So what should they do?

If Marner's camp is asking for a number higher than Matthews then we should tell his camp to f*** off and start planning for a future without Marner. Matthews and Marner aren't on the same tier as players, simple as that.

Some think he could leave if he is not locked up.

Some people believe he might have already been traded last summer if not for his full NMC. That no trade clause guaranteeing he remain a Leaf unless he gave consent to allow them to move on.

When Marner was an RFA he threatened Leafs management with an Offersheet forcing Leafs management to overpay him to keep him. But he never officially signed it, an indication he never intended to leave only exploit that to his financial gain.

If he once again hopes to remain a Leaf then he is not being forced to sign with another team this time around either as a UFA, and instead should plan on having the playoff of his career and once again force Leafs management hand to meet his demands based on the merits of his contribution.

Point being Marner controls his future and at present NOBODY is forcing him to leave the organization and he controls that even when this contract ends.. However there is one thing perhaps preventing him from being life long Leaf and that really depends on his playoff performance and IF he accepts a contract from Toronto should that be offered, but on their terms. That offer can increase with a successful playoff season for the Leafs, that might not be available today until he PROVES it.

If its really only about the MONEY and Marner chooses to leave to chase top $$ then he was really only using the Leafs as a bargaining tool all along for his personal gain. Loyalty is a 2-way street and Marner is currently in the drivers seat.

What is the value to signing him before the post season finishes?

If he has a good post season, he will not have earned more than he's already asking for. And if another team backs up the truck for him, and he wants to accept that over a very, very reasonable (most likely overly reasonable) offer from us...then he doesn't really want to be here and we use that open 11-13 million to spread around multiple holes.

If he has a very poor post season then we can much better assess what we really want to do.

I just don't see any value to signing him prior to the post season. None.

This post above is getting lots of likes. I'd like to see some people build a good case against it for my own curiosity.

Matthews continues to carry the offense for his line. No empty calorie points on Matthews goal for Marner today though.

Ranta might if Sakic sticks to his internal pay scale. Doubt Marner does because Leafs will pay.

Not much they can do except let leafs management hear it. They do but don't seem to care because they are smarter. A good example was their decision to extend Dubas.
