Missing Posters

I have not been around as much as of late. I've been working in a school where the wifi blocks me from posting on certain sites, but I do still read here during the day and try to be active in as many GDTs as possible.

I do feel like there's a different type of negativity here as of late and it has to do with expectations versus performance. Many of us who have been here for quite a while have seen some pretty lean times such as the failed post lockout strategy and the Dave Lewis experiment.

The difference is that the expectations were so high coming into this season and the team hasn't performed. It sucks and nobody likes to see it happen. Many are at each other's throats over the situation and the conversation quickly devolves.

Some have pointed out the existance to twitter and I feel like that has an impact on a place like this. Whereas even a few years ago, this was the place to come for your hockey news, there are more instantaneous forms of media where you can get the facts. Hence, we have less discussion threads.

I also feel like the frustration with the team has divided a lot of us into two camps; the glass half empty and the glass half full crews. In reality, there is truth in both arguments, but we get into labeling and name calling and it makes people want to stay away.

We as mods do the best we can to enforce the site rules without squashing discussion, but the rules are the rules. It boils down to being respectful of each other and aknowledging that there will be dissenting opinions. It happens in all walks of life. We live in an age though where people often resort to mudslinging and/or dismissing rather than taking the time to think about the opposing viewpoint.

I think this can be debated. Agreed that there are always folks on either side of a position, but I think it was pretty well split on whether this was going to be a competitive team this season or not. I think one possible difference this season is -- like today's politics -- the extremes on the two sides were, well, very extreme. Expectations for those who thought the team was going to be a cup competitor were extremely high. Those who didn't wanted to trade away all of the talent. The posters holding positions on the two extremes were derided by the other side as fools and idiots.

There was very little moderation, and I don't mean moderation by the mods. I mean moderation as in middle-of-the-road, very little respect, and very little tolerance for others opinions. That, to me, is one very real reason why so many have moved on or gone silent while lurking.

Good post. :yo:

I find it interesting that the creation of this thread has shown me that all the threads now have the common theme of just negativity and crapping on everything that they could be merged into one. The only ones I care to check into is this one, the NFL thread and of course the media thread.

Doji and LucicTrain gave me moderator PTSD. Probably good guys though.

Dojii died as a result of the Dennis F. Wideman debate, wherein he endlessly defended the turnover machine. I think he might have actually been Dennis F. Wideman.

...hiya.

I lurk here, still. Probably once a week. Same with some other place I can't directly mention. I'm still somewhat active on the politics board.

Between work, family stuff (including a brother that's had cancer twice in the last couple years), and the team being incredibly average this year, I'm just not feeling it. I don't have the desire to argue about a team that I don't find entertaining to watch, or to do a deep dive into the financial side of it. I'd much rather just chill.

I follow Dom and Kirk on Twitter. Between them, I get just about all the hockey news I want/need.

Beyond that, I hope everyone's doing well.

Thanks. Not sure what kind of hockey info I give out on twitter with tweets like these:

Dominic Tiano ‏@dominictiano 10m10 minutes ago
If you ask me, I think Malcolm Subban's showcase to the Oiler's was impressive. He looked very handsome at the end of the bench #Bruins

In all seriousness though, I'll add your brother into a prayer today. I'm hoping for the best.

HEY, why wasn't I invited to the wedding?

In a weird twist, suddenly a ton of long time missing posters have shown up randomly and posted. Not sure if this will work, but I once lost a big pile of money and I'm completely missing it now...:naughty:

Just found a big pile of money! Don't know why someone would misplace this but their loss.

It's all $2 bills though, weird...

Agreed; I've seen several names in the past week that i haven't seen in quite awhile. and this place isn't a lot different to me then what it was 10+ years ago; there is way more background noise and overreactions; but there was some of that back then too. That said, it is nice to see many of the old familiar 'faces', some of whom I have always enjoyed reading.

hope you find your pile of money!!

Its not so much posters with a different opinion, rather posters that have taken a stand. And The Stand is repeated ad nauseam no matter what happens on the ice. Biggest flashpoints being Claude, Chia, The System, softness, 4th line, Bart, Seguin & Boychuk.
