually found the right piece. Personally, I think Flames won that trade with Panthers by a bit bc Huber was a 100pts player, Weegar a top pairing RD and a 1st rounder. But Panthers won the Cup.

If MM is traded it will be a Rantanen type as I don’t think any teams will trade a 100pts winger, a top pairing Dman and their 1st for MM.

As for MM walking, I believe he is walking too and that’s the smart thing for him to do bc so far he has shown that he can’t be an alpha on the team but he could be a great Beta. And that’s nothing wrong with that, Pippen was one of the best players in the league while being the Beta to MJ’s alpha. If I am MM, I will go to a team that got true alphas and just play the supporting role and get paid like a superstar like Eichel in Vegas.
Then he should be paid as a beta too.

Where are all my Mitch haters this morning?
  • He hits (albeit poorly)
  • He sets up his linemates, constantly over and over, he might need better linemates to burry those flurry of chances he creates or at least linemates that are on his elite level. ;)
  • He gets 2nd star of the game
  • He back checks
  • He scores when the pressure is on
  • Everything you said he does not do, he did and more... must be frustrating to know everything you think to be true about Mitch, is proven by Mitch to be false over and over and over again by the Magic Man.
  • 8yr/$100+ mil contract coming soon....

Mitch excels at 3 on 3 because there is so much time and space available to him. Unfortunately playoff hockey especially later in series is the opposite and that’s when he struggles.

Agreed. The fans picked on him merciless. I bet he walks for free for the abuse he took even though he was our playoff leader in points. Marner is uneducated and does not do well with a camera in his face. I bet he is just counting the days until he can go somewhere where he is appreciated.
Life will go on for the Leafs if Marner leaves. No one player is the cause of team success or failure. Sometimes a combination of players just doesn’t develop into a great team. In contrast to that, some teams are better than the sum of their parts. That’s a real team. Not a group of players who take most of the money and then a ragtag interchangeable group who add little value.

This is ridiculous. Are you taking 30 second segments of the game stitching it together and forming a narrative?

It's creative

Maybe it's that I'm old school, but 3on3 OT is a game so far removed from 5on5 hockey that I simply can't take it seriously. It was fun to watch, don't get me wrong, but fun is all it is. Jokes can be fun, that's kind of the point actually. :)

Bring it on. 8y/$108-$110m is what I am against.

As much as I like your enthusiasm; a make believe tourney doesn’t inflate his contract. What he does in the playoffs for the team that currently employs him will (or not).

He can only be replaced with an Elite playmaker and an elite power play killer

Fortunately for him there’s no one else in The NHL that is great at both as he is
Actually the point is they don’t need to replace him with a superstar playmaker. That combination hasn’t worked in eight tries. They should use the $14M Marner will want and the $8M Tavares is asking for differently for 3 high end players who give the team more depth scoring and/or scoring from the back end. Redistribute their payroll to build a complete team that isn’t just dependent on four players to score because when they’re shut down, they can’t win.

Hate is a strong word. He's in a Leaf jersey so he will be supported. I am a non believer.

He is a great PK guy.. he's very good defensively in the spaces, NZ, d zone coverage. He's a gem during 3 on 3. Is that enough for 100 mill? Probably is here in Toronto. The proof will be in the playoff pudding.

I think we were all happy to see him score that big goal... can only help.

If you're having trouble finding them, maybe it's because they either don't exist, or that there are so few of them that they're hard to find.

I've never hated anyone that plays for the Leafs myself, the only thing I hate is how Marner disappears after 86 games. Instead of crowing about his greatness in February, why not get back to us when Mitch plays consistently like a super star after 86 games because until that happens, he's still the same overpaid regular season wonderboy who plays turns into a wuss when the going gets tough.

Very well put! I support Mitch the same way I support all our players, but I'm a non believer (who hopes to believe again one day though I doubt it's going to happen).

I was for sure happy to see him score that goal. The tournament to me is meaningless fluff but still, it was a nice goal. The first thought that went through my mind was boy would I ever love to see him do that in a big playoff game for us!

So far the playoff pudding has been inedible. That is all.

Yes essentially, most shifts are 30 seconds long, take 25 or so of those 30 to 45 second segments and build a narrative for the game ... that is how it is done.

CHEF'S KISS - SECOND STAR!!!!!
