Tavares needs one to be productive at this stage. The other should drive his own line for the money he gets.

I think they would play great together. But i understand it will never happen.

I realy dont care what Tavares need. Put him on the first line then. Or Maby Marner and Nylander together with Tavares works. We have tried Nylander on third line before. Not good. And Marner will never go below second line.

I'm not sure if there's a direct quote of him saying that or if it's just purely speculation, or was said in passing. Only thing he said is he wants to stay in Toronto. I think with everything it should be taken with a grain of salt.

I was all in for signing Tavares. I just did not consider the consequences when it came to negotiations with the 3 amigos. I never understood signing Marleau. That was Lou's dumbest move.

Don't know why a UFA would drive RFA negotiations.

Seems to me the GM (or his bosses) screwed up.

I think I'd take the younger combination, although I still think marner can feed pucks to any shooter, and not sure Bennett is anything more than a #3 center.

Marleau, geez, someone should write a book about how this whole thing failed, just a long series of bad moves. Obviously, spending that 4th large contract on a stud dman would have been the correct thing to do, and we did have Kadri to pencil in at 2C.

I would love to read a book about the whole thought process during all of Kyle's reign. Every move they made, I want to know why.

Nah Marner will want it both ways. He’ll want the security of an 8 year deal, and he’ll want the the 110M+ factored into his salary, not to mention the full NMC. Only thing I wonder if he’d be willing to defer some of the money, which his camp would play out as him making concessions to make the team more competitive lmao.

Yeah worth noting, if he kept his current cap percentage, it would be about 12.7 m on next years salary cap. His camp will say that’s not much of a raise, but I see this as a unique opportunity for Marner to undue some of the damage from his last contract, and still get almost 1.8 million raise. He wouldn’t look nearly as greedy if he kept his cap percentage where it is. He was overpaid on his last contract by 2m per, so another 1.8 on top of 10.9 is nothing for him to scoff at. From an optics point of view, he would slot in somewhat appropriately between Matthews and Nylander. If he wants to be paid more than Matthews, it’s going just escalate Matthews next cap hit.

Mirtle said Leafs are willing to make him one of the top 6 or 7th highest paid players in the league. Looks like he wants to be in the top 2 or 3. Now that is the kind of team player I want to build around.

Seriously how does a guy like Benoit making peanuts play as hard/tough as he does every shift when he sees this guy making 10x the money and is afraid of contact and stays as far from the blue paint as possible?
