Player Discussion Mitch Marner, Again

Yeah Marner didn't have a good game until that point, but the end is all that matters. Happy he got the winner and hope he can contribute more.

I should probably join you and change my policy on ignoring people, some are just straight up anti-fans, even during the best moments. They ruin it.
I resisted for a while, and my list is very small, but it isn't rational debate, it's just some pathology to be frank. I'm a big free speech guy, but I also don't listen to every idiot in the real world so why do I have to with social media? Waste of time. I'm just glad a Leaf made an impact on the big stage, that shot was incredible.

There is no denying he is a highly skilled player, but for me the question becomes, can you win with your 3rd best player making $13+m? After 8 years of the same stale rerun, IMO no. If one of Marner or Willie was a top 1/2C or a Makar, maybe it has a better chance of working. Two soft wingers @ $25m is overkill.

Sometimes too much of a good thing is not a good thing.
Yeah I've got no idea why Treliving not only paid him that much but also gave him the C.

There would be no assist without the goal.
And no goal w/o the assist

Now what?

I just can't figure out how he could be so good when I'm told by the brain trust in here how bad he is. It's almost like they some people might be wrong...
..wait...you were posting on the main board GDT while the majority of Team Canada fans/posters were $%tting on Marner? But are on this board acting like he was incredible and your shocked by the negativity?

Lol

I corrected my post, McDavid played 20 more seconds. But, yes, had him out in all situations, he loves Mitch.
Yeah, how would Cooper know who is playing well? I wonder if we can get a break down of the goal. Where Marner receives a perfect drop pass from Crosby then watch Marner flub the puck trying to skate around guys and the muffin shot that randomly goes in the net. Besides, I am not giving credit to the guy who flubbed the puck in the net. Assists are worth more than goals.

Well, Marner got the goal, so we diminish its value.

Post game - Carter thought Mcdavid didn't have a great game.

Biz said Marner didn't play that well despite the goal.

But yea... don't listen to the panel of former NHL players lol.
You could just watch his ice-time and see how much his current coach values him. Former players are knowledgeable no doubt - but a current coach trying to win the tournament, would be more credible.

I don't love the fit with Marner & McDavid. I like Marner with guys like Point, Stone, Tavares and even Crosby. Guys not reliant on speed like McDavid. Tbh, like I said before, McDavid is a unicorn and I honestly don't know who he would be best with. Marner is a beauty but not sure he's best utilised with McDavid for Team Canada. With that being said, Cooper LOVES Marner and I trust his judgement more than possibly any other coach out there. If he's going to be with McDavid he'll need more than one game to adapt to the player he is. He will get there though.

It was like his only shot on net. He was non existent. SWE isn't even a serious team and he sucked balls 5v5. I agree
3-on-3 isn’t enjoyable...its shinny not hockey and there isnt 3v3 in the playoffs. Its a season gimmic. What’s everyone so impressed with? That Marner had the awareness to skate full speed into wide-open ice, in a straight line, and take a shot? That makes up for his dreadful 5v5 performance in regulation?

Just check the main boards GDT, by the end of regulation, most had turned on Marner and noticed what many of us have been saying on this board for years. Shocked how invisible, ineffective and how he cant get even generate a shot on net. There wasn’t a player more disliked in that game thread. Read the comments. I know many of his upporters here have, because they were in that thread defending him.

Watching the game today just strengthened my opinion of him. He looked even worse than I was expecting in comparison to Mackinnon, Mcdavid and Crosby.

The hate for Marner on this forum is sad. Who can play with McDavid? He is so far beyond every other player it’s difficult to keep up with him. I agree Marner would be better utilized as the set up guy for shooters like Stone or Reinhardt but trashing a guy who is effective defensively and scored the winning goal is hard to understand. If you are better at your job then go ahead and criticize but otherwise it’s just hockey (which is an escape from everyday life) and not the most important thing in the world. Can we just not all cheer for Canada in this difficult time in our history and appreciate the effort the players are putting in (for free)

I'm not much of a Marner supporter, but I thought his game was decent from start to finish.

The goal was obviously sweet, but he made a lot of nice plays to get pucks back and pressure other players throughout the game too. Most of the focus will always go to the offensive side where he had some nice plays and then some shifts that fell flat.

Rather than being soft/clueless (like he's been with the Leafs in big games) it seemed more of a chemistry issue at certain points. He was slightly out of sync alongside Reinhart and McDavid. Overall, not too bad from him though.

My hope is he builds some positivity from this tournament (especially if they win) and carries it into the playoffs.

Let's see what happens.
