Well Marner 's play this season has been far better than Nylander ( same as Matthews has been far better then Tavares) Consequently Marner can be more easily forgiven for the occasional bad play or game.
That's true and fair, but at this point the viciousness, automacy and frenquency of the criticism has gotten out of hand. Critcism is fair but it goes overboard when there is a mob mentality behind it. It's easier (and more comforting) to be able to pick a whipping boy rather than nitpick at a whole team.

Matthews is the best player on the Leafs. Marner is 2nd.

thats debatable at best. Marner is the best Leaf and its been that way for a while. Sometimes i think that Leafs fans believe that if they side with a player other than Matthews it will make him less the prolific goal scorer that he is, when it doesnt. Either way, lets agree to disagree.

We know what it's like when Matty misses games, they barely skip a beat.

I can't recall if Marner has ever missed consecutive games before. It'd be interesting to see what impact Mitch when he's missed from the lineup (of course I would never want to see that happen).

So the answer to our playoff problems is to sit Matty ? Seriously Mitch was out last year with a high ankle sprain and mono?? in year 1 IIRC.

Geepers Mister that's great, was that from the game last night? The reason I ask is because we must've all blinked, gone to the can, went to get a snack, was pouring a refreshing beverage or something because not a single peep was heard from the lea of Flanders nor the Nation of Leaf

you should be commended for bringing this to our collective attentions, thank you! thank so much from all of the bottoms of our collective blue hearts

in future we shall endeavour to be ever more vigilant in our observation of the stuffs on the ice(why I say stuffs, is because there is a lot of it) that turns into horsepuckey

Small sample size. Wasn't Mitch injured during the Babcock mutiny?

I'll take Mitch over Willie, but this team is not going anywhere without it's big goal sccoring franchise C.
How big a sample do you need exactly ? Mathews missed 20 games year 2 and 14 games year 3 , he also missed some last season and this so in 3 full seasons and 2 partial he has missed 40 games so far , thats a pretty fair sample size in my book .

Sample size proving that....he has played in 90% of his team's games in his career so far.

So you think the sample size is large enough to conclude Leafs do better with Matthews out of the lineup ? Does it not then follow we should sit him out in the playoffs ?

last game was no good for Mitch. Bad on the back check. Two really bad turnovers that cost the Leafs huge.

No he missed regular season games so the conclusion would be to sit him more during the regular season . There isn't any data on missed playoff games for you to make that sideways leap but nice spin eh .

If sitting him for a few games here or there sure they can get by, but I am thinking if he gets hurt for a long stretch, no way they win as many games. The Raps had a winning record in games Leonard was rested but no way they win as many games with him out of the lineup for long stretches.

Marner on pace to destroy his previous goal totals

Crazy because his shot still looks like a muffin shot to me. Doesn't matter how they go in though. If Mitch can be a 25-30 goal guy given his other playmaking skills I can definitely see him flirting with a couple 100 point seasons throughout his career.

Quickness, shot and strength are areas he is still developing. Actually not quick enough development on either with his strength being furthest along.
Tip of the iceberg we are seeing with Marner. Yes he can play now. There is another level that is still in development. He should get to 185-190 pounds eventually. Quickness+strength=shot later.
I see weaknesses in his game all the time. He’s a top scorer now. He will be a top player in due course. You just can’t grow strength and it’s still needs progress.

Marner has more point and a higher ppg over the last 3 years.

There have been lots of players who have had their best season next to mitch. The same can not be said for matthews.

Having a player who can bring out the best in their linemates creates more trade value which is a huge positive.

Many on the main boards even say marner is just as good or better.

It is very close between the two but matthews being a center and a goal scorer do not automatically make him the better player. Just look at st.louis vs lecavalier. I'd take st.louis 10/10.
