Love him or hate him Marner sure generates a lot of emotion.
My official stance at this point is about the playoffs. Not just if he has a great stats line but what this stats mean. Not all goals are created equal and not all assist are created equal.
Second to that is team success
. If they flame out first round again changes will be required and as long as they haven’t signed him yet he will be one of those changes along with Tavares

They know that marner Tavares Willy and matthews ALL of them have disappointed in the playoffs
Even if they lose in the first round they will still sign marner
They are a worse team without him and don’t give me the we can replace him with a 7 and 6 million dollar replacement
They will never ever lose a player like marner for nothing allowing him to UFA

Maybe Shanahan was playing the long game all along. Wait till everyone else sucks and hope it works out one of these years. I’m actually suprised they haven’t re-signed him yet, not sure who doesn’t want to commit

I expect them to announce a new contract no later than the end of March. It will be done before the playoffs start.

I suspect the agent is waiting out the league to formally announce the next cap, or at least give a firmer confirmation of just how high the raise will be. , Gives them the ability to up the AAV based on cap hit %

Or to put it another way, Marner has instructed his agent to squeeze the team for every penny he possibly can. Up that AAV baby, up it as high as you can.

I like to believe that he is just getting horrible advice from his agent. Now that Matthews and Nylander have signed he has the chance to take less than he could and change the way some view him. Or better yet, he can lead the Leafs to the Cup and no one will care what his AAV is

I'm guessing agents always give the same general advice which is get as much money as you can. Then it's up to Marner to either take that advice, or not.

If there has been an offer from the Leafs, then I'm sure it's been presented to Marner and the agent probably said it's up to you, you can sign now, or hold out for a while in which case you'll probably end up getting more. So Marner is of course free to hold out but if that's his choice, then he best not whine later on when some fans don't like it. IIRC, there was some whining on his part last time around when some fans let know how they felt when they saw him in public so he knows perfectly well that he can't have it both ways.

I’m going to hold off on any judgement until the dust settles here. Other than the Marner camp and Leafs management, nobody can make a claim right now that they know what’s actually being bandied about in terms of real financial numbers. The “I’m hearing [insert number]” has always been code speak for — click on my site.

I will say though that if he were to sign for 12.5 or less, he would really be doing us a solid.

On a personal note - it’s crazy that we live in a world where someone could reject an offer of 100 million over eight years? You know you’re getting old when you actually remember a time when hockey players weren’t all that well off. My first Leafs game, I sat in the greys and paid a whopping $4.00 for a ticket; ice level seats (golds) were $12.00.

Agree 100. People are always saying this and that, it's almost impossible to determine what's true and what isn't so best not to pay much attention to it. Whatever happens, happens and whatever it is, I'm not holding out much hope that it will be Marner doing us a solid.

I don't remember what tickets cost when I was a kid (my dad bought them for me) but I do remember when Bobby Hull was the first hockey player to get a million dollar contract. That was over 50 years ago, the contract was for more than a million actually and it was spread over many years but in any case, it was HUGE news at the time, pretty much surreal. The reason it was so big was that the contract was with the WHA so he had to leave the NHL and this was the deal that put the WHA on the map.

A side effect was that he couldn't play for Team Canada against the Russkies in 1972 as they only allowed NHL players on the team. Team Canada also had to make do without the injured Bobby Orr but I digress.

So if they are a worse team with out him and will have had 9 years of playoff failures with the core intact what is the plan……..just wait until these guys age out and start again

It’s simple Mitch, if you have a great playoff - you can have something higher than Willy and less then Auston for 6-8 years.

If you don’t like it, gtfo.

We can get great wingers or another D man with your cap $$$.
We could get both with cap increase.

I think they should fix this so they’re setting the cap a year out. Next season’s cap should be set before the current season begins or at the latest by Jan 1st. Teams not being able budget for the next year at the TDL is kind of dumb.

Anyway, he's having a great season to date.
For some reason there are those that hate to see it.

I'm done my last call for the day, going for a pint. Cheers.
LOL. Can you show me even one post showing hate for Marner having a great season? When you realize you can't find even one, perhaps you can stop polluting the Marner threads with this crap.
I agree the holdup is the final confirmation of the cap number, then it gets done.

Recently it’s been during the SCF - giving teams 3 weeks to budget.
I sure hope you guys are right as that would mean Marner won't be signed until after the playoffs.
That gives me at least some hope that we'll think twice about bending over for the kid again if he flames out in the playoffs again.

I don't believe they will wait that long to sign him.
But you just said that it's "obvious" that they're waiting for the cap number. Changed your mind already about what's "obvious" and what isn't?
